TO BE EUTHANIZED IN NYC

Date of Intake: 21-Dec-2024

Young little cutie FROSTY needs you now!

Thrown out onto the streets to fend for himself just before Christmas, the world must have seemed so overwhelming for adorable, young boy FROSTY. Once he got to the overcrowded shelter, things didn’t get much better for Frosty who made it clear he would respond best to a slow approach. But that’s only common sense! Frosty will allow people to briefly pet him, but he still is uncomfortable and wary. Won’t you please provide a safe haven for this frightened cutie? Nobody should be euthanized for being scared, and Frosty has a long, rewarding life ahead of him! If you can foster or adopt Frosty to save his life, please send a private message or email to our group, the details are below; and we will assist you every step of the way through the process.

FROSTY 217246, 2 years old, 12 lbs., male
Queens ACC, small mixed breed, Tan/black
Owner surrender reason: date of intake: 21-Dec-2024, found stray
Behavior Assessment Rating: New Hope only
No children under 13
Place with a New Hope rescue
Medical Behavior: sedated

AT RISK MEMO:

Frosty is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Frosty has not acclimated well to the shelter environment. Frosty has been intensely fearful in care and has escalated to snarling/snapping at handlers in attempts to handle him, and during interactions he is aloof with all handlers in attempts to interact with him. Medically, Frosty is apparently healthy.

Frosty came into the care center as a stay so his history is unknown. Frosty exhibits significant fear, avoidance behaviors, and defensive aggression, including growling, lunging, leash biting, and snapping during handling. While he occasionally allows minimal petting, these moments are brief, and his body language (stiff posture, whale eyes, lip licking, and pinned-back ears) reflects consistent discomfort. Frosty is available for rescue with a New Hope partner.

INTAKE NOTES—Date of Intake: 21-Dec-2024

Upon intake, Frosty would snap at staff if approached quickly, or if he noticed movement towards his face.

Potential challenges:
Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:
Fearful/potential for defensive aggression- Frosty exhibits significant fear, avoidance behaviors, and defensive aggression, including growling, lunging, leash biting, and snapping during handling. To address Frosty's handling and touch sensitivity issues, a structured desensitization and counter-conditioning training plan is essential. Begin by creating a calm and controlled environment, using positive reinforcement to build trust. Start with brief, non-threatening interactions, rewarding Frosty with treats and praise for calm behavior. Gradually increase the duration and proximity of handling, always ensuring Frosty remains comfortable. Introduce handling tools and grooming equipment slowly, allowing Frosty to investigate them at his own pace. If he exhibits fear or aggression, pause and give him space before trying again. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.

A staff member writes: THE WIZARD is the sweetest and cutest guy around! At any moment, you can walk past his kennel and find him quietly and calmly wagging his tail and awaiting the next time someone stops by to give him some love and attention. This sweet boy was recently adopted and got a taste of life in a cozy home for the holidays! Sadly, he was returned 2 days later and is once again in the shelter hoping for a home by the end of the year. Can you help adorable The Wizard find his forever home?

The Wizard is 2 yr old Male SMB dog that was returned from adoption because he was not a good fit in the home and doesn't get along with children. He was neutered during his previous stay on 20-Dec-2024. The Wizard lived with one adult and a 4 year old child for 2 days. He was said to be social with adult strangers and visitors, but did not care for young children. He was playful with all dogs, and has no experience with cats. He doesn’t like to share his food or treats, and was returned with a bite history listed below. He uses wee wee pads and also goes to the bathroom outside and is said to be partially house trained. The Wizard isn’t bothered by much but is scared when startled and he may growl if his paws are touched. He is very playful and likes to spend time with family, following them around.

Bite history:
On 12/22, the adopter and her daughter were sitting on the couch together. The Wizard came into the room and began growling at the daughter who was cuddled up with the client. The Wizard walked and jumped up to the couch and grabbed the daughter on the right arm. Due to wearing a long-sleeved onesie, the dog's bite did not break skin, draw blood or leave any marks. He did not let go immediately, and the adopter pried his mouth open to which The Wizard then left the room.

On another occasion the adopter picked up her daughter and The Wizard came and jumped up at the child's foot and bit the child's shoe shaking his head back and forth. Client walked away with child in hand and dog let go and ran away to another room.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Date of initial: 13-Dec-2024
Summary: BARH

ENERGY LEVEL:
We have no history on The Wizard so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations:
No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:
No children (under 13)- Due to the wizard resource guarding we recommend he is placed in a home with No children (under 13)

Potential challenges:
Resource guarding
Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression
Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:

Resource guarding- In the care center it is reported that the wizard began to resource guard a high-value treat displaying baring teeth and growling.

Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: The Wizard is a bit fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give The Wizard the option to walk away from any social interaction. The Wizard should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be The Wizard’s choice to approach a new person or thing. The Wizard would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. See handout on Decompression Period.

INDEMNITY WAIVER:

The Wizard is a 2 year old male, brown, small, mixed breed, dog. He was initially brought in as a stray. During medical handling, The Wizard was bright, alert, responsive, and hydrated. The potential adopter needs to be aware that a behavior assessment was performed on The Wizard pre-adoption. The Wizard received a Level 3 behavior determination with a no children under 13 recommendation. In the care center it is reported that The Wizard began to resource guard a high-value treat displaying baring teeth and growling. The Wizard is a bit fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give The Wizard the option to walk away from any social interaction. The Wizard should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be The Wizard’s choice to approach a new person or thing. The Wizard would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. The Wizard also participated in dog playgroups. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, The Wizard doesn't greet any of the novel dogs present, practicing avoidance. He will seek attention from one of the handlers present before being returned to kennel. The adopter needs to assume all responsibility for behaviors that may arise in the home and provide any appropriate positive reinforcement training, management, or behavior modification that The Wizard may need going forward.

INTAKE BEHAVIOR:
Date of intake: 11-Dec-2024
Summary: During intake the dog allowed all handling.
