The second AML Boot Camp done and dusted!!
To say I’m proud of this crew is an understatement.. these kids have the ability to focus and train like seasoned soldiers!!! I was saying to one of the mums how I love to coach the kids at this stage because ten years goes by in a blink. They change so much from little ten year old girls to fierce twenty year old women. To be a part of their journey, with the opportunity to set them up correctly is a privilege I don’t take for granted.
ALL the kids I coach just show so much grit and when they develop strength of character through this sport there’s not much this life can throw at them they won’t be able to handle.
The improvement from start to finish this weekend was huge!!!! I was determined to push hard and make big steps forwards with my little crew of warriors.
The last lesson is always a struggle but everyone dug deep and nailed it!! Well done Legends, so SO proud of each of you and all the parents. 10/10 to the extraordinarily dedicated parents and thank you for your trust!

Never have I been so happy to bring a horse back into work!! After two years off being what I thought was forever retired my bestest boy Commands is making a comeback!! He’s been babysitting a few bratty youngsters I’ve had in and moving like a champ… rocking his dad bod right now but won’t take the old man too long to get ripped again!! He’s a one in a million with the young horses and as a lead horse… probably the most important member of my team. Plus he is LOVING being back in and number one kid on the block again!!

THIRD…Pivo.. third time lucky? First one I broke.. 2nd one randomly stopped charging… hopefully my third and final one!! Shall try to start getting the video tutorials done you have all been asking me for!!

I still find it quite mind blowing how experienced and sometimes high level competitors lead a horse on short leads while wrestling them and also holding them in the shortest of reins to maintain control.. Tristan has the stats as a competitor to gain the respect of competitive riders to evolve and train a better way..

Another little cutie in to sell. Not quite ready yet as he’s just arrived this week and coming back into work after a few months spelling. Currently 15.1hh but slightly bum high, will eventually make 15.2hh. WB x Arab by Smash Hit. Could really do anything with this fella.. good brain, has behaved in the psycho weather we’ve had… very food motivated 🤣 If you’re a small adult with the time to put into him then you can register an EOI. Finding the right person is priority for his eventual sale.

I hate training in the wind but ever since I was a little kid I found peace in riding in the rain.. PK is a blessing as he seems to enjoy our adventures just as much.. meets me at the gate every day.. turns right out of the tie ups and heads straight for the front gates on the buckle.. even in some steady rain he’s up for the outing! Best free horse I ever did get!! What is your favourite part of training? What gives you peace? What are the moments that reset your soul..?

I did not write this, but everyone needs to see it...
When we rush our horses in their training, we aren't expediting their fitness or building muscles faster - we are breaking them down and rushing to a place that will require more veterinary intervention, more alternative therapies, more time off, more risk of injury, more wear and tear on the fragile structures, and a quicker end to the riding career and soundness of our equine partners.
You cannot rush fitness, you cannot rush collection, suppleness, relaxation, it's impossible. Wherever you do rush and cut corners, you will end up with holes and issues in other areas of your riding and the overall health and welfare of your horse.
Don't want to take the time to teach your horse to collect, and instead just force him into a false frame? Well, you're going to be stuck with fixing the slew of problems that come with the tension that was just created.
Don't want to work your way up the scale to create true endurance and stamina? You now risk your horse pulling a muscle or injuring themselves from overexertion and being pushed too hard for too long when the body simply isn't ready for that workload.
Don't want to get a saddle fitted to your horse? Your horse will suffer the consequences of altering his posture and way of going to alleviate the pressure and pain caused by something that isn't suited to his build, even going so far as risking injury to yourself when he can't pick up his feet enough, causing a stumble which can be catastrophic.
Don't want to do boring small jumps to build up to the larger ones? You risk your horse not being able to find a good take-off spot, knocking rails, refusing and even crashing through the jump. You will also make the horse more nervous, anxious and again, tense and sometimes unwilling to jump again.
Don't want to waste time working up the scale of collection to achieve the proper head set without force? Let's just throw a harsher bit in his mouth, maybe tie the nose shut with both noseband and flash to get him into "frame". You've now lost all relaxation, the wrong muscles are activated and depending on how deep you yank the horses face in will determine if he's even able to swallow. Tension throughout the jaw and neck translate all the way to the hind legs, so zero collection is possible, even the slightest bit of engagement and lift of the back cannot be achieved.
Rushing will lead you nowhere except to more problems that could've been avoided had you taken the proper time for development.

