New deadly policies @laanimalservices from GM Staycee Dains. Her answer to the problem at our shelters is to KILL. Kill faster. Kill more. Kill until she clears the shelters. But guess what Staycee - you can’t kill your way out of this. With 50 animals being dumped a day when will you and the city wake up to how to fix the problem. Spay and neuter. On our 2nd day in Pinar Del Rio we hosted a spay and neuter event with our local vet friends @felixgigatodelanuez @rossy_kitty19 and Dr Yosbany. 🇨🇺 Students from a vet school also joined to observe and assist Dr Jessica @chevellemybelle 🐾🙌🏼 Two of our team members @muttmatchmaker and @jennsavespaws had food poisoning and couldn’t join us 😢 But the day was a success overall with 33 dogs and cats being sterilized 💯✅ On the way back to the #airbnb Dr Jessica noticed a stray dog limping on the street, injured and suffering. She gave him some food and asked Dr Felix if he would take the pup to his clinic for a possible amputation. First thing in the morning, as we were leaving for the airport @felixgigatodelanuez took the pup home. A couple of hours later we got a call that Dr Felix, the dog wouldn’t need surgery because he and his family had fallen in love and were going to adopt the pup. Pinar Del Rio is a city about 2 1/2 hours outside of Havana. It’s where our vet friends Dr Yosbany, Dr Felix, and vet student @rossy_kitty19 live 🇨🇺 They brought us to see how massive the need for help was and to meet a few local rescuers. Our first stop was to an incredible woman named Diolys who runs a rescue out of her home. We delivered tons of dog food and much needed medication to support her work. Several of the animals were super underweight because she was only able to feed mostly rice to them. So, the kibble we brought should make a huge difference. 🙌🏼 Then we headed out to the countryside to visit another rescuer whose home was destroyed after the hurricane. 😢 The struggle in Cuba is real. And complicated. Day 5 in Cuba 🇨🇺- we packed our bags and headed to the city of Pinar Del Rio. We said goodbye to Dr Kimberley @k3macd and to our furry friends in Havana. The drive was anything but boring. No AC. Potholes galore. Pulled over by the cops. Stopped at checkpoints. Then made a pit stop for gas where we met several starving dogs. Starved for food and love. 😢🐾 @jennsavespaws didn’t waste anytime after she spotted a man selling Cuban sandwiches and bought him out so we could feed the dogs. It was the most heartbreaking part of the trip so far. Because we couldn’t rescue them. Having to leave them there is soul crushing and still haunts us weeks later. 💔 There is so much suffering in the world. We try to do our tiny part. On our 3rd day in Havana we spent the morning walking the neighborhood, helping the animals we met. The Cuban people were so happy to see us and welcomed us into their homes. 🇨🇺💗 Then we loaded up the Taxi with medical supplies and food to deliver to a local rescuer named Elizabeth @adopcionesxamor who had so many special needs cases it was overwhelming. Elizabeth is also studying to be a vet so she was excited to meet our veterinarians @chevellemybelle and @k3macd 🫶🏽🐾 In the video you will see Felipa the dog with severe mange, Chucho with the broken leg, a swimmer puppy and Misu the kitty who is incontinent from kids swinging her by her tail and damaging her nerves permanently 😢 But to help with her quality of life we decided to amputate Misu’s tail and immediately took her back to our #Airbnb to do surgery. Our vets did not have all the necessary tools and had to improvise. White Boy Rick and Brownie are Skid Row survivors. They lived the first 2 months of their life on the streets without an owner. We thought for sure by now they would have found their forever family but unfortunately no applications have been a fit for these two special pups. They are perfect in every way. Sleep through the night. Crate trained. Love people, kids, other dogs and cats! They deserve to have a long and healthy life and can be adopted out separately but only if there is another playful dog in the home. Ideally, we’d like to see them stay together because they rely on each other and two is always better than one. We landed in Havana with 2 American Veterinarians, 4 American volunteers, and 18 bags full of supplies and medications. 🇨🇺 At our #airbnb we met up with the rest of our team, 3 Cuban Vets, 2 volunteer translators and 2 volunteer photographers. We quickly got to work sorting through the suitcases in preparation for our Wellness Clinic with our partner @ceda_cuba 🫶🏽and @los_vet_sin_nombre The next morning we set up again at @lmc_proyecto to do wellness exams and provide flea and tick treatment and dewormer. While the government gave rabies vaccines. The people were lined up before we even arrived at 9am. Excited for us to treat their animals, many of them still wearing our collars and leashes from last year. Our vets were impressed with how well the Cuban people manage to care for their pets even with no resources. 💗💗 286 rabies vaccines given 400+ flea and tick meds given 400+ were dewormed 300+ collars and leashes given out 200+ nail trims done We didn’t leave until every last animal was seen and treated. 👊🏼 Next year we have to bring more collars, harnesses and leashes because we ran out and had to turn people away! But other than that the day was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who donated and supported our team. At our Vet Wellness Clinic on Skid Row 2 weeks ago with our partner @startswithonetoday we met this sweet boy. Covered with thick mats that were flea infested and smelled of feces. He was definitely suffering in silence from the pain. We knew we had to help him. His dad welcomed our offer of sending a groomer and today the stars aligned and @miquaelthegroomer made magic happen. It didn’t take much to make one dog’s life better. A little love does go a long way. We hope to inspire YOU to do one thing each day to make an animal or a human’s life better.
