This week's class was tough. I watched videos that showed how aversive 'training' techniques actually effect learning. Watching an animal refuse a food reward, pace, attempt escape and then freeze because it knew a punishment (shock) might come was heartbreaking.

Here is how I am spending my morning; learning the interplay between neurology and behavior.

I have decided to offer free sessions for people who have suffered domestic violence with their dogs.
Dogs get PTSD and trauma responses too. The behaviors seen can be reactivity, urinating/defecating in the house and when meeting new people, shaking, hiding and fear.
If your abuser abused your dog, I will teach you how to help your dog feel safe and have confidence again.
I am a judgement free zone. I have been there.
"The Link"
"There is a significant connection between domestic violence and animal cruelty, often referred to as "the Link". Abusers often threaten or harm their victims' pets to control them, keep victims from leaving, or to punish them for leaving. In one survey, 71% of domestic violence victims reported that their abuser also targeted pets. Multiple studies have found that from 49% to 71% of battered women reported that their pets had been threatened, harmed, or killed by their partners. Pet-friendly domestic violence shelters can provide housing and services for dogs and other pets."
Here is the next course I will be taking. This one is being offered through the Association for Professional Dog Training International while I have learned the basics of this. This is a more in-depth exploration of this fascinating topic.
Did you know that when your dog is in a negative, heightened emotional state (EG: fear, stress from pain) they do not learn as well?
In this stressed state, the learning center of the brain takes the back seat and allows the instinctive/reactive survival brain to take the wheel and steer. This leads to impulsive responses without much, or any, thought.
This is the answer to the question: Why do dogs that attack porcupines never learn? Because they are not in a learning state of mind once they experience the pain of being quilled.
Understanding how dog's biology affects behavior helps me to be a better dog trainer. I can look at behaviors and understand the possible motivations behind those behaviors. Once I understand the motivations, I can find alternate behaviors that work for both dog and human.

Everyone should have access to humane dog training with an educated, experienced, science based dog trainer, in order to keep their dog at home. My business was founded on this principle. I keep my prices as low as possible to achieve this.
How would you interpret this behavior? (answer below)
This Husky is exhibiting an often misunderstood Husky trait. They 'talk'. A LOT! They make noises many people translate as being aggression when it is, in fact, communication. This Husky wants out and they want out now. The rest of their body language holds the key to properly interpreting this behavior.

In honor of hump day:
Why do dogs hump?
I know, it can be so embarrassing! Understanding why dogs hump can help in coming up with a behavior modification plan. It can be a response to excitement, stress, too much energy, boredom, a medical condition, or even a way to get attention. Rarely, hu***ng can be a sign of dominance when combined with aggressive behaviors.
Have you ever had a dog that humps?

Our Story
I love animals. For as long as I can remember I have been completely at ease with animals and could understand and teach them easily. I only recently realized that not everyone has the same understanding! I opened For P.E.T.S., Pawsitive Education, Training & Services, first and foremost so that I could help pet owners and their dogs. I want to help you have the dog that YOU want, the one that makes YOU happy by behaving within the boundaries that YOU set.
My specialty is pet dog training. I am all about the bond between animal and human. I have never participated in obedience competitions with my dogs. Nor have I shown my horses. I didn’t participate in sports in school or ride during 4-H shows when I was a teen. I am not a competitive person. I also don’t agree with many of the forceful and often painful techniques that I have seen used to make sure that competing animals win.
I teach dogs to follow the rules and have manners while still allowing them to do the things they need to do in order to be happy dogs. What are those things? Sniffing the ground while on walks, being included in family activities, playing, exploring their environment and being allowed to meet and interact with other people if they want to!
Why am I offering professional dog training now? Because the field has had many advances over the last two decades that have changed how dogs are trained! I am so excited by these changes! I always hated seeing dogs cringe when their leash was je**ed or they were thrown to the floor in a ‘dominance roll’. I learned to train when physical punishments and painful management tools (think shock & prong collars and yes, I used them because that’s what MY teachers told me to do!) were the norm. I hated it. I finally went against the norm, trained my way and kept it as a ‘hobby’; something I did for fun or to help others.
I began learning to train dogs with a police K9 scent work trainer in 1975. I also train my own dogs, including 3 service dogs, friend's & Family's dogs and helped with training questions while a Veterinary Technician. I have worked with puppies, adult dogs, resource guarding dogs, nervous dogs hyper dogs and, well, you get the idea.
I also offer a wide variety of pet care services. I offer force-free puppy and dog training, work-day check-ins/dog walks, pet sitting, small farm sitting, pet taxi and concierge services and owner education.
I attended Animal Science Classes at U.N.H. Thompson School of Applied Science in 1991-1992 and Worked under Thomas Moon, DVM and Ann Florio DVM at Rochester Veterinary Clinic, learning Veterinary Technician skills, during the same time period. I have continued to expand my education and experience taking continuing education courses in equine, canine and feline nutrition, advanced dog training, canine first aid, and CPR, and by working for Cocheco Veterinary Hospital and Myhre Equine Clinic since 2011.