Massive shout out to these legends.. regularly making the trip my property in Macclesfield. Anushka and her trusty nurse Caitlyn have been such important components to unraveling and identifying physical issues associated with pain indicating behaviours. These ladies are kind, passionate, incredibly informative and have a genuine passion towards helping horses. I am SO blessed to have Anushka on my side and available to mine and my clients horses.

Before & Afters
Just a few of the before and afters of horses sent to me for training. Each one is a four week turnaround.
Taking a whole horse approach to ensure the horse is as comfortable as possible to undergo the training programs I design for each horse is what allows these types of results.
Each horse is different, they develop in their own time. If you need help improving your horses strength, fitness and top line you can access some free information and a $15 training program through the Topline link in my page.
Nutrition, correct shoeing or trimming, chiropractic and acupuncture treatments along with tailored programs for each horse is what creates these results. If you’d like a tailored training program please pm me to get started.

Curved Lines of Poles
help to improve and create your horse’s ability to bend through their core.
If we want our horses to stay sound they need to be supple. Training sets of curved lines on opposite bend helps mobilise the horse through their entire body while training them to also use themselves evenly.
Getting off their back or riding in a lighter seat allows the horse to lift their back and open their vertebrae which again helps them become more supple.
Supple horses are flexible horses. Flexible horses who train strength exercises are less prone to injury. #amlequestriancoaching #amlpolespatterns #fithorses #horseriders
Soooo.. this is only “just” touching on recognising why your horse may behave in the way it does. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - horses are incredibly stoic animals who will push through great levels of pain to do what is asked of them. By the time they get to exhibiting behavioural issues they have exceeded their pain threshold and are trying to tell us the just can’t do anymore - Not one single one of us knows everything.. including our experts which is why the good ones collaborate and refer to each other when they’re unsure. If your horse is behaving in an unruly manner there will be a reason. I have ridden and trained over 200 horses now.. I’ve lost count.. and I can honestly say NOT ONE single one was of a bad temperament. Any behavioural issues were either physical or a psychological response to previous poor training. I’m blessed to have long term clients who know I have a “full horse” approach and send me their precious horses to get to the primary cause of any issues. I really want to encourage riders to look deeper.. question more and save the money to get diagnostics done. I’m just a rider with a pretty good feel for problems..I can’t diagnose anything but have an exceptional list of expert connections who gladly work together to get my clients horses on track. I have not been wrong yet in my suspicions of deeper issues requiring diagnostics. Trust your gut people.. if they’re crooked, heavy in the contact, can’t bend one way, trip, struggle to back up, twist their flexion in the opposite way of travel, can’t walk a straight line properly or back up easily.. then find out why!! Those signs can be really subtle too.. so subtle you need a great eye and feel to recognise them.. but let’s be better and do better by our horses!!! I am always happy to help and refer to specialists I trust if you need to pick my brain. 🫶🏻#amlequestriancoaching
This is far easier said than done and you need to think outside the box.. Remember that we are aiming for suppleness, relaxation and confidence in the horse.. if you can achieve that without interfering with the horse’s mouth then the contact you seek will come! It’s hit and miss with PK.. he’s 50% better which is a big step forwards.. but there’s a while to go yet before maintaining 100% relaxation. I hope this helps others to think outside the box for kind and effective ways tackling this way they express anxiety! #amlequestriancoaching
