Purgatory Falls in New Hampshire is a beautiful waterfall with a dark twist! The 3.8-mile roundtrip hike leads you past Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls along Purgatory Brook. The Upper Falls, a 25-foot cascade through a rocky gorge, is also home to local legend. As the tale goes, the Devil once invited churchmen to a bean feast here, cooking over the fires of the Underworld. He overheated the pot, melted the rock, and got stuck...leaving behind “The Devil’s Bean Pot” and “The Devil’s Footprint,” still visible today. Even with that creepy legend going around, the upper falls were once a bustling spot with a dance hall and bowling alley during the early 1900's...but Purgatory Grove, as it was known then, fell into ruin after the Great Depression. At the Lower Falls, you can still spot ruins of an old sawmill lost to fire in the 1950s.
