“On Mother's Day, tragedy struck Katie's barn when a heavy fire engulfed the premises. Thanks to a neighbor's alert at 2:30 am, Katie and I rushed to the scene to find the barn filled with smoke and flames advancing towards the horse stalls. Despite the chaos, we managed to rescue all 16 horses, albeit with some suffering from smoke inhalation. While we are grateful that there were no injuries to the horses, the fire has left a devastating impact on Katie's livelihood. Countless belongings, including custom saddles, boots, bridles, halters, furniture, and essential equipment for her business, were lost in the blaze. Additionally, the horses require time off for their health and safety, hindering Katie's ability to generate income to maintain her lesson horses. If you know Katie, you know that she usually is always putting others needs in front of hers- from her horses, to employees, to strangers she doesn't even know. She would be the last person to ask for help for herself. She has a tough road ahead not only with her horses, but with her business in terms of business operations and replacing her equipment and belongings. Any help would be greatly appreciated!”

Ugh. Breeding season. Where do I even start?

I will say I think if you’re breeding one mare to carry, the odds are probably significantly more in your favor. If you’re flushing mares, embryo transfers, etc… it’s significantly more work.

It wouldn’t surprise me if it’s 500 miles more a week on my truck. I’m at the breeding farm almost everyday from February to July.

Some mares are easy as can be, but some are extremely difficult and in my experience, there value directly correlates. 🤣

Last year, we had one born dead, one died at day 3, one one born with tendons tight and couldn’t stand (required immediate vet assistance) and one was born with tendons too loose and also required vet work. One… was born with no issue, but still had to have a hernia surgery.

We got NOTHING bred last year on flushes. An entire season. 😫 We ended up buying embryos and paying huge breeding farm bills. The year was a complete loss. We did flush alot of embryos, but nothing stuck in recips.

Now, fast forward, we are mid season with not a lot to show for it yet. We have one embryo that’s looking promising, close to the 45 day mark (Adios Pantalones x a Pritzi Stinsi 37) and we are flushing three next week. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 We just took a huge loss, but we are thankful for the one that’s here and healthy. We have one more due in the next week or so.

My story is not the only one of struggles.

It’s just a hard business to be in, and let’s face it, baby horses are suicidal already. 😅

When it does go your way, it’s the best feeling ever. Getting to run a c**t we bred is the best accomplishment. Seeing crosses we dreamed about come to fruition, there is nothing like it. I am of course a very small breeder with very big dreams. We will keep throwing our money down on red, knowing one day luck will go our way.

When you want to buy that $10,000 dollar well bred prospect, just remember many of us can’t even get them on the ground for that. If they are selling for that it’s likely at a loss. If you factored in your time, it most certainly would be. It’s not about the money, it’s about the love of the sport and furthering the game. It’s about the love of the horses. Hoping that you’re raising the next superstar.

When you gamble for a living, you have to take the highs and lows.
