Beyond Awareness, Action

International Dog Day isn’t just about raising awareness; it’s about inspiring action. Here are ways we can all contribute to a better future for dogs:

Adopt, don’t shop: Consider opening your heart and home to a shelter dog who desperately needs a loving family.

Volunteer at your local animal shelter: Offer your time and skills to help care for and socialize shelter dogs, increasing their chances of adoption.

Support dog-related charities: Donate to organizations working to improve the lives of dogs, aiding their rescue efforts, rehabilitation programs, and education initiatives.

Advocate for responsible dog ownership: Encourage responsible pet care practices in your community, promoting proper training, ethical breeding, and responsible dog ownership.

Camara is now a regular visitor to tbe Gunjur Dog Patrol office at Footsteps Eco Lodge, The Gambia.

Camara was suffering with mango worms, ear wounds and a nasty skin rash. He has had regular visits from the Dog Rangers and now is a happy and healthy friend of the team.

Rambo and her puppies 💔 were suffering from a terrible amount of mango worm 😔 Gunjur Dog Patrol have been visiting daily and supporting the owners to make sure the dogs are better cared for. Take a look at the pictures now - much better thank you to Blaise and Lamin 🙏🏻

It’s important for dog owners to take precautions to avoid such an uncomfortable experience:

✔️ Provide a clean place for the dog(s) to sleep and check the bedding regularly. Bedding should be dry.

✔️ Wash the bedding with hot water - this helps to kill any larvae.

✔️ Check the dog(s) daily for any raised lumps on the skin. These could be mango worms.

✔️ Bathe your dog(s) carefully. If you don’t have shampoo, you can use salt water. Take care not to frighten the dog.

✔️ Remove rotting fruit from your compound and areas where your dog(s) is. This attracts the flies.

✔️ Ask for support from the Dog Rangers if you need to. Or, a local vet or animal expert.

Give a big welcome to our new Dog Ranger, Ajie Njie. 😊🐾👏She will be working with Lamin and Blaise three days a week, which enable us to help even more dogs in Gunjur!

Here she is with Suski, who had many mango worms which Ajie removed. As a result, another happy dog. 😊

Sadly, ear wounds are common on dogs in Gambia. They can become easily infected and infested 😔

This is another dog that has had lots of attention from Lamin and Blaise. As you can see, the wound has healed well.

Before and after pictures of Tiger and Bless. Tiger and Bless live together and were anaemic and not eating; they had very little strength.

With regular visits from the Gunjur Dog Patrol both dogs are eating and getting stronger. Thank you 🙏🏻🐶😔

This is B-Girl as a puppy and then as a young, adult dog. Lamin and Blaise have been regularly visiting B-Girl and her family. When she was a pup, she had terrible mango worm 😔. After regular visits, education and check ups - this little lady is doing really well 🙏🏻🐶🐾

There are many puppies in the village these days ... Lamin and Blaise try to keep an eye on them and sharing their knowledge with the owners on how to keep the puppies healthy, and to be with their mum for at least the two first months of their lives.
In the pictures are Thunder and Flower with their litters.

This is Queen. she is a lovely lady that is struggling with wounds on her ear and head. Slowly slowly it is improving, and the wounds are getting smaller.

Can anyone offer this lovely young dog a home. A lady saved it but is no longer able to care for it and is desperately looking for a good home for it.

Dragon is feeling much better. The wounds on her ears were painful for her.

Poor Bokzy! Bokzy had some troublesome wounds on her ears. Lamin and Blaise have been visiting her and treating her regularly. She is recovering well 🙏🏻 🐶🐾

We are seeing more and more mango worms in dogs as the rainy season is approaching. Poor mummy Rambo here and her puppies had a really bad infestation. Lamin and Blaise will be visiting them regularly to make sure they recover. Many of our visits these days are mango worm related.

As Lamin and Blaise work through one dog at a time; a lot of their time is also spent preventing it happening in the first place. They share their knowledge to dog owners to keep their dogs dry, give them a secure place to sleep away from the sandy ground and care well for them.

This poor little fella is called Uncle antenna.

Uncle antenna is a local puppy. Unfortunately, he had a lot of mango worms which were not properly dealt with.

Blaise and Lamin have been regularly visiting this little guy. All the mango worms have been safely removed, his skin treated and he is recovering well. He is feeling much happier and is pleased to see the team when they arrive. Gunjur Dog Patrol will keep a close eye on him moving forward.

Oscar is an old boy. He had some uncomfortable skin rashes causing some hair loss. This is likely caused from mites. The dog rangers have been visiting Oscar and his owners. He’s much more comfortable now and we’ll

Tell That

Tell That’s injury was so bad we can’t post the first photo 😔 as it may be distressing.

She was one of our first customers 💕she had a nasty wound, full of maggots 😔.

But look at Tell That now! She’s always so happy to see the dog rangers too. Well done team! 🙏🏻🐶🐾

Rambo

Rambo had mange. Mange is a parasitic skin disease. This can be quite uncomfortable and causes the dogs to scratch a lot, hair loss and crusty skin. It can be very painful.

The dog rangers have been visiting Rambo regularly. Here are some of the improvement photos. We haven’t added the before photos as they may be a little distressing.

Meet another dog called Happy. He was bitten by a dog and the bite led to a big wound with dozens of maggots in it.. poor dog, he was in such agony. Our Dog Rangers have been visiting him every second day for the past 3-4 weeks, treating him and dressing his wound.

It is so wonderful to see how he is recovering, and the community engagement during the process. 🐾 Not many days now, and his wound will have closed up and healed. The first couple of photos are recent, and the other ones from the second visit.
