The baby Sun conures are growing like crazy! Sweet little dinos
It's been a busy Fall for us behind the scenes here at Birdie B&B, lots of cleaning, re-organizing and preparing for next season!
We had a lovely surprise this past week with the arrival of a 2 day old Sun conure for care. Their nest was abandoned very close to hatching and the breeder successfully completed incubating the eggs :) It's sibling hatched yesterday and was delivered to us this morning, here's a quick video of one of the many feeds a day they receive! Today they are 2 and 6 days old :)
The moment you think things are starting to wind down for the season.... more youngsters will arrive! 😂
A couple of young pigeons we have in care at the moment :) They're such sweet babies
Who wants to play ? This itty-bitty had me puzzled for a moment as I've never had one brought in before... 6 grams, found on the sidewalk with no trees/bushes around, no injuries. We're right on the southern edge of their breeding grounds and these little songbirds nest on the ground typically, which is likely why it had no injuries from 'falling' from a nest.
We had an unusual house guest at Birdie B&B last night....not a bird, but it has wings! 😂 Arriving chilled and dehydrated, this 4 gram baby bat had been without its mom for a few days and was in pretty rough shape 🙁 After being warmed and hydrated overnight he really brightened, opened his eyes and has found so much energy. Our little 'Bruce' is now on his way to Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary where he'll receive the best of care and have some other bats to grow up with ❤ I've always been intrigued by them but thank you Bruce for teaching me to love baby bats, he's so adorable how could anyone not love the little puppy-faced flyer 😍
A first for us! Rehabilitators don't normally see these guys in rehab a whole lot as they tend to nest in swampy areas. This fledgling Red-winged Blackbird was cat-caught, which resulted in a ruptured air sac. Luckily he was promptly brought to us to begin antibiotics and receive treatment for the ruptured air sac. Cats carry a bacteria that is deadly to birds, which means cat-caught birds must receive antibiotics within 24 hrs for them to have a chance at battling against the bacteria. Thankfully this little one received the antibiotics in time, the ruptured air sac healed and it was transferred to Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary, who luckily have two older Red-winged Blackbirds in care at the moment for this one to grow up with
It's been an incredibly busy season for us so far! Our second large group of fledglings are about a week away from heading back to Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre to spend time in outdoor aviaries before their release, the youngest fledglings have been moved out of the nestling room and into large flight enclosures and the nestling room has been constantly being filled with new arrivals! We've also had a handful of nestlings and fledglings that we've transferred to Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary for further care with species of their own kind, including a Red-winged Blackbird, another Robin, a Mourning dove and two nestling Grackles. Many thanks to my hubby, Ben, who is always ready and willing to transport birdie's wherever they need to be, gather supplies for the birds we have in care and generally be my second set of hands when needed

Important Message from a fellow rehab centre, Kawartha Wildlife Centre If there’s one thing you can count on the internet for, it’s perpetuating bad, unfiltered advice. With the increase in temperatures, there’s been an explosion of gypsy moth caterpillars showing
Isn't it always lunch time when you get 42 lunches a day? 😂

Little muppet
Yesterday we said farewell to our oldest group of 25 fledglings that were transferred back to Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre to spend their final stages of rehabilitation in outdoor enclosures :) We're still super busy with the new fledgling groups that have been moved out of the nestling room and into larger enclosures to practice their perching, flying and foraging skills.... and the nestling room is once again filling up!
AWESOME 'POSSUM SCARF Waffle!!!
Your chance has finally arrived to scoop one of WRN's popular 'possum scarves for only a 5$ donation.
Here at Birdie B&B the majority of our songbirds are placed on a live insect diet and receive feeds every 20-30 minutes from dawn til dusk! As you can imagine it's one of our biggest expenses throughout nesting season and we've already gone through over 30,000 mealworms this season! All proceeds from this Birdie B&B fundraiser will go directly towards to fulfilling the nutritional needs of the wild songbirds in our care
Our oldest group of fledglings are working hard on all their bird skills and many are eating on their own, but I still am met with this reception for handouts while filling dishes 😂 It will be just a bit longer and they'll be set to go into an outdoor aviary before release :)
The fledgling sparrows are all doing well and have been practicing their perching, foraging and escaping skills 😆
Nestling room update! 🐣We're almost at capacity in the nestling room and this past weekend we also transported this fledgling Robin, a fledgling Grackle and a Pigeon all for care at Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary :)
The young sparrows moved into a larger enclosure today :) They are quite the little escape artists! 😆
This afternoon we're sending a big Birdie B&B thank-you to the KLAWS group for their generous donation
Great idea from our friends at FLAP for protecting against window collisions!
Good morning from the Ansom St crew! These guys arrived five days ago, found after a boat was moved from storage and with a severe mite infestation. Underweight and anemic, they were in pretty rough shape. After days of doating, mite treatments and a bath to clean them, they are now looking fab! They may be fragile, but they are so resilient and have such fight!

The nestling room is filling up again! Two new nests full transferred to us from Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre yesterday :)
Quick video of our fledgling enclosure while refilling dishes, click if you dare 😂 Yes, they all got handouts as you can tell by their chubby featherbutts!
Many of the fledglings are eating live insects on their own now 🎉 but some still line up for handouts 🐦 Some are more pushier than others, I'm looking at you in the front there! 😂

We're getting busier as the season progresses and could use some assistance with large flight enclosures :) If you can't help us with a donation at this time, please simply share our post or fundraising link ;) The little birdie's send big thanks!

The fledglings enjoying the bath :)
It's been a big day for the fledglings we're fostering for Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre! They all moved into the largest of our enclosures to build their flight muscles, to forage for live insects, to soak up some sun and to bathe lots, which encourages preening and the distribution of natural 'oils' used to protect their feathers. Their next step will be into an outdoor aviary at Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre before they are ready for release :)

Today's nestling update: the marina and Ansom St. groups are both doing well and the wee sparrow is healing up fabulously from it's injuries :)
Three new additions to the incubator today! This nest was discovered in a boat after it had been moved from winter storage. A bit dehydrated and in need of a mite treatment, but all doing well now!

A couple of young pigeons we have in care at the moment :) They're such sweet babies <3 We've had over 90 birds come through our doors for care so far this season, our busiest year yet! If you'd like to help us with our efforts, we've recently updated our Amazon wishlist. Vitamins and puppy pads are at the top of the list this week ;) https://www.amazon.ca/hz/wishlist/ls/2OW667IZX2FK8?ref_=wl_share

Baby bird season has officially begun for us and we're on the 20 minute feed merry-go-round :) Before and after, of one of their many feeds <3 These babies were transferred to us from Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre and we'll be assisting them with their non-native songbirds this season when we have space available :) It's of the utmost importance if you find wildlife in need of assistance that you contact your local licensed wildlife rehabilitator for advice. If able to contain, place in a covered box with air flow (and a source of heat if an unfeathered baby), do not offer food or water unless instructed so do so by the wildlife rehabilitator. http://www.ontariowildliferescue.ca/wildlifecentres/
