How We Got Here

For years we have joked about the invisible “Sucker” tattoo on our foreheads. I think the first creature to appear on our doorstep was Shadow the Cat, in 1983. When we left to go shopping on a Saturday morning, he was up in a tree by our driveway, and when we returned many hours later he was still up there looking more than a little distressed with his legs crossed. He was retrieved with a ladder, brought inside and immediately made good use of a quickly-assembled litter box. We advertised in the local store and the community newspaper about our found cat, with no response. After a couple of weeks, we finally accepted he was here to stay, and purchased proper cat essentials, only to receive a phone call. It turned out he was one of several “store cats” for a butcher located about a kilometer away. It was OK; we could keep him if we wanted to.

Since then, we have been, apparently, a beacon for unwanted domestic animals, as well as choosing a few of our own. However, the ones that choose us seem to far outnumber, and we have not sought out a family pet for a long time. Some of our wards have been abused, others were just no longer wanted. All of them are local, but that makes them no less important than creatures rescued from overseas - in fact in our view, it is just as important to take care of our own community. We love them all. Our sanctuary is currently comprised of four dogs, three cats and two parrots. I will introduce you to their stories another day.
