All 5 of Nala’s puppies will be off on their new adventures starting tomorrow! Everybody always asks how we can do it. How we get through that. It’s hard. It always is especially because we always have our favorite puppies but the truth is at 8 weeks these guys need more space and experiences. They are ready for the next step in their socialization journey. It is especially important for Bernese to have purposeful and appropriate socialization as puppies. More on that in a future post but for now we are in a bitter sweet headspace. Bernese just have the sweetest disposition. With all of our stud dogs (who all live in guardian homes with families and most with other dogs), you’d never know they were intact unless you looked. Bernese Puppies coming!
Oh my word! We are going to be busy!! Emma x Norman puppies coming! First litter for both parents! 🥳🥳 We will be looking for guardian homes for some of their baby girls!
It’s that time! 4 weeks marks the big move from our living room to our puppy room! The weaning process has begun, they have a distinct potty vs play space, they are eating softened kibble and have full access to water, new toys and obstacles will be introduced on a scheduled basis. Life is good here ♥️All of their basic needs as well as developmental needs are being met.
To us, there is no other way. There are no other options for our program. We don’t have a kennel setting for our mamas and our papas (and never will). All of our dogs either coexist in our home or live in guardian homes. I just can’t imagine any other way to grow a program!Yes, they are all crate trained because that’s a skill I believe in for so so many reasons but the majority of the time is spent chilling in our kitchen or playing in our yard. There’s never a dull moment but that’s the way we like it. So, as a puppy buyer, how important is that to you? When city boy meets country girl
What happens when our big city HUNK meets our sweet country lady? MAGIC!
A little background on these two. Let’s start with Major. We imported Major’s mom from Russia and his dad from the Czech Republic. Obviously, it was a wonderful pairing producing this superstar. He’s super confident, outgoing and basically down right arrogant 🤣🤷🏼♀️. He knows he’s a looker and enjoys the deserved attention from everyone. Major lives with a fun family, his Bernese brother Torben (future stud for us also) golden retriever brother Ruger and the newest addition, his human baby. He’s never far from his tiny human brother. He takes his self appointed babysitting duties very seriously.
Next is our sweetest Ivy. We imported her mom from Poland and her dad from the Czech Republic. Ivy lives with my aunt who’s passionate about dressing up her three dogs for whatever season it is. Ivy is more of an introvert rather than a crowd junky but she’s a lover. Ivy is an easy girl to love because she returns that love to her people if you are one of her chosen ones.
So we are going to be greedy 🤣. We are planning to keep a boy along with a girl or two back for our program. Depending on how many she has, her litter might be filled by our waitlist but we will know more as her pregnancy progresses!
Another fun fact! She’s due on my birthday!!!! Happy birthday to me!!!! 🤣🥳🫶🏻🤗

Some friends stopped over the other day. They got to see and feel what a Bernese is all about. The high human focused, calm, loving nature of a Bernese. The desire to just be near you and make you happy. This is how this boy will always look into your soul. This is where it all began. Our older Bernese and our youngest son. They have always had and continue to have the most unbelievable bond. She’s getting up there in years and the bond is only getting stronger. I’m not looking forward to the dreaded day… we have never had go through that with our children so any advice would be great appreciated. She’s still in great shape and going strong but Berneses aren’t known for their longevity 😩.

We do get this questions fairly often. When I answer these types of questions I always start with the same word: GENERALLY Generally is so important! We can talk about the breed as a whole but there are always exceptions. A lot has to do with the innate makeup of a breed but a lot has to do with the early formative months of an individual puppy. Now, to answer the question at hand, GENERALLY Bernese are great with cats. Usually, they have a pretty low prey drive and are a kind and gentle breed with other animals. I say that but I’ve also watched one of our girl end one of our chickens in 4.5 seconds illustrating my point. Generally they are low prey drive. Not always. The best thing to do is remember that the each animal relationship is unique. There are things you can do to set them up for success in the first few interactions. 1. Keep the first few meeting short and sweet 2. Keep the puppy on a leash (on the ground, not in your arms) and let the cat freely come and go. 3. It’s our job as pet parents to mediate these meeting and allow space for each animal. We never want either one to feel cornered. 4. Remember, this is a transition time. Transitions can be very stressful so recognizing that they can be taxing on the front end but rewarding on the back end is important. Major demonstrates so beautifully that Bernese are able to be the best scratching posts know to catkind!
