Let’s fix your dog’s bad breath! 👅
We have the solution to “DOG BREATH”, in a yummy vanilla flavored chew that fights bad breath. Oravet chews prevent the formation of tartar and plaque that cause bad breath, by using a veterinary prescription ingredient called delmopinol. Delmopinol actually coats the tooth forming a protective barrier! The chewing action helps to dislodge existing tartar and plaque. This is a prescription only product, that should be used once daily for optimal results. With a great taste dogs love and a nice scent for their people, these chews are a great addition to any dog’s routine and diet. Come in or make an appointment today to get these great chews!

Regular Grooming for Shedding Dogs
If your dog sheds a lot, it’s best to brush them at least once daily, so less fur ends up throughout your home or on your clothes. Beyond controlling shedding, regular brushing ensures that their coat stays free of mats, maintains the needed airflow along their skin, and distributes naturally occurring oils throughout their fur.

Bathing your dog once a month can also help reduce the fur flying around your home. bathing your dog too frequently can strip them of natural oils.

If your dog’s excessive shedding is due to dry skin, try a de-shedding dog shampoo. These usually have moisturizing ingredients to help hydrate skin, which may alleviate heavy shedding. Hypoallergenic and aloe-based dog shampoos are another good choice for skin and coat hydration. Overall, looking for a detangling shampoo or conditioner over a “de-shedding” option is a good idea, as this will make brushing more effective.

Use a high-velocity grooming blow dryer (not a human blow dryer) before a bath or between baths to blow out excess fur. This is faster than brushing at removing excess fur and is better than blocking up your bathtub drain when that fur gets washed away during a bath. Just be sure to wear a mask and do this in an area where a fur tornado is manageable, such as the garage or outdoors, if the weather is nice. Most dog grooming salons with self-wash services have these blow dryers for customer use.

Dogs of any age, size, or breed can have worms. The effects of the worms vary based on your dog’s age, health status, and the worm burden. The easiest way to treat worms in dogs is through prevention. To prevent worms in puppies and adult dogs, it’s important to:
🐶Provide proper environmental hygiene, such as cleaning up p**p immediately, treating your yard for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes, and routinely grooming your dog.
🐶Provide year-round prevention, starting in puppies as young as eight weeks and at 2.8 lbs.
🐶Plan for several f***l examinations during your puppy’s first year.
🐶Provide year-round protection against fleas and ticks.
🐶Regularly test for worms at least yearly, but more often may be necessary based on lifestyle.

Chewable medications can be an alternative to some film-coated tablets and liquids. While not all medical conditions can be treated and managed with chewable medications, they can make administering medications to some pets easier. That’s because chewable medications are made in the form of a treat.

Some benefits of chewable medications include:
✔Ease of administration. Many pets will readily take a treat, which is what some pets think a chewable medication is. When a medication is easier to administer, you know your pet is getting its full dose every time and you don’t risk missing a dose of their medication.
✔Less time-consuming for you. You’ll save time not having to pill your pet manually or hide the medication in food. You can quickly and easily confirm that your pet took the medication. Even better, you don’t have to spend time trying to re-pill them if they don't readily take a conventional tablet.
✔Saving money. You don’t have to purchase special treats or extra food to hide pills in anymore. You also won’t have to worry about your pet creating an aversion to a food or treat. If they taste the medication in a food or treat and then refuse to eat them again, you may have to transition your pet to a new diet or treat.
✔Less stress. This one is simple – there’s less stress throughout the day for your pet and you when they are eager to take their medication.
Improving your bond. You reinforce the bond with your pet when you turn medicating your pet into a positive experience. It also gets you back to your regular activities faster – who wouldn’t want that?
✔Better compliance. When your pet eagerly takes their medication, it makes you more likely to give the medication as directed. That means a healthier, happier pet, and that your vet and you are happier in the long run, too.

Ask your veterinarian if there’s a chewable version of the medication that they recommend for your pet.

🙋‍♀️: Why is it important to maintain your dog's vaccines?
👨‍⚕️: For the health of both pets and people, one of the most important reasons to maintain your dog's vaccines is rabies protection. Rabies can be transmitted to humans and is nearly 100% fatal to both people and pets, so it's essential we do everything we can to minimize disease exposure by vaccinating your pet.
Another reason pet owners should maintain their dog's vaccinations is to avoid having to restart the vaccine series in the future, costing more time and money in the long run. Vaccines need to be re-administered on a set schedule (in many cases annually, and with some vaccines, every three years), in order to keep a sufficient level of immunity. If a pet owner chooses not to administer vaccines this year, their dogs may have to “restart” the series and require a two-dose series next year to reach effective antibody levels – negating any financial savings this year and causing an extra veterinary visit and vaccination for your dog next year.

Ear mites are common in cats. Knowing how your cat can get ear mites and recognizing the signs will help you provide prompt treatment and avoid complications.

