🤔Hypothetical Question: My cat is chewing and clawing at his hind end and has lost hair and developed sores in this area. It seems this is all he does now. What is going on?
👨🏻‍⚕️Advice: Based on your description this is consistent with fleas allergy. While it is one thing for a pet to have fleas, it is an altogether different and worse clinical disease if an animal is allergic to the flea saliva. A flea allergic animal has a severe inflammatory reaction to the saliva of the flea after only one bite. The treatment is a vacation from fleas and depending on the severity of the sores an antibiotic may be needed. Often it is necessary to use two flea products at the same time to provide the vacation. One product is directed to the adult flea while the other is inhibiting the development of immature fleas.

Found a tick on your dog? 🐾 Don't panic, but STOP before you pull it!
Removing a tick the wrong way (like squeezing its body or twisting) can actually push dangerous organisms and bacteria into your dog's bloodstream, increasing the risk of disease. 🤢
It's important to keep your cool and use the right tools. Here’s the safe way to remove a tick:
✅ GEAR UP: Put on rubber gloves and grab a tick removal tool (best!) or very fine-point tweezers. Disinfect your tool with rubbing alcohol.
✅ GET CLOSE: Part your dog's fur. Get the tool as close to your dog's skin as possible to grab the tick by its HEAD, not its body.
✅ PULL STRAIGHT UP: Pull upward with steady, even pressure. DO NOT twist or jerk. This can cause the head to break off in the skin.
✅ CLEAN & SAVE: Disinfect the bite area with rubbing alcohol. Place the tick in a sealed jar with a bit of alcohol (this kills it and saves it for your vet, just in case).
✅ MONITOR: Watch your dog for the next few weeks for any signs of illness like fever, lethargy, joint swelling, or changes in appetite.
What if the head gets stuck? Try to gently remove it with your tweezers. If you can't, don't dig! Call your veterinarian for help.
The BEST defense is prevention! Talk to your vet about the best year-round flea, tick, and heartworm protection for your dog.

Heartgard Plus is a beefy chewable that your pet takes once monthly to prevent heartworms and treat intestinal parasites. As one of the oldest preventions, it has proven to be a very trustworthy product, which is shown in Merial’s Heartgard Plus Guarantee. Merial states, “The Plus Guarantee remains in force only when you obtain Heartgard Plus from a licensed veterinarian with whom you have a valid doctor-owner-pet relationship. If you are not satisfied with the performance of Heartgard Plus against heartworms, hookworms, and/or roundworms, all or a portion of treatment costs may be covered.” That confidence and the ease of administration of the product makes Heartgard a very popular prevention. Why Does My Vet Want a Urine Sample? 🐾
Ever wonder why your veterinarian asks for a urine sample from your pet? That little sample is a powerhouse of information!
A routine urinalysis is a key part of your pet's wellness. It gives us a deep look into their health and can help us detect painful, costly, or even life-threatening diseases before your pet shows any signs.
A urinalysis helps us check for: 🔬 Kidney function & hydration 🧪 Diabetes (by checking for glucose) 🦠 Urinary tract infections (bacteria) 💎 Painful crystals or bladder stones 🩺 Liver issues & more
Did you know? The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends a baseline urinalysis for young pets, annually for mature pets, and every 6-12 months for seniors.
Don't skip this simple, powerful test! Ask us about a urinalysis at your pet's next wellness exam.

Nearly 40% of dogs suffer from osteoarthritis (OA) pain, but because the signs are so subtle, it often goes completely undetected. Don't let common myths keep your best friend from living a comfortable, happy life.

Here are three key truths every dog owner should know:

🐾 Pain is often silent. Instead of crying or limping, dogs with OA pain may just seem "lazier," have trouble getting up, or constantly lick a joint.

🐾 It's not just an "old dog" disease. OA can begin in dogs as young as 8 months old. What many owners think is just "slowing down" is actually a sign of chronic pain.

🐾 It IS manageable! While there's no cure, OA can be successfully managed with weight control, proper exercise, and safe, effective medications from your vet.

Being your dog's advocate starts with knowing the facts. If you've noticed any changes in your dog's mobility or routine, it's time for a conversation with your veterinarian.

🤔Hypothetical Question: Does it matter what I feed my pets?
👨🏻‍⚕️Advice: Yes, if you consider your dog or cat from three points of view: genetics, environment and nutrition. First consider their individual genetics. You cannot control genetically preprogrammed diseases from appearing- you may detect them early and slow the progression. Next consider that you can control their environment to a degree that in the sense that you provide shelter food and water and hopefully vaccination against deadly diseases. Finally, you can absolutely control what goes into an animal's mouth both in terms of quality and quantity.

Does your dog suffer from constant itching, head shaking, or a musty "corn chip" odor? These are classic signs of a yeast infection, one of the most frustrating skin conditions for our furry friends.
A yeast infection isn't just a surface-level problem. It's an overgrowth of the natural fungus on your dog's skin, almost always caused by an underlying condition like:
✅ Allergies (food or environmental)
✅ Hormonal disorders
✅ A suppressed immune system
Commonly affected areas include the ears, paws, belly, and any skin folds.
Because the root cause must be treated, a trip to the vet is essential. They can perform tests to confirm the infection and create a targeted treatment plan, which might include medicated shampoos, topical treatments, or oral anti-fungals.

Don't wait for the itch to get worse! A proper diagnosis is the first step to a happy, comfortable pup. Give us a call today at (863) 251-5887 or visit us online to schedule an appointment: www.careanimalclinicfl.com

🤔My new puppy seems difficult to house train. What can I do?
👨🏻‍⚕️Critical to your success in house training a puppy is constant throughout the day and over several months. Puppies can be easily trained if given a schedule for success. This means that they go out at the same times every day of the week. If you like to sleep in on the weekends, then for the next several weeks you must give this up. As your puppy ages, he will be able to hold his urine for a little longer each week, 8 hours at 12 weeks of age. Another area to address is feeding schedules. Offer food at fixed times and expect young puppies to need to go potty 1-45 minutes after eating. When your puppy does use the bathroom outside, then praise them lavishly.

🤔Hypothetical Question: My cat sneezes and coughs in fits and seems to struggle to breathe. He does this periodically and doesn't seem to have any other problems other than these episodes. Sometimes it worries me, should I bring him in?

👨🏻‍⚕️Advice: Your cat sounds like it may be affected by feline asthma. By itself, asthma is a manageable disease for cats. As in humans, there is no cure for it, but the severity of the life-threatening episodes can be controlled. The exact cause of asthma in cats is not known, but the reason cats are susceptible is due to increased muscles in the walls of the bronchioles and higher numbers of mucus-secreting cells. The muscles spasm and the muscles cells secrete and close off the smaller airways causing these fits, obviously, if enough airways are closed off then possibility for suffocation exists. Multiple medical managements are available.
