Sending our deepest condolences, Rest In Peace K9 Zar.🐕💙🙏🇺🇸

NEWBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania, beloved K-9 Zar died Tuesday.

Zar was a 5-and-a-half-year-old Belgian Malinois-German Shepherd mix with the Newberry Township Police Department.

Officers said Zar's ability to breathe was obstructed when an object became lodged in his throat during a training exercise at his handler's home.

His handler attempted life-saving measures and rushed him to a veterinary clinic, but Zar couldn't be resuscitated.

After his death, Zar was provided a police es**rt to honor his life and service. It allowed him one final ride past the police department he served.

Zar was with Newberry Township police for four years and was trained in suspect apprehension, narcotics detection, article searches, handler protection and patrol activities. Police said Zar's service protected dozens of officers and removed countless amounts of harmful drugs from the streets of our community.

One of his accomplishments included locating a firearm that was used during an attempted homicide and later discarded from a vehicle into heavy brush in 2021.
