"Beware the Canary in the Coal Mine"!
Happy Wednesday.
Ever heard the phrase "canary in the coal mine?"
Well, every time I hear those 5 words, I can't help but wonder what dog might be the next canary.
Let me explain.
Back in the 1800's, canaries used to be more than just household pets.
Coal miners would take these tiny little, yellow birds down into the mines with them.
That's because canaries are sensitive to the buildup of deadly gasses in the air.
The miners knew that if the canary stopped singing and died, there were dangerous gasses present.
And they'd quickly leave the mine.
Seems cruel, I know.
But because of what these tiny little birds did to save human lives…
The phrase "canary in the coal mine" became a lasting symbol for anything that might warn of a coming disaster.
So what's this got to do with dogs?
Unfortunately… a lot more than you might care to know.
That's because there are always hidden defects and contaminants lurking within many dog foods.
Defects not yet discovered by anyone.
What's worse…
Dog parents mistakenly believe pet food is regularly tested by some official government agency.
Like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
But that's simply NOT the case.
Truth is…
No government agency monitors and tests dog food. Not even the FDA.
The only thing the FDA requires is that pet foods "be safe to eat… contain no harmful substances, and be truthfully labeled".
And since the FDA lacks the resources needed to monitor and test the thousands of dog food products and batches made every day...
Exactly HOW any brand achieves such a critical goal is left up to the company itself.
In other words… the honor system.
It's like putting the fox in charge of the hen house.
So how does the FDA discover defective dog food?
Sadly…
A dog must first become SICK or DIE before the defective food is reported to a company or the FDA.
And before it can be tested or recalled.
Since recall events are LAGGING indicators, they can only tell you something's wrong with a pet food AFTER something bad happens.
When it's too late.
Which is why I urge you to look for LEADING indicators.
Things that can warn you about dog foods that are more likely to contain flaws and defects.
BEFORE something bad happens.
That way, you can avoid buying dangerous brands in the first place.
There are 2 LEADING indicators that can help you avoid some of the riskiest dog foods on the market.
First... avoid repeat offenders.
These are brands that have had multiple recalls over a short to moderate period of time.
Repeat offenders should be avoided… until they prove OVER TIME that they're once again worthy of your trust.
And finally…
When the FDA discovers a particular pet food company has violated one of its critical safety rules in a major way, they send the manufacturer an official Warning Letter.
Here’s why that's SO important.
FDA Warning Letters are only issued for the most serious safety and sanitary violations.
And only after an official, in-person FDA inspection.
Which is why I never ignore them. And neither should you.
Bottom line…
Don't let your dog become the next canary in the coal mine.
Favor pet food brands with solid safety histories.

Jumping up on furniture and down from furniture as they get older can be dangerous and expensive if the break a hip or joint. This is a very sturdy ramp and has 3 adjustable heights. I place it where she spends most of her time during the day and then move it into the living room with us in the evening against the couch. At night before bedtime, I just fold it up and shove it under the bed and take it out the next morning. It wasn't hard to train her to use it, a couple of days maybe and I really think she likes it!
