ABOUT US

Benlu is a SA-based initiative that was created to empower underprivileged people in our community and make our customers’ fur babies feel like absolute royalty!

We run shelter initiatives where we donate collars to shelters in need. We care about animal shelters, and we know that they need every bit of help they can get! That is why we love to collaborate and get involved with these incredible organisations.

A simple collar gives several members of the Benlu Team an extra bit of income, a sense of pride, and most of all, a new purpose. Our lovely staff take pride in each handmade collar. They are always happy to see their work displayed by beautiful dogs. The materials for our collars are locally sourced and made by real people! Handstitched and designed to your specifications.

What makes us different?

We incorporate African Shweshwe material into our designs because we realised there were not many collars available that embody our diverse and remarkable cultures. We use pleather instead of leather, as it is soft on a dog’s skin and can be cleaned in the washing machine when it gets dirty. We believe in creating collars that complement your dogs’ diverse shapes, sizes, and personalities.

THE STORY BEHIND BENLU

My dogs are my everything. They represent the best parts of my life. They have become my reason to do better. I work harder so they can have the garden and the lifestyle that they deserve.

My dogs are called Ben-Ben and Lulu. Benlu became the combined nickname I used for them when we went out to do things together as a team. Us three against the world!

But more than that, I wanted to extend my love of dogs to other dogs. I wanted to create a product that is both functional and beautiful, and to grow my Benlu family. I also love being South African and I adore the colours and diversity of our country.

Josephina Mokoena is my other mother and a founder member of the Benlu family. With her sewing skills and knowledge, I realised that we could make a difference. She wants to uplift her community, and I want to uplift dogs. Together, we are working to empower our communities in the ways that we know we can.