Day off.. we’re not fancy here at AML but we’re safe, functional and everyone is happy.. for me to run smoothly as a one person show I need to be organised.. so every week paddocks are cleaned, gear is washed, feeds are made for the week ahead and everyone remains a happy little herd.. while Creed works hard keeping the rats away! 😝 #amlequestriancoaching
🥳🥳🥳Happy Happy Birthday to all our magnificent equine friends!! Kenzi believes treats should be delivered in bed on birthdays! 😝🥰 #amlequestriancoaching
Feeling blessed about the tribe of incredible clients I have who recognised what their horses needed and sent them to me. Kenzi is 6 years old and to some out there they’d say she needs to be out competing the baby classes by now and prepping to move into the star classes next year.. but I can tell you right now that approach would completely cook this horses brain and she’d be ruined for life! Kenzi’s owners recognised this and how physically and mentally young she still is. So they sent her to me to train trails and get her out to her first few outings. LOTS of brain training, body conditioning (she is like a noodle) and balance work.. it’s all starting to pay off. I’m grateful for kind, wise and responsible owners like Kenzi’s.. the foundations we build with her now will pay off ten fold in the future!! #amlequestriancoaching #horsetraining #performancehorses
As I continue to chip away at my own training, finding better ways to achieve the goals I set for each horse.. I try to pass this on to my tribe. Remember a horse can feel a fly land on them.. they will listen better if we learn how to whisper their language.. yes sometimes it needs to be a bit ugly to be effective or safe but as soon as the question is even slightly understood.. ride light! Especially over poles or jumps.. let their backs move.. train your core.. ride into the bridle!! 👌🤗
AML Yering Poles pattern for the day!! We’re working on suppleness and quality of pace!! Working trot to lengthen trot and back to working! See you soon everyone!! #amlpolesclinics #amlequestriancoaching
It’s not very often my roundyard becomes a wading pool… wowsers we’ve had two months of rain in two days!! However… it’s a great training tool for the horses.. no horse here will ever have an issue going through water!! 🤣 Tomorrow is going to be worse.. 🤪🤪 #amlequestriancoaching #horsetrainer #allweatherrider
Being a full time horse trainer I’m always doing my best to make sure the horses in my care feel safe, comfortable and happy. I do stick to a routine and make sure they all have a friend on at least one side of them. The fact that every single one of them is out there lying down having a snooze makes my heart sing. Both Kenzi and Poet are high energy very alert personalities, so to see them both having a snooze with the rest is very reassuring they feel safe here with me. It makes such a big difference to their training if they’re happy and comfortable in their paddocks. Horse training goes far beyond just training. It’s horse management and having a complete understanding of how each horse behaves 24/7. I don’t keep them stabled or in 12 x 12 yards. They all have a paddock of at least a 1/4 acre and can be safely sociable. There’s so much that goes into horse training… I only really charge for the hour or two a day I spend training each horse but realistically I’m caring for these guys 24/7 & if I’m off coaching a clinic then I have my partner on duty or I pay some very trusted and experienced friends to be on duty. But THIS.. seeing them all so relaxed.. gives me job satisfaction!!! Happy, sleepy, relaxed horses!! 🥰🥰🥰 #amlequestriancoaching #horsetrainer #horsemanship #performancehorses #horsetrainerlife
I do at least one hill session a week with all the horses I have in for training.. in hand or ridden they all get a hill sesh depending on their level of training! Too wet to slop around the arena so today we hit the hills!! #amlequestriancoaching #horsetrainer
🥰 I love how the horses who come in for training always feel safe enough here to lie down and sleep. It’s so important for them to get quality rest and a lot of behavioural issues occur due to sleep deprivation. Pippa and Quincy out for the count making the most of the sun. 🥰🥰#amlequestriancoaching #horsetrainer #horses #happyhorses

