Dear friends of Bert: I have been very remiss about posting Bert pictures, but mostly because our girl is in a very steady decline, which is not pleasant posting material. Over the last almost year, canine dementia has kicked in, along with severe hind leg weakness, a mysterious and uncomfortable rash that makes her head itch, and a bunch of other stuff she already had on her plate. She has been a good sport about it all, and continues to be the sweetest and most gentle animal I have ever known. But her constant falls (10-20 times a day) combined with the disorientation, etc. is starting to be too much. She does not seem to be in pain, and I will keep it that way. I don’t think her time with us will be much longer, and maybe I’m publicly posting that here as my own way to prepare. I don’t even know, to be honest. All I do know is that this dog is my heart and soul, and I will do everything to make her last days with us as beautiful and loving as possible. She rests a lot (as you can see!) but also enjoys time spent with her buddies, me, and my guy. She is wholly loved.
