💛💜WESTMINSTER 2024 💜💛

The ebb and flow of the universe always seems to come back to water you when you’re thirsty for rain.

This year I had the honor to stand by a young
brown dog as he carried me on his proud young shoulders. To say that Ham always delivers cannot be understated. He commanded full attention and earned a beautiful Best of Variety under the insightful Pam Bruce followed by being shortlisted in the strongest collection of toy dogs that I can remember.

As if that wasn’t enough, I got to watch proudly as Hosaka-san claimed the big ribbon. With patience, repetition, repetition, repetition…and a pinch of nervous energy, Kaz has subtly shaped who I am. He is a master class in unwavering self-criticism and once again proves that pressure makes diamonds.

It was an honor to stand by him as he ascends the throne, this time with the homebred Sage leading the charge.

A standard is set in place to describe what is an ideal for a breed, a blueprint. Style is born between the lines, a flash of unexpected color or detail that words struggle to adequately explain. Although someone can be trained in classic art or a vocalist can take voice lessons, the truly gifted take that blueprint and find their own way. Instead of stepping into the realm of generic, they stamp a breed with a unique character. No one did this better than Ianthe.

The Baliwick toy poodles needed no introduction, their style spoke to who they were before any catalog was needed to confirm. Their carriage, face detail, coat, topline, “the feet!”(as Ianthe would often remark) was unmistakabley Baliwick. She was a pioneer, mentor and loving mother.

She took a chance on a kid and my life will never be the same because of her influence. She may be gone, but I see her when I look into the eyes of the legacy she helped create for me and many others. Rest easily Ianthe, I hope there is a Chinese buffet on the other side. ❤️

Breeders are wired different…

A good breeder lives in a state of constant criticism. There are few things in life that have an objective measure of perfection like that of what we seek in our dogs. We neglect our own imperfections in the pursuit of this dream. “That dog is too tall, that dog has bad hair, that one has a gay tail, I wish that dog used himself better, that dog isn’t a good eater, this one screams when I dremel his toenails….is that genetic?” A singular success doesn’t define us yet we let our failures mock us daily. The persistent state of fault seeking keeps you up at night and consumes your life. We fix problems in the whelping box and not with confrontation or a social media platform. We have great success and even bigger failures. We love hard and cry harder. We expect the best from those evaluating our dogs but know that our opinion will always be the most cutting. We make mistakes that we try not to repeat. We seek perfection yet never achieve it because that would mean our work is done. We question why we keep putting ourselves through this…and then a dog comes along that reminds us why.

I’m happy I get to share the world with you. May we always strive to improve.
