Want to help our local animal rescue organization Acadiana Animal Aid rescue more in the year ahead and be able to assist municipal shelters affected by Hurricane Ida? This year is better than ever because they have opened the contest up to ALL RESCUED PETS which means photos of dogs, cats, horses, small mammals, reptiles, and birds are accepted! We all love a happy tail, so rescued/adopted pets from anywhere, any organization, even those found abandoned are encouraged to join! This is a celebration of cute pets and the power of rescue.

There is big progress being made in Louisiana! We wanted to make sure you were aware of the latest.
The House and Senate passed two resolutions to help make Louisiana a no-kill state, one by Rep. Scott McKnight (HR 12) and the other by Sen. Katrina Jackson (SR 125). These resolutions request local governing authorities and animal shelters to adopt policies and programs that provide alternatives to euthanasia of healthy dogs and cats.
And to help all communities achieve no-kill, the International Municipal Lawyers Association (IMLA) and Best Friends have issued the joint publication “People, Pets, and Policies: Towards Community Supported Animal Sheltering.” This resource provides a variety of policy proposals and guidelines that city attorneys can use as models for their own communities. Please share this free resource with your local officials!
Rep. C. Denise Marcelle refused to give up on HR 169 and got it passed. This resolution establishes a task force — including representatives from Best Friends, the Louisiana Municipal Association, the Police Juries Association, and the Humane Society — to study and make recommendations on how to designate dogs and puppies seized from dogfighting. The task force will report their recommendations back to the legislature next year.
In addition, Rep. Marcelle spearheaded HB 210 through the House, but it, unfortunately, did not pass the Senate Agriculture Committee. This humane bill would have gotten rid of the immediate designation of “contraband” on any dog or puppy seized from dogfighting and given them a better chance to be evaluated and adopted.
