Most dog trainers get this backwards...

🐕 They slap a prong collar on day one
🚫 Skip the foundational work
⚡ Go straight to corrections
🔄 Wonder why dogs shut down or get reactive

Here's what balanced training looks like:

Food comes first. Not as bribery. As communication.

The leash becomes your safety net. Your dog sees a squirrel 20 feet away. Six-foot leash keeps him close. He gets bored. Turns to you.

You have treats ready.

Now you have his attention.

This is the difference between tools used right and tools used wrong.

Aversive trainers skip steps. They correct before they connect.

Balanced trainers build the relationship first.

Think about your last training session. Did you bring rewards before corrections? Did you set your dog up to succeed?

The tool doesn't make the trainer. The preparation does.

Your dog wants to work with you. Give him reasons to choose you over the environment.

Start with food. Use the leash as management. Build engagement before you build rules.

The foundation determines everything that follows.

Interview your dog trainer

Here's what happened when I started asking the right questions:

🚪 "Where does my dog stay during training?"
"Oh, you don't need to see that. Insurance won't let us show you."
RED FLAG.

🧠 "What training methods do you use?"
"We have our own techniques."
RED FLAG.

📚 "Do you know the four quadrants of operant conditioning?"
Blank stare.
RED FLAG.

🔍 "What's classical conditioning?"
"We focus on results, not theory."
RED FLAG.

Here's what separates real trainers from pretenders:

They explain the science behind every technique.

They read your dog's behavior and tell you exactly what's causing it.

They welcome facility tours.

They discuss insecurity, anxiety, and stress signals - not just "good" and "bad" behavior.

Your trainer should look at your dog and say: "Your dog is showing anxious tendencies here" or "This behavior stems from insecurity."

Not: "Your dog is just being stubborn."

The difference between a qualified trainer and a fake one?

Real trainers educate you.

Fake ones keep you in the dark.

Ask the right questions.

If a trainer claims to have worked somewhere, call that place and run a reference check.

Your dog depends on it.
