Introducing Sweet Pea: 3 year old grade mare, 14hh.

“Fancy” Broke, althletic, smart, quiet, uncomplicated. Very versatile, a jack of all trades. Great demeanour, shes a barn favourite. Absolutely no spook, buck, bolt or rear. Done gymkanas, worked on cows, reining patterns, been out of trails, done obstacles, started liberty, super cute jump. She will do it all, weather you want to give her one job or 10, she’s got it.

Sundays are best spent working with the horses!

Welcomed a new face today, her name is Honey Bee. Was rescued a year ago as a 5 year old. Has minimal handling but seems to like me so I have a feeling that she will make great progress.

After many people coming to ride Dude last week he hasn’t been feeling like himself. Trying new training techniques to get him more comfortable with people working with him that aren’t me. Today we had a easy ride as I didn’t want to push him after the challenges that he’s faced the past week.

Goldie has many problems undersaddle as there are holes in her groundwork. Before I start to ride her I am giving her a few sessions to learn proper lunging, round penning, and ground driving. These are fundamentals that all horses should know before being started. It gets them connected to their rider through some liberty practices, while they work on moving up and down their gates balanced and rhythmically.

Sweet Pea is now coming back into work so stayed tuned for her progress.

2015 grade gelding, Dude is 15.2hh and built like a tank. Has his own motor and a great work ethic. Comes from Hancock lines. Big mover. Walk, trot, lope. Soft in head and neck. Moves off leg, side passes, moves shoulder and hinds. Can turn on haunch and forehand. Natural lead changes. No buck, bolt or rear. Exposed to tons of obstacles and desensitizing, knows a bit of liberty when lunging. Easy and sensible guy. Needs an experienced rider as he is sensitive and can be “reactive” if the rider is nervous and doesn’t know what they are doing. Will continued to be worked until sold to help him overcome this. He is good inside or outside, rain or shine.

He’s athletic and eager to please. Wants to be a good boy.

Goes western, english, ba****ck. Don’t be fooled by the english saddle, in no way do I think you will be able to get him off the ground, my western saddle just doesn’t fit him properly. Super respectful on ground. Gets along with all horses. Good to tie, trim, load, good to catch. Up to date with feet, teeth and wormer.

Would make a great breakaway, heading, ranch or trail project.

Ready for a few weeks with this cute thing! She has some attitude problems that we are working on.

All of Goldies problems with riding starts from the problems she has on the ground. If a horse isn’t respectful on the ground then they won’t be when you ride them. Goldie refuses to let you touch her ears, she throws her head and has a major tantrum, usually making it impossible for her owners to even get the bridle on. When I was working with her ears I didn’t let up until she stopped flailing, decided to tolerate it, and relaxed. This way she will learn that the fastest way to “make it stop” is by giving in. She simply doesn’t like being touched. I might not be able to train her to love touch, but I can teach her to tolerate it. However, by the end of our session she didn’t want to admit that she liked it a little bit.

Putting a few rides on this one. Before I even get on a new horse I like to take a session to see how they react on the ground. Looking for how far along in training they are in order to better judge how I want to go about with working with them. Every horse is different, it’s my job to be able to make any small adjustments to my training methods to find something that works for that horse. Radar is a smart guy and caught on pretty quickly!
