After nearly a week of treatment, Astrid's rash and blood levels are improving. After being neglected for so long, her body has been responding slowly but consistently to the best nutrition and medical care we can offer her. When she was rescued, Astrid's rash was causing her skin to break open and bleed all over her body, and a lot of her wounds were infected and smelly. This is, thankfully, no longer the case 💜 Her energy has also picked up, and she is getting better slowly. Despite being incredibly full, we are doing the very best we can for her. Apollo is a case that breaks our hearts. We haven't been able to write an update on him until now, but we got his reports back a couple of days ago, and his treatment started straight after he was rescued. Apollo is only 2 years old. He is almost fully blind and he can't walk, likely because his muscles are too weak to hold him up at this stage. He has spent so long in a cage and only been fed vegetables and rice. He has multiple wounds on his paws and is missing several toenails, likely from clawing at his cage 😢 and yet... he is the gentlest, sweetest boy. To make things worse, Apollo also vomits so much of his food. Though we would like to feed him a whole lot of food in one go, we can't. Dogs who have not been fed properly like him need small, regular meals, which we are currently feeding him in an elevated position. Astrid's reports came in, showing that she is aneamic with a low thyroxine count - both things can generally be easily treated, but her rash is going to take a lot of work. The rash is the result of a combination of issues that is causing her skin to ooze and break out in many places. It's painful and smelly, causing her to bleed in places where it is particularly bad. Astrid is thankfully very friendly, happy girl , though sometimes a little unpredictable. Still, this makes her treatment a lot easier, and we hope we will begin to see her improve soon. She is sadly only about 2 to 3 years old at most. Apollo (formerly Roman) spent the majority of his life in this cage. He has only been fed vegetables and leftover rice. He is almost fully blind, his paw pads are badly injured, and he is barely able to walk. Thankfully, Amaya, who saw Apollo, spoke to his owners and convinced them to give him up (they opted to sell him for 10,000/=, which Amaya kindly paid to get him released) The level of depression and uncertainty that Apollo is in is unfathomable, and it will take time to help him heal, but he is now safe and receiving help. We are yet to see what his blood reports will show. We have taken on a crazy number of rescues in the last 24 hours, and we really really need help as two are in critical care. Annie was part of a litter of Cane Corso puppies advertised for sale that someone saw on a popular Sri Lankan online site that sells animals. There are no checks and balances here, no regulations, no welfare. The picture posted is often different from the actual condition of the animals in many cases. When the person who saw the ad got there, only one pup was left, and he picked her up and ganded her to us. All the pups were female, and we don't know where they went or how they will be used. Annie's back legs are phenomenally bad, her nutrition is extremely poor, and she is terrified of all human interaction. We have begun her treatment, and we are working on her socialisaiton, but we are so full to the brim and desperately need funds and adoptions. *Rescue Alert* We received this video and was told that this little girl was found on the road dragging herself. We don't know who could have done this, but she was clearly in a home until she had an accident. Often, we find that dogs like Yara are bought for one purpose, and that is breeding. They are easily discarded if they can not or have no hope of producing puppies. Sadly, Yara has experienced this at a very, very young age 😞 Unlicenced, unregulated breeding in a country with no animal welfare laws often works like this: no hope of puppies = too much work = zero value = cull/dump on the street 😞 Yara is now with us and receiving treatment because cases like this we really can't say no to however full and overwhelmed we are. Gladys is tiny, floofy and fiesty. She was found dumped in the garbage with a bad rash and a missing eye. This is the 3rd ad we are putting up for her 😞 Exploited in the commercial breeding industry, Gladys is another example of the fate that befalls senior dogs who can’t produce any more puppies. Thankfully Gladys was rescued, treated, vaccinated and sterilized. She is beautifully fluffy and will require a regular groom. She has only one eye and reminds us of a tiny pirate but is perfectly independent. While Gladys is a little afraid of people to start with, she warms up quickly. Sweet Blossom is still waiting for a forever home. It’s heartbreaking that she has been used like a machine for puppies by a breeder for her entire life, and now when she finally has a chance to enjoy freedom and happy life in the few years she has left – that she is spending it in a hospital. Blossom seeks love and affection from her humans every possible moment. She is an older dog, so she doesn’t run around, she doesn’t poop everywhere, she doesn’t bite. She just seeks love. She does need easy access to a garden and can’t do stairs because of a broken leg that is fixed incorrectly, but she is completely independent and mobile. She’s great with other dogs. Benji was all but dead when he came in. Without MRI facilities or proper diagnostics, we had no idea what to expect, but we took him on because a week is not sufficient to make any decisions on how things would go. Benji's head wound was full of pus and blood that kept oozing for weeks and altered the shape of his head. For several days, it had to be drained manually to help keep him going. He was completely flat with his head frozen in a fixed position, arching backwards. And now to see this. To have Benji sit up and hold his head up is a massive victory. Blossom has received 0 calls since our last post for her. She is the sweetest girl you will ever meet. But she is often passed by because of her age and her limp. She can’t control either of these things and deserves to be loved more for them. This is a case that has been jointly taken on by @tailsoffreedomsl (medical bills) and @thelittleislandsanctuary (everything other than medical). Post written by @shilpa.samaratunge I've wanted to write this post out so many times over the last two weeks, but I have not had the words or the strength to do so. Another rescuer reached out to me a couple of weeks ago about a pupper who she had taken in but felt the case was too complicated to manage on her own. So we took the case on. Benji is at most 2 months old. He is a mix of either a german shepherd or a pomeranian. He was thrown out of a moving vehicle and suffered quite severe head trauma. He is paralysed, with extreme swelling and a badly infected wound on his head. He was almost fully stiffened out. We are trying everything we know and can to help him, and think it will be quite some time before he is better - if he does get better. With no MRI facilities to truly see the damage, we don't know what else may present itself as time goes by, but for now, we know he is responding to treatment and improving slowly. His pain is managed, and he is fed and comfortable. We will be trying our hardest to fundraise and give him the best chance possible, but we definitely need help to do so. As we look back at 2023 and move into 2024, we don’t have any wise words or mind blowing statements. We can’t boast big numbers but we can promise you that there was a lot of love. We were not the only ones, we were not the best at anything. We merely muddled along as best as we knew how, made a lot of mistakes and learned a lot on the way. We are so grateful for the lives we could save and thankful to have had the opportunity to love the ones we lost. We are grateful to you our community who keep us going, to you who donate and support us - you make all the difference and we are nothing without you.
