This training involves first asking your dog to sit when you step up to them (luring is ok here), then slowly replacing the cue “sit” with the final step to them. REWARD. Leash training shouldn’t hurt! Here is how to train your dog without using a chock chain, prong collar or shock collar.
1. Get some HIGH value treats that your dog has never had (save them for leash training only). Use a treat pouch so your hands are free for the leash.
2. In your home, work on getting your dog to walk beside you WITHOUT A LEASH.
3. Once they are doing well move to either your backyard or a large, empty parking lot (church parking lots are great for this).
4. Work on releasing them and then getting them back to you USING YOUR VOICE AND TREATS. Do not use the leash to “reel them in”. The leash should be considered as a tool to keep your dog safe from wandering off – not as a means of dragging them about.
5. Build up to busier places but know that your dog will need time to re-engage in each, new place.
6. Commit to NEVER letting your dog pull you! This can take from one week to one month but, if you stand firm your dog will figure this out.
7. Don’t feel like training? Use a front clip harness that will help reduce pulling and, connect your leash to the back for training (this will make you commit to training!).

Dog Greeting tips: The dogs we choose for our dogs to greet need to be carefully selected (and should be done with a professional present if there is ANY chance your dog may snap, or worse). It's important to understand dog's body language so you can decipher if a greeting should happen, or not.
By the way, if the person on the other end of the leash tells their dog to "be nice", that is a RED flag.

Even if your dog isn’t reactive you can still offer some grace and support to reactive dog parents. Having a reactive dog can be stressful and embarrassing. Please consider this when you come across a dog that is barking and lunging – they are having a hard time and a quick wave or simply moving AWAY can be SO helpful for that person and their dog.

Sometimes really small actions can create big results. When you are with your dog, something as simple as tossing a treat or two away from you and waiting for them to come back is building engagement. This will come in handy when you want to train them to be off leash and it will also help with leash training! I usually say find it before I drop anything for a dog, this is so I don’t encourage foraging, and they know to look out for something good.
Training tip to make life better for your dog! Place your dog on a comfortable surface (a mat, bed or towel) for training sit, down and stay.
Training is a LOT easier for dogs if we keep their physical (and mental) comfort in mind! I’ve learned that teaching sit, down and stay is MUCH better for the dog if I provide a comfortable place to do so. Demanding your dog to lay down on gravel, pavement or otherwise uncomfortable surfaces serves NO purpose in their lives so please consider this before asking them!

Here’s how to Un-Leash train! Archie had the opposite problem of most dogs. Rather than pulling on leash his Mom had a hard time keeping him moving.
Here are some tips I would offer to Archie’s Mom:
1. A FULL Vet check FIRST. This is a MUST. Once cleared…
2. Make walks fun and engaging to help him move along. Do this by using movement, verbal praise and treats.
3. Sniffing is GOOD! Let him sniff and get moving onto the next sniff.
4. Reward for the behavior you want – this can be as simple as verbal praise but treats make it even better.
5. Keep walks shorter but FUN.
6. Motivate your dog and let them know you are happy to move with them.
7. Don’t force exercise on a dog – try to go with their “flow” but, by making it fun we can get a little more out of them and show them that walks can be enjoyable.
