Gerti update:

Unfortunately further diagnostic testing today detected a tumor at the base of Gerti’s heart, called a chemodectoma. Due to the location and size, it would be very risky to operate on her, and due to her declining respiratory condition, it is not in her best interest to due so.

This tumor untreated would have resulted in fluid building around her heart within the next 30-45 days, resulting in congestive heart failure. We sadly had to make a hard decision to help Gerti cross over peacefully tomorrow. 😞💔

Our vet weaned Gerti off oxygen this afternoon to first ensure she is safe to go home tonight. Thankfully her oxygen stats were at a safe enough level to discharge back home.

As hard as this is, Claire is planning a full day for her tomorrow. She bought a cart to take her to the beach and plans on bringing her out for lunch.. for chicken nuggets and burgers.. or honestly maybe both. 🍔

We have received a second angel donor donation of $1000, meaning up to $2000 of donations are going to be matched for Gerti’s medical care until Friday. We have accrued an approximate $5500 in medical expenses in supportive care this last week.

We are asking for help to pay off these expenses, and to send donations to Claire to treat Gerti tomorrow to the day she deserves. Please also keep Claire in your thoughts. 💗💗

We are happy to report that Gerti was discharged from the emergency vet yesterday.

X-rays confirmed that she has pneumonia in her right lung. The vet team started her on IV fluids and medication immediately to help support her body in fighting the infection.

After 24 hours in the oxygen chamber, Gerti was barking up a storm to alert the vet staff she was ready to go home!

Gerti began eating more consistently today and is taking her medication. She will need to return to the vet for a follow up X-ray in a few weeks.

We are grateful for each and every one of you who donated to help cover her emergency bill. We were able to raise $1100/$2200 so far.

Aside from Gerti, we had a total of 3 other emergencies this week which we didn’t have an opportunity to share about.

Including those 3 and Amos’ surgery, we spent upwards of $11,000 of our savings on emergency care. We are desperately seeking assistance to recover those funds.

This sweet beauty is Abby. She weighs 34 pounds and is heartworm negative. Abby was an owner surrender by no fault of her own as the owner is not able to take care of her.
Abby is a gorgeous and petite girl. She has beautiful eyes that simply long for your love. Abby hangs out at her kennel door looking for a familiar face. She may act a little shy at first meeting but once she sees you mean her no harm she is eager to be friends.
Abby was ready for a kennel break. She was easy, easy on leash and followed my lead. She checked out the yard and was curious about her surroundings. She preferred to be near me getting back scratches and ear scrubs.
Abby is an exceptionally sweet and loving girl. She seems to be very submissive and simply wanted nothing more than my love and comfort. She has great manners and she wants to please her person. She was super good for her recent nail trim and was so submissive.
Abby is a beautiful, sweet, friendly, loving, and calm girl, what more could you ask for? She will surely have you wrapped around her little paw in no time if you will give her a chance.

Meet W***y! W***y is a 10 month old pit mix and he is looking for his forever home! He is the sweetest boy and enjoys cuddling and is sure to lay in your lap.
Along with being the sweetest boy, W***y is very smart too. He is in the process of potty training and in his free time loves to sit for a treat!
W***y shows no signs of food aggression, and had a very submissive personality. He is currently in isolation recovering from a respiratory infection. This is truly one of the friendliest dogs I’ve ever met.
W***y was pulled just hours before he was set to be euthanized due to over capacity. No issues or fault of his own. W***y deserves a good life and in return will be your best pal.

We just pulled Gerti (fka Poppy from BARC) yesterday from the shelter. She was doing great yesterday, but this morning took a quick downhill in her health.

She visited the vet this morning to begin treatment for a URI & a UTI, however this evening her breathing is increasingly labored and she won’t eat.

Her foster mom is rushing her to VERGI emergency vet as we speak for monitoring. It is very likely she has pneumonia, and this can be dangerous for a senior dog.

We will likely ask for X-rays to confirm and have her stay overnight for monitoring. This will be an approximately $2,000 expense for her care.

Frida is a gem—house and crate trained, and she gets along well with other dogs when introduced properly. Her loving and affectionate nature makes her an ideal companion for any home.

However, Frida finds the bustling sounds of New York City overwhelming. We are looking for a foster home outside of NYC where she can enjoy a quieter environment and thrive.

We wanted to share an update about our boy, Amos! Thank you everyone for your well wishes and donations.

Our boy experienced a DOUBLE obstruction. He ingested a part of a toy that was stuck in his lower intestines, but also ANCHORED in his stomach. These two pieces were attached by a string, and the string was sawing and cutting into the wall of his intestines.

We are fortunate that his foster mom noticed signs right away, and he was able to be brought into the ER. If we had waited another day, it’s possible he could have perforated his bowel and needed inches of his intestine removed from the damage.

Amos is now home and on the mend. He will need to lay low the next few weeks while he is recovering. This surgery was a risk as he has an enlarged heart, but we are grateful that he is on the mend.

We were able to raise $500 total so far towards his surgery. We are still accepting donations to offset the cost of his emergency care.

Our lamb chop loving Amos needs your immediate help.

The last 24 hours, Amos has been throwing up his food and then refused to eat/drink. Our boy was rushed to the emergency vet this evening for diagnostic testing. Unfortunately, an x-ray determined that he has a foreign body obstruction in his intestines.

Even though his heart is enlarged from heartworm, we have to take the risk to put him through surgery. VERGI is calling in a specialist this evening to perform the procedure.

The surgery is quoted at $5000. This includes a 48 hour hospitalization stay and monitoring. We need your help to raise for medical expenses to offset the cost of this unexpected procedure.

7/26/24: BEHAVIOR NOTE: Head lowered, whale eyed, did take treats that I tossed. Avoiding leash and pressed into back of kennel. Began to show teeth at the leash and nip. Able to leash and do a light muzzle. We began petting her and she trembled but remained still for work up

7/28/24: BEHAVIOR NOTE: Head low, tail tucked, dilated eyes, ears forward, cowering in back of kennel, low growling. When leash was on she started thrashing and biting at the leash. She had to be muzzled and carried to new kennel.

7/30/24: BEHAVIOR NOTE: dog was in the kennel and when i approched dog avoided the leash and once i was able to lasso the leash on her she began to thrash and bite on the leash and would hop with her mouth opened walking towards me or anyone walking by once i had her calmed and just waiting till her kennel was clean dog then walked behind me and when placign her in her kennel she began to thrash again but as i walked in the kennel she did to and i quickly got out and closed the door.

It’s been exactly a week since Gilly left the shelter. We were upset to read in her notes that her owner moved… and not only left her, but also another dog abandoned in their backyard for two whole weeks. Someone overheard her knocking down trash cans in a panic. 😩

As a high heartworm positive senior, we made the decision to focus on her health and elect for a spay abort procedure last Thursday.

Not only is Gilly recovering from this surgery, but she visited the vet a second time today to address other concerns. She was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, double ear infection AND an upper respiratory infection. 😅

We are hopeful that her appetite will start to return now that her issues have all been addressed. We need your support for her medical journey, she still has a long road ahead. She has a dedicated foster to support her through her 3-4 month medical journey.
