Tonight's the night to bring your horses inside, barn/stall/run-in.

Being a northerner by birth I'm always the last one to bring in animals for cold weather, but on a night like tonight where it's warm and raining, and then dropping below freezing within a matter of hours, it's important to have your animals dry before the temperatures plunge. A healthy animal has no problem regulating body temperature (even down to single digits), with a dry coat, but not wet.

🛑Alert! Check your livestock feed for a recent recall - especially TN horse owners.

ADM Animal Nutrition has voluntarily recalled multiple brand names of their chicken feed, swine feed, cattle feed, and horse feed.

Horse feed Seniorglo 50-lb. bags - Lot 505426QN - were specifically sold in Tennessee. This product may contain increased levels of calcium, which could cause weight loss and the animal to become weak and listless. This product was distributed between Jan. 24, 2024, and Feb. 1, 2024.

It began with a customer complaint related to swine refusing to eat feed. ADM investigated and discovered that the company’s facility in Illinois had experienced an equipment failure that impacted ingredient distribution. Specific lots could contain harmful levels of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium sodium, and/or chloride.

I’m not against shoes, sometimes they can serve a purpose. Like doing mounted patrol 20 hours a week on asphalt. Or cleated shoes for a draft logging operation. But if there isn’t a reason shoes are necessary, it’s always better to go barefoot.

Long hooves can pack mud, weakening the sole of the foot and causing issues such as thrush and white line disease. As well as increasing chances of abscess and cracking in the year to come.
