Eden Animal Haven Eden Animal Haven is a licensed no-kill rescue & sanctuary, providing a safe, cage-free haven for cats, with the goal of adopting them into loving homes.

Eden Animal Haven began in 2010 when Leslie Sawyer and Bill Stoll took up residence on a piece of land owned by a psychologist and his wife who wanted it used for animal welfare. While living in a small house on the property, Leslie and Bill converted a barn without plumbing or electricity into a temporary cat sanctuary. Horse stalls were reinforced and secured with chicken wire and doors; carpete

d ramps were built for the cats to access the large loft; cat trees, walkways, plush beds, and insulated boxes for winter were installed. EAH formed a board and became a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation in December 2013, and received their animal shelter license from the Missouri Department of Agriculture in June 2016. The board has expanded from an initial three to a current size of seven. EAH decided to focus on cats because of a pronounced need in the areas surrounding Springfield, Missouri. Although there are many dog-only rescues and shelters, there were no cat-only shelters in the area at that time. Cats are euthanized at local animal control facilities at much higher rates than are dogs. The need for a cat shelter like EAH is extremely high. Our goal was to construct a state-of-the-art, cage-free cat building on the property, modeled from Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah. We have realized that goal! The new building shelters at least double the number of cats as the original barn--increasing our lifesaving capacity from around 150 to 300-400 cats currently. The building contains medium and large community rooms, as well as small rooms for injured and recovering cats and lactating mothers with kittens. The medium and large community rooms also have new catios attached to allow the cats to go outside and watch the birds and butterflies and be completely safe. A quarantine area will shelter cats with infectious diseases and has its own air filtration system and HVAC. In addition, the original barn building continues to house feral cats, an even more endangered cat population. On Thursday our beloved Googey passed away peacefully home here in the bookstore with his family (human & Squash). Anyone who has visited Bookmarx in the last decade and met Googey knows what a special cat he was. Googey first showed up to a book club a decade ago sneezing blood in the care of a shelter worker who was giving this sick kitten some extra attention for the night and by the end of the discussion of Stephen King’s “It”, we knew we wanted Googey to stay forever.

I dont really have the capacity or words to articulate, right now, how important Googey was to me personally and to my life other than to say everything important and good in my life—my family, the bookstore, my sobriety—would have not existed without Googey. He appeared at a very dark period of my life and helped me maintain enough of the part of myself that I like while I was struggling with addiction and gave me unconditional love when I didn’t deserve it, and stayed with me until I made it to the other side.

And while Googey means so much to me personally, I also know that Googey was and is The People’s Googey (2023 Captain Springfield, 2023 Christmas Parade Grand Marshal!), and that he meant a lot to so many people, and I really struggled with the decision handling Googey’s end of life because I know how many people care about him and would have loved the chance to say goodbye, and know how much everyone meant to Googey, but that it would be easiest on Googey to be free from suffering longer.

Googey passed at home with the help of Peaceful Crossings who came and made the experience kind and humane, and Googey lovingly and peacefully went to rest in his home where he will continue to exist spiritually while Phoebe Bridgers “Funeral” softly played (NOT specifically chosen, it just came on, so that’s God playing DJ looking down on his beautiful servant).

Googey, I’m sorry that in all our years, I never took a photo of you in an angel outfit to post for this occasion, but we love you so much, you brought me more joy than I thought possible, thank you for everything. I hope you enjoyed your time as much as we all enjoyed being with you. I’m so lucky you came into my life.

Also, give Squash some extra love, because for all the Squash The Villain theatrics, while Googey was hospitalized Squash took Googey’s absence hard and on our last night together Squash was incredibly kind to Googey and let him eat first and patiently waited, which I assure you never has happened once in history.

A memorial for Googey is going to be held at the store on Sunday January 19, more information to come on that.

