ODIN is cured of FIP !!!!
A week after Odin, a black young adult from a very rural shelter, went to his new foster to adopt home he was unfortunately diagnosed with FIP. FIP or Feline Infectious Peritonitis is a deadly disease afflicting more and more cats worldwide.
Thank god his foster mom Diana Serres researched FIP and found the Facebook group FIP WARRIORS 5.0.
FIP WARRIORS 5.0 is the most amazing volunteer organization of owners, rescuers and veterinary staff who one way or another have had to deal with this god awful FIP. With their guidance along with Dr Kathy Werden Odin was immediately started on the FIP protocol to hopefully save his life. The Serres family opted to not return Odin to Helping Homeless Felines but to go the route whatever it took to try and save Odin’s life . It was a rough road that included routine bloodwork and testing, painful daily injections of serum antibodies, skin sores, and immense stress for all concerned….. Odin had 84 days of daily injections and then 84 days of the “observation” period to see if the treatment was effective.
The cost of the medication is very expensive but it is truly a lifesaver for cats afflicted with FIP. Helping Homeless Felines was on board to sponsor Odin's medical costs since Diana and Todd were 100% committed to saving this wonderful cat’s life. They knew this was going to be a very long haul with ups and downs and no certainty that Odin would be cured.
A very special shout-out to Dr Kathy Werden and her extraordinary staff at Harmony Hill AH in Sterling, VA for their expertise and attention to Odin as well as the FIP WARRIORS 5.0 group for their support and guidance through this 6 plus month journey to save Odin’s life.
It needs to be also mentioned Helping Homeless Felines was able to sponsor most of Odin’s medical/veterinary care through the amazing grant awarded us by Community Foundation for Loudoun County’s Ursula Landsrath Animal Fund. This grant is going to continue “pawing forward” by allowing Helping Homeless Felines to help other FIP rescue cats through sponsorship and/or providing resources and supplies for newly diagnosed FIP cats.
The word has to get out to veterinarians all over that FIP can be cured….this treatment is not for every FIP cat or family of a sick FIP feline due to many factors but hopefully over time the cost of the medication will go down and more and more resources become available so NO cat has to die of FIP….
We are so proud of Odin…. He is now cured and healthy. GO ODIN SERRES!!! And thank you to Diana Serres for “paying forward” by being a volunteer administrator on the FIP Warriors 5.0 group.
