FOLLOW ALONG FRIDAY!
Lessons from Week 5 of Puppy Preschool.
“Having opportunities to play with healthy, vaccinated, temperamentally “safe” dogs of a variety of personalities, breeds, ages and sizes is a very important part of socialization for a puppy. If a puppy is unsure or shows fear or hesitation in playing with other dogs, you should especially look for opportunities for the puppy to interact with calm, gentle dogs to help build confidence. Puppies who don’t grow up with positive dog to dog interactions are the dogs who grow up barking at, being afraid of or showing aggressive behavior towards other dogs… because they don’t understand them and their behaviors! Many of the communication behaviors a puppy learns in play with others dogs are helpful for building appropriate communication and responses in human interactions as well!”
FOLLOW ALONG FRIDAY!
You can begin creating good habits in attentiveness by asking for and rewarding your puppy’s attention. Look for opportunities throughout the day to get your puppy’s attention. Say his or her name and encourage him or her to look at you. If the puppy does not know or respond well to his name yet, follow up with kissy, squeaky or silly noises or make dramatic or awkward movements (clapping, jumping, falling to the ground, etc.) to get his or her attention. If he or she shows a response of attentiveness (ideally looking at you, although ear twitches, tail wags or coming to you are also acceptable responses demonstrating your puppy’s attention, REWARD!
FIX-IT FRIDAY comments!
Thank you all for your great feedback!
First of all, this is a very NORMAL puppy behavior. Puppies or even new, older dogs do not naturally understand what is “theirs” and what is not - this has to be taught! Just like you can teach a dog that your electric cords, towels, clothing, etc., are not to taste or play with, it is possible to teach a puppy that the children’s toys are off limits, in spite of looking similar to the puppy’s toys. But this will take training! It should also be mentioned that most puppies love attention, so this grabbing a toy and running can quickly become a “game” if the puppy realizes it will get you up and running and “in dialogue” with the puppy! 😮🤣
So what do we do about this?
1. It is very helpful to have any new dogs or young puppies drag a light leash around whenever they are out of their crates/pens. This will enable easier access and reinforcement in all areas of training.
2. Because this is a behavior I want to discourage, I should create a negative association with the behavior. I find a 50/50 white vinegar and water mixture in a squirt bottle works wonderfully, as I can reprimand the puppy without physically touching it (potentially rewarding) and the spray also naturally encourages the puppy to spit the item out.
3. Follow up with praise and reward for an appropriate response (spitting the item out and leaving it - I will be prepared to spray again if the puppy goes right back to the item after the initial response)
4. While entire prevention is not possible unless I never let the puppy in the majority of the house, and I also want the puppy to learn to leave human items alone, not just never encounter them, I can help the training along by providing plenty of interactive, appropriate play opportunities with the puppy’s toys, as well as confining it safely when I cannot supervise and intervene in these situations.

FIX-IT FRIDAY!!!
You let your 15 week beagle puppy out of its crate to have some supervised “free time”. You cannot completely “puppy proof” your home because you have 4 young children and nothing stays in place for long!
Your puppy grabs a hold of one of your children’s stuffed animals and runs...
Please comment with 1-3 ways you could set yourself up for success in addressing this behavior.
My comments and another video will be posted in ~48 hours. 😊
FANTASTIC FEATURE FRIDAY!
Introducing WAMBACH!
In Spring, 2020, we were asked by #caninecompanions (www.canine.org), a non-profit organization that we volunteer to raise puppies for, if we would take a pup for a few weeks of “Morrow training camp”! We were happy to oblige, especially since this special pup had been a past student in one of our classes! Little did any of us realize that the country would soon “shut down” due to the first COVID outbreak, and what was going to be “a couple weeks” turned into 10 wonderful weeks “stuck” with a pup named Wambach! After her time with us, Wambach returned to her volunteer puppy raiser in Illinois to complete her puppy training.
Wambach entered Canine Companions’ professional service dog training in May, 2021, and we were thrilled to receive news this week that she graduated as a Facility Dog to help children through another non-profit organization that works to prevent, intervene, and treat child abuse and neglect. We are so proud of Wambach and her volunteer puppy raiser and so thankful for the opportunity we had to know and love her! Here are some clips from her training time with us. 😊
3 weeks - that is about how old these puppies are!
