Former shelter pup, Koda, and her owner, Michelle demonstrate the reality of achieving your dream dog and the importance of training!
“People will often get dogs that aren’t right for them because they tend to assume when they get a certain type of dog, it will come out exactly the way they see in movies or media. But there’s a lot of effort that is placed into achieving that. I think that people need to be realistic about what dog is truly right for their home and family, what exercise and enrichment needs they are willing to meet in order to find success in home placement for shelter dogs.
In general, I also think training is extremely important. Even just training the basics can make a world of difference in a household. Training in any form will also encourage a deeper bond between you and your pup. If we can encourage everyone to train their dogs, the less likely there will be reasons to rehome them. Not all dogs come pre-trained, so always adopt with the expectation to put in some level of effort with your new house mate.”