Two of our WORKS Employment participants, Aaliyah Baker and Kayla Kendall, have had the purrrfect opportunity to learn some valuable work skills while volunteering at Eden Animal Haven. And the work is not only rewarding - it's fun!
Eden Animal Haven operates as a 501c Non-Profit and has a mission to provide a safe, cage-free haven for abused, abandoned, and unwanted cats, with the goal of adopting them into loving forever homes; to provide loving care and sanctuary to cats deemed “unadoptable"; to educate the public about pet overpopulation, and the importance of spay/neuter.
They rely upon donations to run the shelter and care for the felines in their facility. We wanted to take a moment to acknowledge our WORKS participants for getting out into the community and commend them for serving with their hearts. Coming up, on April 6th, they will host their annual Rock the Cat's Paw event. In which, they reach out to select businesses for support, inviting them to donate an item or experience for their auction. Proceeds directly benefit the cats in their care with medical expenses, food, and general care. Fundraising also goes towards their TNR operation, to help reduce the cat overpopulation on our community streets.

Kittens are great and all (we were kittens once, too), but we adults have our advantages! We've mastered all the basics and tend to be a little mellower, but still have a playful spirit. Me-WOW! We knew you could do it! During our Giving Tuesday Matching Fundraiser, you donated an amazing total of $7730. In August we received a plea from a member of the public about a small kitten that had been thrown from or hit by a car. We discovered that she had a badly broken leg and was severely underweight. We rushed her to our veterinarian, who was able to save her leg by holding her broken femur together with a pin. She went home to a foster for special care during her recovery. We named her Adira, meaning strong, noble & mighty in Hebrew. In September, her pin was removed and she had gained weight under our foster’s gentle care. She became a happy, playful little kitten, and was adopted soon after! We help as many urgent medical cases like these as we can, but they are expensive and stretch our resources thin. We just spent the past 2 days rescuing 20 cats from an overpopulation situation just north of our shelter. There were a total of about 40 cats and this 20 will come close to us finishing it up. Taking on these situations is very expensive and time consuming and could have been easily prevented with early spay/neuter. PLEASE, if you are feeding any cats, make sure they are fixed, even if they are stray or feral. One female cat can produce up to 24 kittens in one year! And one female and one male and their offspring can produce 420,000 cats over a 7 year period! 😱 SAAF Spay Neuter Clinic, Humane Society of Southwest Missouri, and Rescue One Clinic are great resources for low-cost services. Horse stalls were reinforced and secured with chicken wire and doors; carpeted ramps were built for the cats to access the large loft; cat trees, walkways, plush beds, and insulated boxes for winter were installed. EAH formed a board and became a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation in December 2013, and received their animal shelter license from the Missouri Department of Agriculture in June 2016. The board has expanded from an initial three to a current size of seven members. EAH decided to focus on cats because of a pronounced need in the areas surrounding Springfield, Missouri. Although there are many dog-only rescues and shelters, there are no cat-only shelters in the area. Cats are euthanized at local animal control facilities at much higher rates than are dogs. For example, although from 2005 to 2014 Springfield Animal control reduced its dog euthanization rate from 48% to 12%, its much higher cat euthanization rate of 67% in 2005 declined to only 43% in 2014. In raw numbers, an average of 243 dogs were euthanized over this time span, with 1165 sent to rescues. But 428 cats were euthanized and only 426 sent to rescues. The need for a cat shelter like EAH is clearly pressing. In May 2017, EAH started construction on a state-of-the-art, cage-free cat building, modeled after Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah. The new building will shelter at least double the number of cats as the original barn--increasing our lifesaving capacity from around 150 to up to 300-400 cats annually. The building contains medium and large community rooms, as well as small rooms for cats needing isolation and lactating mothers with kittens. Several of the rooms will offer attached “catios” for the cats to enjoy. A quarantine area will shelter cats with infectious diseases.

We began construction in August 2017, and our building is now complete enough to move our cats in from the barn. We still need funds to complete interior work (flooring, paint, etc.), the exterior catios, and to purchase remaining plumbing fixtures, storage cabinets, and office furniture and equipment.
