Words shape ideas. Ideas shape behavior. Words matter.

Words shape ideas. Ideas shape behavior. Words matter.

As humans, our thought patterns directly shape our perception of the world and those around us. Our thoughts become our words, and therefore our language and visa versa. This can impact how we view and treat others.

There are a lot of words that continue to disempower dogs, even if they feel quite benign or loving and used with endearing intentions.

There are ways we should consider reframing these terms to be more modern in our interactions with dogs and how we perceive them.

How can we make a shift in the language we use in our daily lives to reduce the negative associations with traditional oppressive jargon? Here are just a few examples that place value on their inherent worth, not simply their value to and for humans. That includes replacing objectifying words like "it" and infantilizing words like "furbaby."

What are some words or terms you have found to be repressive and disempowering? Alternatively, what words or phrases have you found help to center dogs and their inherent interests?

New month, new CAT CRASH COURSE!

As a volunteer in our local animal shelters, I see a lot of cats surrendered, sometimes more than once. To that end, I created a FREE online Cat Crash Course that covers the essentials of cat ownership. I piloted it through our local animals shelters, and now I'm offering it to anyone who wants to understand cats and learn more about their needs. The course will be offered on the fourth Saturday of every month, 1 PM Central Time.

I hope to see you in my class on April 27th.

⭐️We need your help!⭐️

We are currently gathering information in a survey for shelters and rescues to help us refine what kind of additional resources we can develop to help with dogs in their care who are suffering from separation-related behavior problems. From the preliminary data that we have collected, it appears there is a great need for these resources.

This research will be instrumental in supporting our shelters and rescues, so I ask that you share this post (or the link) with everyone that you know so we can gather as much data as possible.

Thank you for sharing far and wide!

Walking into a pet store can be overwhelming. The rows and rows of food for a cat...There are so many options! And not just brands but also within each brand. How do you choose?!

Many of us just look at front of the bag or can of food. We see a cute, healthy cat and labels that evoke a sense of natural, nutritious, wild.... maybe even referencing lions and tigers. This is brand marketing and, wow, does it work on me! I am personally very susceptible to marketing, especially clean lines, bright colours, and pictures of big choice cuts of meat. If it looks like human food then I'm a total goner.

Unfortunately, the front of the bag or can of food tells you almost nothing about the food inside. There are some regulations in place in Canada and the US that dictate what labels can be used, but they really don't tell us that much. For example, the label "Cat food with lamb" can be used with only 3% of lamb in the diet.

So what do we do? We turn the bag or can over and look at the ingredient list. It's certainly not a perfect option but it can be useful to determine what food to feed your cat.

So how do you read ingredient lists?
1. Look at the first five ingredients. Are they animal-sourced? Or plant-sourced?
2. Are any of these top five ingredients labelled as "meals"?
3. Aim for the top five ingredients to be animal-sourced.

"Meals" have a low moisture content and is usually the main source of protein, even if it's not the first ingredient. Plant-based "meals" that are high up in the ingredient list are considered to be a low quality option for cats.

Grab your cat's bag or can of food and comment below with the top five ingredients! I'd love to see what you're feeding your cat.
