Walk and Talk : WHAT IS TRAINING CULTURE :
Well it looks little different for every dog and team depending on scope of need. In a nutshell - you need to understand the dog, respect the dog, motivate the dog, lead the dog…and appropriately let the dog’s freak flag fly. 🤪#runyourpack #dogtrainingmissoula
Oaken I learning ‘find this’. I present a key odor in the jar (birch oil) and he then needs to hunt to find that odor in one of the tubes. Ultimate goal down the road : I can present ANY odor in the jar and he hunts for that odor with heart and soul ❤️ 🐕💪#nepopo®️ #workyourpack #runyourpack #detectiondog
TRACKING MAJOR WATER CROSSINGS
Fun tracking drills last night in the Clark Fork River with Liesel Weapon. Basically I wanted to rep some tracks that traveled across large waterways. A dog cannot literally track across that much water but Liesel definitely has a pattern of working the odor picture when the POI actually crosses the river and I wanted to study how she works that challenge more.
I just let her do her thing...she takes her time at each obstacle...gives off a definitive pattern of working the scent then we both jump into river, cross and pick the track back up on the other side.
Took her about an hour to work this problem. There were 4 major swims and she never quit hunting. She's 7 now and I continue to learn about/ be amazed at her stamina, grit and passion for tracking.
Session today with a neat moment captured. Had plans to proof perch command but noticed he was cueing off my head turning assuming that meant walk backwards. This is carryover from last night’s session where he did some fun walking backwards games. When I gave no instruction and was not looking at perch he offered another behavior. Honestly, I love it when dogs do this. Eager student on the hunt. I use the moment to proof that head position may not have anything to do with expectation - I purposely give perch cue with head turned…in one rep he THEN assumed maybe head turned May mean perch (at least in this session). Folks this is why drivey dogs like mals and dutchies are fun to work with. Lots of ignition and gasoline…this can ALSO be why many people should not own the breed. They are hyper aware of patterns that yield their advantage: for better or worse. When working these dogs you MUST have a clear and consistent training system paired with awareness on just how subtle your patterns may be helping…or hindering your dogs confidence and clarity…#nepopo®️ #oakenthedutch #runyourpack #workyourpack #dutchshepherd #malinois
No rain delays. Gearing up for trial season. Some sessions are precise working on specific challenges…sometimes we just jam like this and have fun. Love this dog. #oakenthedutch #runyourpack #dogtrainingmissoula #dogtrainingmontana #

Sharing this video with permission from trainer : Meraki K9
This is very cool to see. This dog came to Alexa at Meraki K9 VERY reactive. His triggers are contextual and one of those triggers is actually being pet.
While many pet dogs demand pets from handlers - sometimes in an incessant/demanding way...the dog in this video is being RECONDITIONED to even enjoy being touched.
Alexa is using a treat and train machine off screen as a terminal marker. Every time this dog seeks touch he earns a marker and food. As the session progresses she rewards more and more demanding nature from him to be touched.
This video is at least a couple weeks old and last I heard this same game was used to quickly put the dog in a good emotional state with a new person before they took over and did a session with him.
VERY SMART and creative training - just wanted to share :)
Play As A Primary Reinforcer with Paul Edward
'Play As a Primary Reinforcer' seminar with Paul Edward this past weekend was an ABSOLUTE BLAST!!!
Sure we all love playing with our dogs...but Paul went into the science of different strategies to draw out the most powerful version of your canine companions. Very interesting stuff!
The feedback on this seminar was tremendous. We definitely plan on having Paul back out in the future!
Neat progression to see with a VERY nervous dog - watch with sound!
This is Bonnie. She is a rescue that pretty much lived a street dog/feral existence until being recently adopted. The leash meant nothing to her, strange humans were to be avoided : survival and security were her burden to carry alone. Her (wonderful) new handlers brought Bonnie to RYP to learn some new patterns that would build confidence and help her feel secure in changing environments.
This video features updates we sent to her handler during her time here. Watch her go from super nervous and ready to BOLT to bubbly clear headed and channeled through patient training. The leash became a language she was empowered to control and her commands became her sense of order in chaos. Also notice the whole RYP training team worked Bonnie. It was important for us to generalize patterns as much as possible during her time with us.
We just started these patterns. Her handler watched our online video course while Bonnie was with us. She then did 2 private lessons and took her home yesterday with specific homework to practice. In 3 weeks, this team will come back to RYP to catchup and do another lesson.
Proper dog training is like going to the gym. For long term success you need ignition to get in shape, you need to understand the workouts and you also need to understand how to progress workouts over time to see results. At RYP we patiently layer in new patterns into the dog with an emphasis on investment and ownership of learning languages and training process. Then (most importantly) we transfer the knowledge and patterns to the handler….After leaving our program it is then up to the handler to put in the reps to ‘get in shape’ long term. And we are here as a resource for those teams putting in the work.
SO MANY DOGS suffer from fear/stress/anxiety and think it is their burden to carry alone. This can create controlling behaviors, reactivity and increased cortisol in the body (especially

We like this option for a down especially for when a dog is in public spaces. When a deer surprises your training session… 🦌👀
Didn’t even see the deer until oaken was about 20’ away from him. Been doing lots of call off work recently prepping for competition. LOVE that he not only instantly disengaged from deer and dropped his ball but he came back to me with heart and soul. Bout as close to a reflex response as I could ask for. 🙏

Free shaping touch pad with a 12 week old GSD. Letting the dog hunt for the picture/behavior that yields handler activation…this gets dogs fired up and promotes ownership in behaviors 🔥. Later, this touch pad will be used for body awareness drills, heeling drills and pivots. Dog training = layering steps that develop dynamic behaviors. Only works when the dog is invested in the process too ;) #puppytraining #runyourpack #workyourpack #dogtrainingmissoula #heartandsoul
