Meet LITTLE DEBBIE. This poor darling girl is a poster child for the effects of neglect. We pulled her from a rural shelter hoping we could help her but sadly we will never be able to post her for adoption. Her health issues are too severe, all driven by a lack of basic veterinary care. She's spending the weekend with an amazing foster family, enjoying an indoor home, a soft bed, regular meals and unconditional love. She got a nice bath, soaking years of dirt and grime from her frail body. Her pain level is increasing, and when it can no longer be managed with medication she will be humanely euthanized, probably sometime this week. Please honor this girl by reading this post and making sure your pets receive the basic care they deserve. It didn't have to be this way for Little Debbie...

She is heartworm positive. Her case is severe and advanced and she likely would not survive treatment. Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitos. All dogs should have an ANNUAL heartworm test and should be kept on a heartworm prevention plan prescribed by a veterinarian. A monthly chewable and an annual test could have saved her from this cruel disease. If only someone had loved her enough to provide her with basic care.

Little Debbie tested positive for Lyme disease. She was also covered in fleas. Fleas lead to tapeworms, which can be devastating if left untreated. Flea and tick prevention is readily available.

Little Debbie has mammary tumors, and additional tumors through her body. Spaying a female dog helps protect them from mammary tumors. And pyometra. And repeated pregnancies. Spaying/neutering your dogs (and cats) is basic care that can help reduce the number of homeless animals euthanized every day and prevent future health problems for your beloved pets.

Little Debbie's other health issues include an Inguinal hernia (usually prevented by spay surgery), a mouth full of rotten teeth, a collapsed trachea, a heart murmur, an enlarged heart, a large tumor on her back side. Her lungs are a mess and she coughs constantly. And she's deaf. She likely has additional issues, but at some point you stop looking.

Little Debbie could have lived a longer, happier life if someone had loved her enough to provide her with basic veterinary care. Your dog should visit the vet annually. Their vaccines should be kept up-to-date. They should have annual heartworm tests and be kept on flea and tick and heartworm prevention. They should be spayed/neutered. Anyone lucky enough to be a pet parent should take the job seriously and provide their pets with basic health care. If affordability is an issue, there are clinics available to help. Check out UCAN or Pets In Need.

Please please please don't let Little Debbie die in vain. Let her story remind you to schedule your pet's annual vet appointment, don't decline the heartworm test, and listen carefully to your vet's advice.

And, finally, if you've read to the end of Little Debbie's story, please say a little prayer for this girl as she faces her final journey across the Rainbow Bridge.
