Genn's December 2024 eye exam, Part 6.
This is the final half of Genn's CAER eye exam - see Part 5 for the first half. The ophthalmologist applies eye drops that dilates the pupils. It takes about 15-20 minutes for the pupils to fully dilate. For the first part of the exam, the ophthalmologist uses a handheld ophthalmic slit lamp, which shines a focused light on the eye and both illuminates and magnifies the entire front of the eyeball for examination. For the second part of the exam, the ophthalmologist uses a binocular indirect ophthalmoscope, which is worn like a head lamp, in combination with a special handheld lense that magnifies and illuminates the inner and rear structures of the eyeball.
Our ophthalmologist requested that we put a muzzle on our wolfdogs for their eye exams. While you can see Genn was extremely well-behaved for the exam and didn't --need-- a muzzle, we still support enabling veterinary staff to feel safe and secure while they perform their jobs and will gladly have our dogs wear one if asked.
This is a teaching clinic, so there was a student ophthalmologist who was able to participate in Genn's exam as an opportunity for hands-on experience! Due to the extra length this added to the video, I've split the video in two - see Part 5 for the first half of Genn's eye exam.
No Benadryl or other sedatives were used for Genn's appointment, so what you're seeing is his true behavior and reactions for his exams. We have put a lot of work into socializing and training him, but his own genetically sound temperament is the primary reason why he handles stuff like this so wonderfully!
Our board certified canine ophthalmologist clinic is Veterinary Eye Institute in Plano, TX. Their staff is fabulous!

Genn's December 2024 eye exam, Part 4.
This is just after Genn's gonioscopy eye exam, when the numbing drops on his eyes are rinsed off with a saline solution, and then different eye drops are applied to dilate his pupils in preparation for his main CAER eye exam.
(For the gonioscopy, the ophthalmologist puts numbing drops on the eyes, so that they can use a special semi-spherical lense on the eye to magnify the tissues around the eyeball and the front of the eyeball itself. The gonioscopy exam checks to make sure that all of the drainage ducts around each eye are open and able to function properly. (Narrow or blocked drainage ducts are linked to the possibility of developing glaucoma.) This exam was done prior to dilating Genn's pupils for his main eye exam.)
Unfortunately, I had his muzzle on a little too tight at the beginning of his exam - sorry Genn. 😆🙈

Fun fact: Genn was the THIRD high content wolfdog in North America to ever get an OFA eye exam! Our high content Cassie was the first, and Genn's littermate sister, Zephyr, was the second.

Fun fact: Cassie was the very FIRST high content wolfdog in North America to ever get an OFA eye exam back in 2020! There had been a few lower percentage wolfdogs who had OFA CAER eye exams before, our own included, but there hadn't been any wolfdogs over 70% who had their eye health OFA certified until Cassie!
