De chihuahua is een van de kleinste honden ter wereld.

Hij dankt zijn naam aan de Mexicaanse provincie Chihuahua waar het ras in 1850 werd ontdekt. Het is het oudste hondenras op het Amerikaanse continent. Pas aan het eind van de jaren 1800 brachten toeristen de hondjes mee naar Europa.
