Most horse people drink some variety of Kool-Aid.

For some, it’s a round over fences, horses’ knees up by their eyeballs, never missing a change. For others it’s a show ring class, knees up by their eyeballs in a park trot. For some it’s a charge over solid jumps at 570 meters per minute, hoping to come home unscathed. For some it’s 16 perfect tempi changes. Or a sliding stop. Or a quiet walk in the meadow on a loose rein listening to bird-song.

And every one of the Kool-Aid imbibers probably believes that THIS way is the right way, the true path.

I guess the first question is the horseman’s question---"Does this activity hurt or scare the horse?” If not, one’s as valid as another, just a difference in taste.

Some photos demand a second look. And then another, because your eyes are NOT deceiving you! Sandra Hall says in this, her second submission in our series of "Favorite Photos from our Favorite Photographers:"

“I’m always looking at show horse’s legs when I shoot; the timing has to be perfect. So, I had no idea of the significance of this photo until my son, Wes Hall, asked me later if I got THE shot of Matt Shiflet making his victory pass with WCC, RWGC ‘CH Honey Badger.’ We looked and I HAD... totally unaware that Matt had dropped the reins on the horse’s neck and racked out. You can see where his hands were placed, just like he's holding the reins! Again, in the right place at the right time, watching legs....”

“It’s never the horse’s fault," is the mantra of riding instructors everywhere. But is this an over-correction to a world where excuses run rampant, or does it really mean what it says? To answer this question you have to dig a bit deeper into what the statement means – and what it does...

From a post in group, maybe useful to someone here: Purchased this mare in 2019. 2020 the fluff spot, she had completely rubbed bald after the photo. I had tried (without sucess) a number of feeds and supplements. I looked around and found some people using a 10% sulfur ointment, I used this once a week for about 2-3 months. After that I have not used the ointment or anything special, over a year later the issue appears resolved. Environment, feed, care, are other factors for my results, too much to list here! I may in the near future add something to my page on it. Best of luck!
