Showing dogs in winter in Tasmania can be extremely challenging. Yesterday we ventured to Brighton for the Hound Club of Tasmania two Championship Shows. We really should have packed a canoe. It rained from the start of the day until the end of the day.

We took our young team who are still learning the ropes of showing but doing well against older competition. We don’t expect big wins at their age, just to see them having fun.

So what was today’s big testing about?

Pugs, French Bulldogs and British Bulldogs are being tested on a voluntary basis for their respiratory function.

The Respiratory Function Grading Test is a breathing test conducted by a qualified veterinarian. It is based on a series of tests at rest and after exercise (3min run at 6km/h).

The grading is as follows:
0 - exceptional, no issues detected
1 - excellent, minor issues detected
2 - good but can only be bred with a 0 or a 1
3 - not recommended for breeding

We took 3 girls with us to be tested today under Dr Arthur House.
2 Girls were graded as 1
1 Girl was graded a 2

We are extremely thrilled with these results and it shows that we are on the right track with our breeding programme.

Please always check with a breeder the following if you are looking for a Pug
1. Have the parents of the Puppy been DNA tested for hereditary diseases, and are they clear.
2. Have the parents been graded under the respiratory function grading.

Whilst neither of these two factors are required to be conducted in Australia at this time, it’s extremely important that responsible breeders are conducting these tests. THESE TESTS MATTER

So who and what is this that has joined our show team??

Introducing DIAMONDMAS FRENCH CONNECTION (Kracka)

Kracka is a Miniature American Shepherd (MAS) MAS are a relatively new breed in Australia and we have been very fortunate to be entrusted with this young man.

We hope to do his breeder Paula Alan proud, and we certainly look forward to working with her and showing this young man to his fullest potential.

Kracka is just over 8 weeks of age so he won’t be making his show debut for another month. Feel free to message us and find out when and where so you can come and meet him in person.

OMG We are a little crazy 🤪 but we decided to brave the minus 3 conditions and attend The Classic Dog Show at Quercus Park on Saturday 🥶

On the 2nd of June 2024 Pug Club South Australia held their Championship Show under Judge Mr Takio Kamei (Japan).

Spurcius Pugs was proud to Sponsor the Runner Up In Show and Open In Show.

Runner Up In Show was the beautiful Parkhurst Madam Butterfly owned by Miss K. Shilton. She was also Bitch Challenge and Aus Bred in Show.

Open in Show was the stunning Sup Ch Kabova Gold Rush owned by Ms Ash Godsell. He was also Best in Show and Challenge Dog.

Off we went to Brighton on Saturday for the Working Dog Club Of Tasmania’s 2 All Breed Shows.

Wilbur joined us recently for a holiday but as it turns out he loves his new digs and pug friends so he’s decided to stay.
