With the arctic weather approaching, here are a few helpful livestock tips I have found helpful over the years.
•A draft free shelter is key. I have used straw bales in a U shape for extra protection from any wind coming in and for them to snuggle in.
•FRESH water and preferably warm. I usually fill buckets with hot water and by the time I get it to the barn it is perfectly warm for them to drink and they have learned to drink it as soon as I offer to them. I also bring them a warm bucket of water 3 times a day to increase drinking.
•extra straw bedding will help keep them warm.
•Hay at all times to keep their tummy full and warm.
• when we are in the single digits, I use a Premier1 heat lamp. I usually don’t recommend heat lamps but the Premier1 lamps have many safety features.
Hope these tips are helpful, stay warm!
