🥳 Today was our second nose work trial since the tornado. In July we tried a bit, however, neither of us was really ready yet, and it didn’t end well. But today, he totally rocked each class, even with the heat! I am over the moon happy for him and just a smidge proud that he actually placed in each class, which is a first for us! He’s the best boy 💙 🏅(he worked very hard, then played hard when we got home, so yes, he’s beat!)

“Motion is easy, stillness is hard..”

Somehow, the skill that is one of the most critical for a dog to have to in order to live harmoniously with us humans, is the skill that so many trainers and owners have missed.

Instead of developing a comprehensively well rounded dog, with both an on and off-switch, we focus obsessively on action. More commands, more play, more exercise—as if all that action will train a dog how to actually relax and be calm when needed, and not just the for the fleeting moments when they’re tired.

Folks, action—motion, doing stuff—is wildly easy for dogs. Being calm and still, especially in the face of tempting distractions, is anything but. And yet, most continue to blindly drink in, and act upon the old, overly simplistic adage of “A tired dog is a good dog.” No, a tired dog is simply a temporarily tired dog, and unless you’ve taught them specifically how to be calm, still, and chill when needed, you’re simply creating an athlete who doesn’t have an off-switch, and who will only need more and more action to be “a good dog.”

You’re creating a motion j***y, and you and your dog will pay the price.

Instead, teach all the aspects and skills your dog—and you—need to enjoy life together. While it’s counterintuitive, training dogs to do nothing for extended periods of time while the world goes on around them is one of the least taught and least understood aspects of successful dog training. And to be clear, this isn’t encouraging folks to not train action-based work, or play and exercise their dogs—no—what it is encouraging is to BE SURE to teach the less obvious but incredibly valuable skill of stillness and calm on demand. It’s encouraging folks to see that often what doesn’t look like much, and won’t impress your friends or colleagues, is the thing you’ll likely most enjoy (need!) when calm, quiet, and peace is desired.

If you’re struggling, and you’re doing all the action, perhaps take a step back and honestly assess how much time and energy and focus you’ve put on training stillness. In my experience, it’s the the thing most often missed, and as I said above, least understood.

The advanced class had a breakthrough session learning new techniques for teaching the 'place' command, which will help their dogs transition to off-leash heeling and develop a stronger bond with their human partners. 👏🏻😎

Here students are practicing the AKC CGC “walking through a crowd” exercise! Learning to walk together as a team, as the dog learns to focus on the handler and ignore people and dogs!

This team effort was “Leap Frog Down”, and these teams definitely deserve a hand, they did exceptionally well! 👏🏻🎉

A little back story on Ace. The first night of classes, Ace was very unsure of his surroundings, and definitely not sure he wanted to be around six other dogs and their people. So, Ace did his “studies” with just himself, and his dad & mom, before all the other students arrived. Fast forward six weeks later, and THIS is what we see! A strong confident pup and his dad, literally nailing every exercise with bold confidence and even performing beautiful “stays”! I am beyond proud of this duo and so happy they chose YouReign to be a part of their journey! Go get em’ you two! You make a great team! 🥳

I have THE BEST husband in WHOLE world!! He has worked endlessly for four days (and about five additional years 😂) to put the walls up in the training building. Thank you to those who helped him out both in months past, and this past weekend! It is really coming together nicely! YouReign Dog Training

My career in formal obedience training began thirteen years ago, although my love for dogs and training really began as a small child, when I fell in love with a white German Shepherd. In 2008, Shelby came into my life, and she would be my first experience with formal obedience showing. Together we received our first AKC Obedience Titles of Novice Dog, Companion Dog, and Companion Dog Excellent. In 2017, my girl Reign, a female German Shepherd, came on the scene. We hit the ground running and have obtained an AKC Beginner Novice Title, Companion Dog Title, a UKC Novice leg, and UKC SPOT Certification. Currently we are working on training to obtain our AKC Companion Dog Excellent Title.

Here at YouReign Dog Training I offer a balanced approach to training for you and your dog. Building a relationship of trust and respect, with obedience as the foundation. It is my desire to give you the tools and knowledge to train your dog, keeping everyone happy and healthy in your home. Helping you grow in positivity, patience and persistence.
