Victoria forwarded this study to me.

"They found the horses showed pain relief at every tested point on the back after caudal traction, Hyytiäinen said. The horses benefited most in the thoracic region—the part of the back over the rib cage that would support a saddle—with 83% improvement. Pain relief in the pelvis area improved by 52%, and the lumbar region by 50%"

"This method should only be used by an educated professional, a physiotherapist, who has appropriate understanding of the entirety of the horse’s situation and skills to apply the technique safely and correctly."

Scientists found that a professional’s light, steady, straight pull at a slightly downward angle relieved pain at several sites along the equine spine.

Thanks Michelle for sharing this gals article! A good take on the hyoid and connecting fascia to create a whole picture of the horse.

“… a restriction, pain or any dysfunction in the hyoid may have a direct impact on the mobility of the forelimb, leading to a possibly shortened or stilted gait. This can be transferred to the hindquarter as an inability to engage the hindlimbs. So we see that the hyoid and the tongue affects movement of the head, poll, and jaw, and also of the forelimb. Indirectly it connects to the hindlimb as well, through muscular chains and through the fascia. We can expect to see many areas affected by dysfunction in the hyoid bone, including the ability to perform lateral movement, the range of motion of the cervical spine, tension in the ventral muscles of the neck (and a tendency for the horse to go behind the bit to relieve that tension), a potentially hollow back and a shortened, stilted stride.”

A well-trained horse with a skilled rider can often perform some of the most complex movements without saddle or bridle, their skill surpassing any need for specific equipment. Riders like Alizée Froment demonstrate exactly this – that communication depends on the skill of horse and rider much mo...

Learning a lot about oxidative stress and different causes for it. I've noticed a change in Maxx after giving him an increased amount of vit. E everyday.

The exact reason horses crib remains unknown. Some suggest that cribbing horses have unmet dietary or management needs. Others believe that altered biological functions are the culprits, such as decreased antioxidant levels or increased oxidative stress. Because trace elements, such as selenium, pro...

Come join Whole Horse and Bodhi Equus for the first Clicker Club meeting of 2020!!!

We are trying out a weekday evening for those of you who have in the past been unable to make our weekend morning meetings. The $10 class fee includes a clicker and take-home study materials. :)

Thank you to working student Talika Maria Zieglerler for doing a great job of showing how well Oak self-loads, and to Hannah Greindl of Reitschule Schweizer for letting us use her and Farid's lovely photo showing their amazing liberty work!

Hannah and I used to play around with all sorts of clicker and liberty work when we were both working in France together. ❤️ Can't believe this video will be 4 years old this month! 😲

About Bodhi Equus

Bodhi Equus is an equine classical training program rooted in bio-mechanics and respect for the horse. Owner Shelbie Fredenhagen is a classical equitation trainer, riding instructor and traveling clinician.

Bodhi Equus is primarily based in North Central Florida with Mikaila Herold of Whole Horse Equitation. They team up to put on educational classes on subjects such as operant conditioning and demonstrations of different work with horses. During the summer months, Bodhi Equus is based in Ancourage, Alaska where Shelbie is originally from. Shelbie returns frequently to the Pacific North West to give clinics.

Shelbie prides herself in creating fluid, individualized training programs which result in relaxed, reliable horses. Shelbie uses integrated bodywork and cross-training methods rooted in classical principles which honor the horse's nature. Her training always surrounds the well-being and longevity of the horse. Shelbie welcomes any discipline, breed, or age of horse and specializes in starting green horses and rehabilitation.

Riding is a highly individualized process for both horse and rider. Shelbie looks at the horse's conformation and takes into consideration any history provided, while evaluating the rider's own knowledge and skill set in order to create an individualized lesson program that is progressive for both horse and rider. She continuously seeks sound solutions through ethical practice.
