The FINAL Takeaways! From our global Doberman population genetics study:
*Bad news: On average, Dobermans have high levels of inbreeding, and one subgroup (Euro working lines) is suffering significant inbreeding depression resulting in lower lifespans
*Good news: The different lines are in**ed along different regions. So, in fact, out of the whole Doberman genome, less than 0.05% is fixed! AND pups from crossed lines (i.e. American-European) show improved lifespans
*Bad news: There are 4 genomic regions that appear to be fixed in >90% of Dobermans. In fact, American show, Euro show, and Euro working lines all share the same fixation at these regions.
*Interestingly/worryingly, these regions contain heart-related genes. Could this explain the morbidly high rates of Doberman DCM, even in crossed-line dogs? Unclear! Need future research...
*What about dogs with rare variants? It's unclear if those rare variants are rare because they were harmful and selected against, or it's possible they are rare but "safe" & breeding them could reintroduce variation. Proceed with caution!
*FINALLY: Some of the constraints with Dobermans are biological = we can only increase what already exists. In some regions (Chromosome 2), we have very little variation left. BUT much of the constraints with Dobermans are man-made, such as registry or geographic restrictions. So, now that you have the knowledge, how will you help the breed??

Dog News regrets to inform the fancy of the death of internationally respected judge Geir Flyckt-Pedersen.

A world-famous Wire Fox Terrier breeder with more than 100 Louline champions to his credit, Geir adjudicated at every major show on the world stage, from Crufts to Westminster to Montgomery. A Norwegian native and undisputed Terrier authority, he bred a multitude of champions with his late wife Gerd across several other breeds, including English Cockers, Greyhounds, Whippets and Norfolk Terriers.

After leaving their previous homes in Sweden and England, Geir and Gerd made the United States their permanent home.

Geir's always sage, frequently sardonic "Re-Flyctkt-ions" essays were one of most popular and anticipated columns in Dog News.

Geir leaves behind his son Eric, daughter-in-law Rebecca, granddaughters Anna and Emily, and a stepdaughter in Sweden.

Along with the entire fancy, Dog News mourns his loss — not only in the center of the ring and in the pages of this magazine, but also in our hearts, as a dear, long-time friend.
