SK Dobes - The ultimate companion

The Doberman Pinscher is a old breed, originally developed in Germany as a guardian and companion for the tax collectors of Apolda. The dog is a medium to large animal, with a slick, close-lying coat and alert and attentive personality. Standing high on its feet, the Doberman Pinscher is more square than many breeds, being just slightly longer than tall. The female Doberman should be 24-26” tall, and weigh 40-60 pounds. The male Doberman is taller, 26-28”, and may weigh up to 80 pounds at a healthy weight. This is a good sized dog which may not be best for households with small children. While Doberman Pinschers are often very good with gentle children, it’s difficult for a dog to know its own strength.

Our Dobes are AKC-registered, outgoing and social but protective of their owners. They make fine companions, guardians, and may even be obedience, agility or conformation winners. Primarily, the Doberman Pinscher is a versatile, athletic and intelligent dog. They are ideal for most activities, and love to do anything which allows them to be included in their owner’s activities. Doberman Pinschers do not fare well if left for long periods.

Doberman Pinscher puppies do best if well-socialized and started on crate training. However, puppies are a lot of work! Doberman Pinschers are intelligent dogs which require obedience training and dedicated time from their owners to make the best pets. I highly suggest anyone getting a new puppy consider a puppy kindergarten or basic obedience class at the minimum, both to brush up on dog training skills, and to socialize your dog. In addition, as an athletic and energetic dog, adequate exercise time will give you a better behaved pet.

I have had a Doberman Pinscher in my family for 30 years. I think they make a fabulous pet and companion. I am happy to talk about Doberman Pinschers, and discuss fitting one into your life.
