🐱 Whiskers are hairs that are twice as thick as normal hairs on the cat's body and sit three times as deep under their skin. They have approximately 24 located on their cheeks, but whiskers can also be found above the eyes and on the back of the forelegs!

The base of each whisker is packed with nerve endings that convey large amounts of information about the cat’s surrounding, making for a highly sensitive built-in navigational system. 🧭

Whiskers help a cat work out where objects are in relation to their head and legs, to help them judge spaces and negotiate their environment. This can be through touch, but whiskers also detect air pressure and air currents which can help cats figure out the location of objects even if they’ve lost sight of them. 🐈

You may have noticed a whisker or two that has fallen out around the home, but this is a perfectly regular body process and nothing to worry about! 😺

Tortoiseshell cats, sometimes called ‘torties’, are known for their uniquely beautiful multi-coloured coats. 😻 Tortoiseshell isn’t actually a breed, it’s a coat pattern, just like tabby. 🐈

The science behind the ‘shell 👇

🧬 Tortoiseshells have not one, but two co-dominant colour genes (black and orange) working together to make the unique coat patterns.

🧬 Most tortoiseshell cats are females because it’s the two X chromosomes that carry the genetic information for coat colour. The Y chromosome that males have, doesn’t impact on their coat colour. But sometimes a male cat can be born with XXY chromosomes, making it possible but unusual for a tortoiseshell coat!

🌱 When shouldn’t you use catnip, silver vine, Tatarian honeysuckle or valerian with cats? They can be nice enrichment for cats but, because of the increased levels of excitement that some cats may experience, there are situations where we should give greater consideration about using them👇

🚗 During travel

🩺 During veterinary examinations or procedures

🐈 During grooming sessions

😾 Where there is conflict in a multi-pet home, a history of aggression or problem behaviours in general (unless under the guidance of an animal behaviourist)

🏠 When there are changes to the cat’s environment that may cause anxiety or frustration, like unfamiliar people or new animals in the house

⚠️ Using catnip in environments that are restricted in space (e.g., veterinary hospital cages, boarding cattery and homing centre pens) must be considered with caution and on an individual basis - if the cat becomes very excited, it will make interactions and handling challenging.

📱 Is a smartphone app the future of feline pain assessment?
In a recent study, AI technology and the Feline Grimace Scale were used to predict facial landmark positions and pain scores of images of 3,447 cats, and demonstrated excellent accuracy when discriminating between acutely painful and non-painful cats. Developing an automated smartphone application using this technology could improve the accuracy of feline pain assessment and reduce individual bias and workload in the clinic.

¿Cuántos gatos había en las casas de los antiguos egipcios?

Sabemos que los gatos eran muy valorados en el antiguo Egipto y que los faraones y sus familias a menudo poseían grandes cantidades de gatos como mascotas y compañeros.

Por ejemplo, en la tumba del faraón Tutankamón se encontraron más de 200 momias de gatos, lo que indica que tuvo un gran número de gatos durante su vida.
También se sabe que otros faraones poseían una gran cantidad de gatos, como Ramsés II, de quien se dice que tuvo más de 400 gatos.

El sitio de Tuna El Gabal (gobernación de Minya) en el centro de Egipto alberga el cementerio de gatos más grande conocido en el mundo. En este sitio se han encontrado más de 2 millones de momias de gatos.

Los gatos eran vistos simplemente como compañeros cariñosos y afectuosos.🐈
