Not all puppy biting is innocent play

🦴 Your 8-week-old puppy bites during feeding time
🎾 Puppy clamps down when you try to move them
🚫 Biting happens when they don't get their way
âš¡ Puppy growls while biting (not playful noise)
🎯 Biting stops immediately when puppy gets what they want
🔄 Puppy repeats biting behavior in same situations

Last month I watched a client struggle with what she thought was "normal puppy behavior."

Her 10-week-old Golden Retriever would bite her hands every time she tried to pick up his food bowl.

Not gentle mouthing. Hard bites that left marks.

"He's teething," she kept saying. "All puppies do this."

But this wasn't teething discomfort or playful exploration.

This was manipulation.

The puppy had learned that biting made humans back away and leave his food alone.

The difference between normal puppy biting and controlling behavior:

Normal puppy biting happens during play, exploration, or teething discomfort. The puppy bites everything - your hands, furniture, toys.

Controlling biting happens in specific situations when the puppy wants something. The biting has purpose and stops when the puppy gets their way.

You see this behavior in puppies as young as 8 weeks old.

The scary part? Most owners reward this behavior without knowing it.

When your puppy bites and you pull away or give them space, you've taught them that biting works.

Three signs your puppy is manipulating you:

Biting happens in the same situations repeatedly
Biting stops when puppy gets what they want
Puppy seeks eye contact while biting

This behavior escalates fast if you don't address it.

The 10-week-old Golden? Within two weeks of proper training, the controlling bites stopped completely.

Normal puppy mouthing continued during play time, which is exactly what we wanted.

Does your puppy bite in specific situations or during general play?

1. How do you handle your dog's jumping and biting behavior?

For me:
Stay calm and reward four paws on ground.

Why?
• Dogs mirror your energy level and emotional state.
• Yelling increases their excitement and problematic behaviors.
• Calm training builds better long-term behavioral foundations.

Train with patience.

2. What energy do you bring during puppy training sessions?

For me:
Low, controlled energy with clear expectations.

Why?
• High energy triggers prey drive and increased biting.
• Dramatic reactions encourage more fighting and chaos.
• Consistent calmness teaches dogs proper greeting behaviors.

Energy affects outcomes.

3. How do you teach your dog proper greetings?

For me:
Reward calm behavior around people consistently.

Why?
• Dogs learn jumping gets no positive attention.
• All four paws rule creates predictable expectations.
• Calm greetings transfer to meeting strangers successfully.

Consistency builds habits.

4. What mistake do most new dog owners make?

For me:
Matching their dog's excited energy during corrections.

Why?
• Yelling creates more stimulation and behavioral problems.
• Dogs interpret loud voices as play invitations.
• Emotional reactions reinforce the wrong behaviors completely.

Stay composed always.

5. How do you see puppy training affecting adulthood?

For me:
Early calmness training prevents future behavioral issues.

Why?
• Puppies who learn impulse control become calmer adults.
• Proper greetings eliminate jumping on guests later.
• Foundation training saves years of correction work.

Invest early now.

🎃Think your dog's going to act like a hellhound on Halloween?

Here's the reality: barking at every doorbell, lunging at kids in costumes, and losing control around noise and chaos—that's not cute.

That's stress. And it's preventable.

Halloween doesn't have to be a nightmare for you or your dog.

With proper training, your pup can handle the doorbell ringing, strangers approaching, and all the wild energy that comes with the holiday.

You need to build impulse control, work on threshold training, and create calm behavior around distractions.

That's how you set your dog up for success.

Train your hellhound, You'll both be better for it.