The AML Story So Far...
“You can’t stop Amanda! If you stop coaching, if you stop running these classes the knowledge you have doesn’t get passed on!” These were the words of a mother who had loyally attended a Jump Club I ran at Five Star Equestrian Centre every second Thursday for over two years. I had to stop running the Jump Club as I needed to move back to the Yarra Valley. I had created my own Jump Club as I wanted to give the kids a chance at training more complex exercises like accuracy, grids and related lines. All the fundamentals I felt they were not getting taught in pony club or private lessons. I at no stage thought I was anything special (still don’t) I just recognized there was a gap in what the kids were being taught and wanted to fill that gap. I came from a training background saturated in elite level coaches and riders who all rallied together to help each other. It was a tough environment but I really don’t think there has been another establishment in Australia like the NSW Equestrian Centre since it closed down. Jump Club was a little re-creation of what we used to put together at Lochinvar. It was just what I knew that had proven to really improve riders skills. I just wanted to give the kids a hand.
Time went by and as my reputation as a coach grew I was asked to coach at more and more clubs. I was asked to coach “poles lessons’’ to the riders who were too scared to jump. I didn’t want to put them over a line of four boring poles so I thought of different exercises that would get them thinking about what they needed to achieve, that was related to riding a jumping course and take their minds off their fears. The popularity of these “Poles classes” grew to the point I was filling five hours of poles classes at Five Star every Jump Club day before I would change everything around for Jump Club. I ended up coaching ELEVEN hours straight on those days. Riders of all levels and disciplines started booking in, travelling over two hours to attend. I was so surprised but really enjoyed creating the different patterns of poles to challenge the riders. I made sure every fortnight was a different pattern to keep the regulars on their toes.
I started to notice how the poles patterns really highlighted the gaps in riders training. How each rider improved dramatically in their position, balance and connection after just one poles class. The research I had done in relation to sports psychology and muscle memory started to become useful in the way I ran the classes. By keeping everyone moving and completing the patterns in sets of repetitions the method confirmed the improvements in riders skills while providing a true fitness exercise for the horses. With some of my riders calling my poles classes “Crossfit for horses!”
Running a business has been a huge learning curve. SO often I’d forget to get paid, lose cash, put it through the washing machine, find it in a jacket pocket weeks later. I just loved and still love what I do. If I didn’t need to earn money I’d happily coach for free. Lucky for me I have been mentored by some incredibly brilliant self-made business women who basically kicked my butt into creating a proper business. I am so lucky to have the continuous mentoring of one brilliant lady in particular.
However, the business would not have gone anywhere if it was not for the love of what I do and the joy I see in riders when they finally ‘click’ with how the horse is supposed to feel when they first engage from behind. When they become steadier in the contact...or simply manage to hold a straight line, turn a corner or stop when asked! I think the real magic is when a rider’s timing and feel kicks in. “Feel” is a term coined by coaches world wide. Most believe it can not be taught. I disagree. I believe my poles patterns teach a rider “feel” by awakening a subconscious within the rider. By having to approach my patterns in a proactive manner there is no time or room for head noise, over thinking or fear. They HAVE to get their bodies working in order to get their horse through each pattern in the way its designed to be ridden. SO many riders have ‘ah ha” moments, which in turn gives me two things! 1) Job satisfaction AND 2) More knowledge on how to help the next person with the same issue.
Horse riding is a hobby for most riders, it is their escape...their meditation, their reward for all the hard things they do in their life. A long time ago I had a career in the police force. It was a colorful career where I witnessed a lot of death, mental illness and the darkest corners of society. It was a time in my life that gave me a high appreciation of what I’m able to do now. Being able to help riders get closer to achieving their goals and witnessing the sheer happiness they exhibit when they successfully nail an exercise they previously thought to be impossible is something I am truly grateful to be a part of. In 2019 I coached over one thousand riders through my clinics stretching across Victoria. I met so many wonderful people, made some beautiful new friends and have been asked to coach at so many clubs and clinics I could have filled every single weekend for 2020. I simply cannot reach that many people physically.
This is how my written training programs were born. I started offering remote lessons by critiquing videos of riders and writing weekly training programs. Then I got asked for poles training programs, with riders of every level from dead set beginner through to the elite asking me for specific exercises to improve specific issues. The training programs are becoming increasingly popular. I am now developing specific programs on issues I’m most commonly asked to help with. For example, Bringing a horse back into work is one of them. I also have an App in development that should be available late May, early June. I’m trying to make everything as affordable as possible to give my clients as much value for money as I can. Horse riding is not a cheap sport and at the end of the day, I just really want to help as many riders as I can. Please don’t hesitate to shoot me a message if you would like more help within your training regime.
