Thank you to those who have completed adoption applications! Please understand that we are a small group of volunteers who manage this rescue organization in addition to our jobs and demands of our everyday lives, so we are often unable to acknowledge receipt of each and every application. Rest assured that we receive them, distribute them internally to our volunteers around the country, and keep them on file. While we may receive several applications from highly qualified owners for any one dog available for adoption, we must carefully review each in terms of where that particular dog’s needs might best be served. Each dog is different, so for each, we consider many factors, including but not limited to other animals and/or young children in the home, outdoor spaces, prior experience, and location. Regarding location, it is often impractical to attempt to transport a dog to a location far from where they are currently located, so that is certainly something we must consider.

Who says an old dog can’t learn new tricks? And who doesn’t think that an adopted senior dog can have fun with new experiences? This is a 10 1/2 year old wire fox terrier- adopted at age 9 after having a life-long history of car sickness. Look at him now!

4 year old Winston, currently located in South Carolina, needs a fox terrier savvy foster home. He is a very sweet and loving boy, but is in need of attention and training. He has never had the opportunity to socialize with other dogs, so his ability to get along with other dogs is currently unknown. This is 13 year old Zeb. You may recall that we took him into care along with his younger brother, Harper, after their owner passed away. Harper has found his forever home, but Zeb needs some fairly expensive medical treatment to address his medical issues before he will be ready for adoption. AFTR will pay these vet expenses, as we do for all of the fox terriers coming into our care needing medical attention. However, as we are a non-profit rescue, we rely on donations to help us pay for these medical and other expenses.
SO, we are asking that our supporters please consider donating to make it possible for us to continue taking care of our beloved fox terriers in need!

Rory’s Journey: A Story of Patience, Faith, and Finding the Perfect Match

Some dogs leave an indelible mark on your heart and your rescue journey. Rory was one of those dogs.
When Rory first came to us, we honestly wondered if we’d be able to find him the right home. His journey was long and challenging, requiring a professional trainer, a dedicated long-term foster, veteranary and behavioral care, and above all—patience. Thanks to your unwavering support—financial, emotional, and spiritual—we were able to give Rory everything he needed.
Eventually, Rory went to what seemed like the perfect home. Despite careful cat testing, the situation with the family’s beloved cat proved too difficult for everyone involved. The family made the excruciating, selfless decision to return Rory to us. They tried so very hard, and we cannot thank them enough for doing what was best for everyone, including Rory.
But as often happens in rescue, fate intervened. A phone call turned into a visit and an overnight and so on.
From the moment they met, Rory seemed to understand he had a job: to care for this wonderful boy.
Rory was able to visit regularly at a childrens hospital and brought joy and comfort to kids and families there and at a Ronald McDonald house.
Mom is a long-distance runner, and Rory took to running alongside her like a natural. The combination of intense exercise and having a meaningful purpose turned out to be the magic solution—one we might never have discovered on our own.
Today, Rory is thriving in his forever home. His family loves him as much as he loves them.
This has been one of our most challenging rescues in all our years of doing this work—and also one of the most rewarding.
We want to thank Rory’s original family for trusting us with their beloved dog. They had small children and faced an impossible situation. It was heartbreaking for them, and though it took longer than any of us hoped, they never stopped having faith that we would find Rory the right home.
If you’re facing the difficult decision to rehome your dog, please know: we understand how heartbreaking this is. Without your generous donations we could not have provided all of the help Rory needed.

We are thrilled to share some wonderful news with our community! Harper, the sweet Smooth Fox Terrier who was one of two rescued from a shelter earlier this month, has found his forever home! ❤️

Meet Harper and Zeb, two beautiful smooth fox terriers whose owner recently passed away. Through no fault of their own, these sweet pups found themselves in a shelter near Tallahassee, Florida, and they need our help.

FINAL UPDATE: Winston has been adopted!

UPDATE: still looking for someone somewhat near Killeen, Tx. to at least foster Winston while we continue to look for an adoptive home. The current owners are asking to have this done ASAP due to their current family circumstances.

Winston is a wonderful 8 year old WFT in Killeen, Texas. Winston is a very good boy, but due to family circumstances, he needs to be rehomed. He has no health problems, is neutered and up to date on all his vaccinations. He is used to being an only dog and must be the only animal in the household – no cats or other dogs, or small children.
Winston loves walks and is great on a leash, but isn’t taken on walks often because, like many WFTs, he gets very excited when he sees other dogs and goes into full play mode, which other dogs don’t usually appreciate. As a result, he spends most of his time running around in the back yard, playing ball.

If you’re interested in fostering or adopting Winston, please be aware of the requirements:
- Must have experience with Wire Fox Terriers
- No other pets
- No small children
- Fully fenced-in yard
