With the support of volunteers and donors, we operate a no-kill dog shelter in Piñones. Amigos de los Animales is the voice for the abused, neglected and suffering animals that cannot speak for themselves. [email protected]
This morning, we arrived at the shelter and were greeted by this little guy. We’re hesitant to jump to the conclusion that he was abandoned. Our hope is to find out if he has an owner out there, possibly dropped off by a tourist or a local. He’s incredibly sweet and playful, and notably, he’s wearing a collar.

Dear Jackson.
I still remember the day the independent rescuer who found you as a little one reached out, asking if I could help with some puppies. I agreed and asked for pictures of all the puppies she was caring for. Among all the adorable pictures, yours stood out to me. Your photo by the fence, wearing a blue collar, touched my heart. I couldn't stop thinking about you and felt there was something special.
Days later, I went to pick up the two litters of puppies I had agreed to help with. I asked about you, only to learn you were supposed to be adopted. Driving down to Ponce, I arrived to see the lady with you, looking disappointed, walking you back on your leash. She tied you up inside a van and began handing me the puppies. I wondered what went wrong and asked her. She explained the interested person didn't like your long legs and decided against adopting you. She reassured me she'd keep looking for a home for you, as you had never had one.
As I started drive away, I caught your reflection in my rearview mirror and knew leaving you behind would be my biggest regret. I immediately returned and shouted I would take you. The lady was surprised but tearfully said I wouldn't regret it, praising how amazing and perfect you would be as a family dog. We secured you in my car and headed back to the shelter.
On our drive back, a rock hit my windshield, creating a crack. We exchanged confused glances but kept driving. Arriving at the shelter, you seemed the happiest despite it being a shelter, which made me sad knowing you had never experienced a real home.
Months later, after an accident that led us to the emergency room and my car air conditioner breakdown and us dying of heat, as we sat there we received an adoption application for you. Stephen and Kat were understanding about your injury and were willing to wait. They couldn’t stop thinking about you after the dog walk and I made sure we got you healed asap! Through numerous specialist appointments and a few mishaps along the way, including you escaping and having an accident in the lobby, and a cop pulling me over for having my Marbete expire for one day, we finally got the green light you were on your way to NY!
Finally, we were ready to send you to your new home. Despite a last-minute hiccup at the airport when you peed on the scale, we managed to get you on your way. My journey with Jackson might seem filled with misfortune, but it made me a stronger person. Jackson you taught me never to give up, and your faith in me made me feel invincible
Thank you, Jackson, for everything. I'm overjoyed you're with the quirkiest parents, exactly where you belong. I love you with all my heart. Happy Birthday my little chihuahua mix

One puppy departs as four more arrive. These tiny ones were found scavenging for food in Loiza, resorting to eating trash. Had Coco not been placed in foster care, we wouldn’t have had the space to take these newcomers in. They are malnourished and have skin problems. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Leo and Shawn, visitors from Delaware, who brought them to us this morning. A special shout-out to for this connection.

Leena, the endearing squish-faced girl formerly known as Serena, is thriving in her foster home. She’s enjoyed camping trips with her foster sibling Chloe and is sociable, displaying a gentle demeanor around children.
Her foster mom notes that Leena spends her days in a relaxed state, contentedly snoozing on her bed. She has a sweet nature and a hearty appetite, yet she’s low-maintenance.
Previously, Leena suffered from severe malnutrition, leading to gastrointestinal issues, but she’s now on a special diet and is steadily gaining weight. If you’re considering welcoming Leena into your life, we can arrange for you to meet her and her foster caregiver.

Lolo💕 Our sweet 14-year-old English Springer Spaniel, found himself in need of a new home at the age of 13. He has been with us since August 2022. Despite his age, he's a gentle companion who enjoys short walks and the occasional swim. Lolo has a playful spirit but tires easily, so a patient household that appreciates his slower pace would be ideal for this lovable senior pup. We wanted to provide an update on Ferris. After consulting with an orthopedic specialist and conducting an X-ray, the vet has chosen a noninvasive approach to help Ferris regain his ability to walk. Currently, he is undergoing physical therapy three times a day, taking medication, using a Tens machine, and utilizing an assisted loop. Although his road to recovery will be lengthy, we have always believed that he would walk again one day. Unfortunately, due to the severity of his back damage, using a wheelchair is not an option as it would cause more pressure on his spine and hips. Throughout this process, Ferris has remained a happy boy, despite living with his back damage for many years. Last night, he achieved his longest duration of standing up, which is a positive sign of progress. Here’s an exciting update on our handsome boy Ferris Wheeler! We apologize for the delay, but we’ve prepared a video to explain his current state. As we left the beach, we noticed a small dog by the side of the road. Our immediate instinct was to assist. We quickly got out of the car and approached the dog cautiously. The dog attempted to run away, but something seemed amiss. It appeared that the dog's back legs were missing. It was clear that he was in need of help. We decided to follow him and soon realized that he still had his back legs, but he was dragging them behind him. It was evident that he had been injured, likely by a car. After chasing him for a while, he eventually gave up and allowed us to approach him closely. We secured him with a leash, quickly wrapped him in towels, and immediately brought him to the Emergency Vet. He is currently receiving medical attention, and we await the outcome. This case is expected to have significant costs, but our determination to help him remains. As we approach the end of the year with limited funds, we find ourselves unable to assist other dogs without financial support. On our way back to the shelter we took a detour. Adri was discussing how Playa Vacia Talega is a dumping ground for dogs. And lo and behold there was this guy on the side of the road. We could tell he is very playful but didn't want to come too close. After several attempts, we managed to catch him. He is now with us and starting his vetting process. Meet Luna! Luna was found at a local park by a couple. They brought her home and moments later she was unresponsive. They brought her to us wondering what we could do for her. We immediately knew we needed to take her to the Emergency Clinic. She was diagnosed with Botulism caused by eating a dead carcass or contaminated meat. This caused her to be completely paralyzed. Luna spend several weeks at the vet clinic being monitored and making a recovery. She is now back with us and needing physical therapy several times a day! Amigos de los Animales (ADLA) is one of the oldest animal rescues in Puerto Rico and has acted as the voice for the abused, neglected and suffering since 2005. We rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home stray, abandoned and abused dogs in Puerto Rico, as well as educate our communities on the proper and humane treatment of all animals.
ADLA operates a dog shelter located in the Piñones area of Loiza—one of the poorest municipalities in Puerto Rico with a poverty rate of over 50%; and known as a famous dumping ground for unwanted pets. Since its incorporation in 2005, ADLA has rescued approximately 3,300 dogs, and the Shelter (on average) houses between 55 and 75 dogs at a time. ADLA adopts its rescues within the island, or ships dogs to adopters or recipient no-kill shelters on the mainland United States.
The future for animals (including the dogs in Puerto Rico, known as “satos”) lies with the generations to come. We are committed to educating at the grade school level and either visit schools, or receive groups at the Shelter, for conferences or general discussions on animal welfare and the importance of showing animals compassion and respect. We also emphasize the need to provide proper care for companion animals.
ADLA coordinates Puerto Rico's only six-day Animal Control Officer-Cruelty Investigator certification course alongside Puerto Rico’s Department of Health and the Career Development Institute. We have coordinated eight (8) courses thus far and produced 298 investigators.
On Saturday mornings, ADLA organizes a volunteer-cleanup of the Shelter. Volunteers work from 9:30am to 12pm cleaning dog kennels and the grounds of the Shelter. We welcome all new volunteers; many have taken to our dogs so well they decided to adopt!
