Kira was a puppymill mum, which meant she was not even considered a dog. She was just a nameless creature whose worth was only measured by the pups she could produce. And when she couldn’t produce any anymore she was abandoned.

But Kira is so much more than “just a dog.” She survived what would have broken most, and she remained gentle and affectionate despite it all.

Kira has been treated, sterilised and vaccinated. All she needs now is a family who will choose her for life — not for her breed, not for pups, not for profit and not for ego. Just to love and to be loved 💙

Mavis didn’t need a lot — just a second chance. A senior boxer we rescued some time ago, Mavis found a home that saw past her age and recognised the beautiful soul she’s always been. A little care, a little patience, and she’s thriving now. Quiet, steady, and finally where she belongs.

There are so many older dogs waiting for that same chance. If you’re thinking of adopting, consider the seniors. They settle in quietly, love deeply, and ask for very little beyond a safe place to live.

We are nowhere near this in Sri Lanka but this is such a huge step forward for our dogs and cats 🎉 the fact that this is happening shows there is actually a need for this change.

"Scientists launched a toolkit on Tuesday to assess a dog on 10 traits, called the innate health assessment (IHA). Only dogs that score an eight or above will be permitted to be bred under licensing requirements for official breeders.

The list includes merle colouration, which means a mottled or marbled colouring, wrinkly skin, flat faces, saggy or out-turned eyelids, bulging eyes, under or overbite, no tail, twisted legs, shortened legs and stiff spines.

Studies have shown animals born with these features suffer pain, discomfort and frustration from birth."

Surpriseee!!!

Miss Pad Thai had been keeping a secret from all of us. Due to her large and cushy body frame and age we never thought to investigate much until she suddenly decided to give birth while she was being checked on a table on the hospital!!!

We think she would have gotten crossed when she was abandoned on the road as she was in heat at the time. Her ear and health were so bad when we picked her up our focus was on getting her better - little did we imagine that we made her this much better 🥹

We now have three beautiful, wiggly lab × Sri lankan breed pups and a very tired but happy mamma.

The pups will be rehomed when they are old enough ( minimum 8 weeks), well socialised and vaccinated 💙 Pad Thai will be rehomed with one of her pups so that this time around she gets to keep at least one of her babies.

The fear of constantly having had her pups taken away is so clear as Pad Thai gets really worried every time someone comes near her pups. The physical and psychological horror breeding mamma's go through is so clear and heartbreaking 💔 of course she never has to go through that again 💙💙

For 7 years, Tails of Freedom has been run almost entirely by our incredible volunteers — the heart and soul of everything we do. 💚

As we’ve grown and started helping more animals, we’ve realised it’s time to take the next step: bringing a few dedicated people on board who can give consistent time and structure to keep our rescue running strong.

As you can see from the video, he is a truly lovely dog- loves cuddles, loves playtime and loves people 🤗!