The typical signs of ear mite infestations in cats include:
😺Intense itchiness causing non-stop scratching of the ears
😺Head shaking
😺Inflamed outer ear (pinna)
😺Ears held flat against the head
😺Dark, gooey, foul-smelling wax and debris found at the entrance to the ear canal

Because the mites can be seen on other parts of the body, such as the neck, rump, and tail, cats may have signs of itchiness and rash in those locations. Signs can resemble those of a flea bite, food hypersensitivity, or environmental allergies. So, if your cat is suspected of having any of these, get them checked for ear mites as well.

🤔My new puppy seems difficult to house train. What can I do?
👨🏻‍⚕️Critical to your success in house training a puppy is constant throughout the day and over several months. Puppies can be easily trained if given a schedule for success. This means that they go out at the same times every day of the week. If you like to sleep in on the weekends, then for the next several weeks you must give this up. As your puppy ages, he will be able to hold his urine for a little longer each week, 8 hours at 12 weeks of age. Another area to address is feeding schedules. Offer food at fixed times and expect young puppies to need to go potty 1-45 minutes after eating. When your puppy does use the bathroom outside, then praise them lavishly.

There are several reasons why your dog may have a rash on their belly. Having the cause diagnosed is important for proper treatment and future prevention.

Causes of a rash on a dog’s belly include:
🐶Skin infections. A bacterial or fungal infection can develop and spread when the skin barrier becomes compromised. This can occur from a cut or abrasion, trauma, or excess moisture.
🐶Skin allergies. Environmental and food allergies can lead to scratching, causing trauma to the skin. This damage to the skin can lead to skin infections, with signs such as itchy bumps and rashes. When not addressed early, the condition can worsen quickly.
🐶Parasites. A rash can develop on your dog’s belly from a reaction to flea bites (called flea allergy dermatitis), mites (called demodectic or sarcoptic mange), mosquitoes, or ticks. The irritation can expose your dog to additional infections from bacteria or yeast.
🐶Hormonal conditions. Certain underlying medical conditions, such as Cushing’s disease or hypothyroidism, can initially show up as hair loss and belly rashes from secondary skin infections. The hormonal imbalances that these conditions create affect your dog’s immune system and ability to fight infection, as well as hair growth.
🐶Environmental irritants. Dogs can develop belly rashes because of contact dermatitis, an allergic reaction to substances that touch the skin. The relatively hairless belly in most dogs predisposes this area to contact dermatitis. Potential irritants include plants such as poison ivy, pine needles, grasses, mulch, household cleaners, carpet fresheners, shampoos, or other irritants when they touch the skin.
🐶Heat. Some dogs exposed to very hot conditions can develop a rash in skin folds. This can be seen more frequently in overweight dogs and dogs with many skin folds. If not addressed early, this rash can quickly worsen into a significant skin infection with oozing and smelly pimples and scabs.
The underlying cause of the rash will determine your dog’s treatment protocol. Contact us today to schedule an appointment:

Motion-based nausea is an occasional complaint to vets. In fact, this is a hurdle for some owners presenting pets for medical or maintenance care. There isn’t a database with statistics related to the prevalence of these symptoms. There is, probably, greater than half of the time an underlying cause for pets vomiting in cars. These underlying issues are not typically dangerous as much as frustrating. Common remedies are available and generally considered effective.

Preventing Mats in Your Cat’s Hair
Prevention is always the best option for keeping mats at bay, and it’s pretty simple.

😺Brush your cat daily. Even if it’s just one area each day, that’s fine. Brushing will limit the formation of mats and help you catch them early, so they’ll be much easier to work through with a brush or comb.
😺Consider a short cut. Having your cat’s hair trimmed shorter means it isn’t long enough to mat, but keep in mind this can impact their ability to keep warm in cooler temperatures.
😺Keep the backend clean. A messy posterior means more nasty stuff that can stick in the hair and start the matting process. An unscented, hypoallergenic pet wipe is an easy way to clean the backside. It’s also helpful to give your cat a sanitary cut where the longer hair is shaved around this messy area. You can have your groomer do this for all your cat’s sensitive matting areas (chest, inner thighs, etc.)
😺Use the right tools. Different brushes and combs do different things. Talk with your veterinarian or groomer about the best way to brush your cat at home. If you’re using a tool with metal prongs, make sure they’re not too sharp.

🤔My vet always comments that my dogs teeth aren’t in the best shape but never recommends what to do to fix this problem.
👨🏻‍⚕️As a dog owner and a veterinarian, I recognize that human animal bond required closeness – my dogs are always in my face. During these times my dogs breath the outward appearance of his teeth and gums are indictors of oral health. I know he doesn’t brush and so I have to maintain his teeth for him. If his teeth are yellow to brown colored and his breath stinks I clean them. The reason is that tarter is from bacteria are then picked up in the blood- stream and allowed to “visit” major internal organs this scenario which over a lifetime can lead to a slow deterioration of major organs.
