Our Story

K9 Direction trains service and therapy dogs for people in the Memphis, TN area. We raise funds and contribute those toward the expenses of raising and training service and therapy dogs.

Our training is 100% bond-based, trust centered training that’s based on the very latest scientific knowledge about canine cognition. We don’t use ANY aversive or abusive tools or methods. All of our dogs are treated with utmost respect, and we expect that same attitude from our dog recipients.

One key goal for our future is to learn how to select and train dogs from shelters for service/therapy work. Right now we’re just starting out, so the selection of our dogs doesn’t really have an impact on shelter dogs one way or another. But as we grow, we hope to be a significant pipeline for dogs to get out of shelters and into happy, productive lives as service dogs. Service and therapy dogs have very strict requirements in terms of temperament and training, so our organization will have to learn how to identify shelter dogs who will be able to meet all the requirements, AND who will very likely enjoy life as a service or therapy dog. This job isn’t for all dogs and we certainly don’t want to put dogs into situations where they’ll be unhappy or frustrated.
