We practiced recall off the long line to test his response time in an enclosed environment. I’d like his response time to be a lot quicker but he’s definitely made huge progress. He’s currently a teenager so I’m calling this a win. Practice makes progress.
Come along for a bit of my morning training session
Our training space is finally up and running and we are thrilled to host Day Trains. It’s nice to be able to operate out of our home to help teach in-home manners and address behavioural issues.
There is also a nice sized space for obedience training and a separate kennel room. We will be adding some mirrors for fine tuning competitive obedience and eventually removing the carpet.
Hope to see you soon!
Icon hopped back on the Slatmill today (well I lifted him) but he did hop up twice on his own earlier.
In this video, which is sped up, I’m teaching him that he controls the slatmill speed. If he doesn’t want to move he can stand still or sit. I’m watching his body language to make sure he isn’t stressed and adding commands to have him start and stop. At this point I also control the speed with my legs and hand to slow the slatmill so he doesn’t go too fast.
It doesn’t take long for them to love it. Icon was powering it on his own by the end of this session. The entire session was 4 minutes and now he’s tired.
Icon’s 1st Slatmill Session
Icon had his intro to the slatmill. He did great and preferred food reward but I’m sure that will change.
I like to introduce the mill slowly to make sure the dog is comfortable and happy.
I did need to adjust the slatmill a bit to accommodate his size but that’s what I love about this mill, it fits most sizes of dogs.
Icon will be running in no time and we can get him exercised even in the heat wave.
Early morning recall with Icon. I’m delaying marking the behaviour because he likes to bolt right after he sits. Teenagers are fun. 🙄

Morning Recall
Morning Recall with Icon. 🌞🦇🖤
Just over 2 weeks, that’s how long I’ve had this guy. And here he is getting his first title in Barn Hunt. I am very impressed with how quickly he picks things up. He’s had 3 practices and showed zero interest at the first 2. So I thought I’d just bring him to trial to give him some experience. Well Icon showed up and proved he’s here to compete. Special thanks to @fraservalleyratters and all my ratter friends for your support.

Icon had a blast at his first Barn Hunt Trial this morning. Proud of the little guy for figuring out the sport. He was also a social butterfly with all the people. 🦇🖤
@monarchyk9
Love the dog first, the sport second. Icon is just learning the game of Barn Hunt and hasn’t taken to it as quickly as my other dogs did. I’ve had to adjust by using his incredible food drive to teach him. He’s doing really well considering I’ve only had him just over a week and we are still learning to work as a team. 🖤🦇
Let’s talk about introducing a new dog or puppy… Normally I allow the dogs to dictate how fast or slow I take introductions.
In our case, I started with a distance walk in a neutral environment, where the dogs can smell each other from a distance. Aria and Icon were both really great so we went home and crated them. We would rotate one out at a time so they could observe eachother.
Now this is why I strongly recommend having a professional help you out, as a dog trainer I am pretty proficient in reading canine body language so I knew I was able to proceed to having them out on separate beds. I kept Icon on leash for a bit first and they did well.
Sometimes these steps can take weeks or even months but it’s so essential to having a great pack dynamic. Icon is never left unattended with Aria even though I trust her to give a fair correction, teaching Icon is our job not hers.
Here they are today. Icon is very unsure what’s so exciting about the pool.
I don’t post a lot of videos as I like to just focus on training but Icon presents a unique opportunity to go on some of the training journey with me. These will be raw, unedited videos so you can also see the mistakes and not just the end product.
We worked on some door manners today, so I thought I would share. I use treats most of the time but sometimes you just don’t need them. I use the same technique when leaving the house.

Day Trains Coming Soon!
Starting July we will be offering in home Day Training.
I definitely love the slatmill when the weather doesn’t cooperate. Ammo enjoys it as well.
Guardian K9’s Ammo rocked his Master Runs today at the Barn Hunt trial. Back at it tomorrow. If you haven’t tried Barn Hunt, I highly recommend it.
Have you ever wondered what a Walk & Train looks like? Well here’s a snippet from a recent one I did with a 4 month old pup working on puppy basic obedience. This was our first Walk & Train. I try to take a bit of video for my clients so they can see what we worked on.
Just cleaning some heeling up while waiting for our turn to dabble in Agility. #keeplearning #dogtraining #rewardtoy
Tamara and Ammo are at a Barn Hunt trial this weekend. Here is Ammo working hard in one of his Master runs. Master level requires a tunnel with a minimum of two turns, a climb and 1-5 rats hidden. The handler doesn’t know how many rats and is required to call clear when they think the dog has found all the rats. If you think your dog would have fun in this sport check out Fraser Valley Ratters for classes. #dogtrainer #happydogshappylife #balanceddogtraining #dogtraining #obedience #barnhuntlife #workingdog
I get frisked every time I come home smelling of other dogs.
We are at Barn Hunt Trial this weekend and Guardian K9’s Ammo rocked his first ever run in Masters.
For those that don’t know the sport, Master level requires the dog to find 1-5 rats, a tunnel and climb. The number of rats is unknown so you have to call it when you think it’s clear of rats.
