Shakira ACCT-A-220847 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Shakira must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER, FOSTER or ADOPTER by FRIDAY, JUNE 13TH at 10AM. Should Shakira’s medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
This beauty is full of bounce and personality. Found as a stray on May 20th, Shakira greets everyone at the front of her kennel with a wiggly body and happy paws, excited for attention and ready to go. Once she’s leashed up, she’s eager to get out and explore. On walks, Shakira is strong and curious, she shows her true puppy-like charm—wiggly, playful, and super affectionate. She can get a bit jumpy and mouthy when overstimulated, but is very responsive to redirection, especially with treats. She knows “sit” and takes snacks gently from your hand. She’ll thrive with someone ready to provide structure, exercise, and plenty of love. If you're looking for a joyful companion who just needs a little guidance and a lot of love, Shakira might be your girl! Please bring any resident dogs as well as all members of your household along for a meet. We think Shakira would do best in a home where any children are over the age of 13. Due to her length of stay, Shakira is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner, foster, or adopter.

BEHAVIOR:
Per staff 6/8: When I took her out, she held a toy in her mouth the entire time and didn’t leash bite. She did that for 2 days straight, so the leash biting isn’t consistent.
Per volunteer 6/6: Good dog.
Per staff 5/30: Playful.
Per volunteer 5/26: Very sweet, well behaved, slow runner.
Per volunteer 5/25: Shakira was easy to get out of her kennel and outside. She pulled moderately on the leash when we went for a walk and sniffed all the good smells. She is a tad jumpy, so she may need some continued work on her manners but she jumps up because she wants affection. She is a sweet pup. While we waited to go into one of the open runs, she happily looked around and enjoyed getting pets. In the play yard she sniffed around some more, and I was able to get her to play with a toy for a short time. No issues returning her to her kennel.
Per volunteer 5/24: She was at the front of the kennel and eager to come out, soft eyes, tongue hanging out, loose wiggly body. She sniffed the enrichment maze but didn’t engage in eating the treats.
I bent down and she came over and solicited attention- when I stopped petting her she started jumping and did some mild leash biting and was redirect-able with cheese.
She was easy to return to kennel.
Per staff 5/24: Super wiggly and energetic. Tore apart a stuffed bear. Very playful and sweet. Allowed all handling.
Per volunteer 5/21:
Kennel presentation: Shakira was at the front of her kennel jumping on it with her two front paws with a very wiggly body. As I opened the kennel door to lasso her she continued to have her two front paws on the kennel and she did keep leash dodging out of excitement for a couple minutes but I was able to lasso her over the head. she then jumped right our of her kennel.
Leash: moderate pulling
Handling: Shakira was very strong on leash, when passing another dog in the kennels she did begin to bark at the other dog. I brought her in the volunteer office for her eval and she was very wiggly and hyper. At times she would get very jumpy and mouthy but could be redirected by asking her to sit or with a treat. She displayed a lot of puppy like mannerisms. She knows sit and takes treats nicely out of your hand. Outside she seems to be housebroken as she went to the bathroom right away. Returning her to kennel I had no issues as she hopped right in.
Play: no interest
Toys: no interest
Per staff 5/21, playgroup: Good greetings, steerable, nervous, curious, gave vocal corrections, trying to play, push/pull, pushy at times.
Per staff 5/20: Allowed all handling, allowed restraint with no issues.
Per finder 5/20: Friendly with all (strangers, children, other animals), on leash she was good - leash bites. Lightly bit someone (did not break skin she leash bites). Friendly, cuddly, scared, quiet, playful.
