Wandin Vet Clinic has a nursing position available for Feb/March 2025! 💫

We are seeking:
🐾 One Cert IV qualified veterinary nurse, for a full time or part time position (full time preferred)

Wandin Vet Clinic is a mixed practice based in the Yarra Valley, Victoria. We have a team of seven veterinarians and 13 veterinary nurses. Our nurses are encouraged to be hands-on, meaning lots of opportunities for catheter placement, blood collection, scrubbing in to assist with surgeries and journeys out on house calls.

We are a very cohesive team and we are proud of our positive and fun workplace culture, which is often commented on by our clients and placements students. Wandin Vets is a cheery place to work!
Being a privately owned practice, our practice owners work within and manage the business, which means no pressure from practice managers, no KPI’s or hard sell tactics.

Purpose built building
Ascend management software
Computed Radiography with automatic processing
Idexx Procyte, Catalyst, Snapshot Dx and Sedivue machines
Mindray ultrasound machine
icare Tonovet tonometer
Vet1 multi-parameter patient monitors, Bair huggers, Braun fluid pumps etc.
Plenty of surgical equipment, which allows us to perform TPLOs, orthopaedics including fracture repair and external fixation surgeries, rotational skin flaps and other complex soft tissue surgeries. We pride ourselves on performing many intricate surgeries in house.

🥵 H E A T S T R O K E 🥵
Summer is here and the heat is just beginning. Here are a few ideas to help your furry friend keep their cool!
😎 Provide plenty of water in two bowls, just in case one is knocked over 🪣
😎 Allow access to cool, well ventilated and shady areas all day 🌳
😎 Close your window blinds to keep the sun out and help your pets stay cooler inside the home 🏠
😎 If your pets are inside, leave the A/C or fans on for them. Circulating air helps them to stay cool (the only way dogs can cool themselves is by panting and using evaporation of moisture from the tongue to cool down. They don’t sweat like we do!) 🪭
😎 Fill a paddling pool or clam shell and take your dog for a splash 🏊🏼
😎 Play with a hose! 💦
😎 Buy a cooling vest or bandana for your dog🦺

🦴 Food 🦴
😎 Add ice blocks to their water bowl 🧊
😎 Feed frozen food - delicious and cooling! 😋
😎 Fill an empty ice cream container with water, drop in a few dry dog crunchies or treats, and freeze ❄️
😎 Give you pet a frozen water/drink bottle or frozen towel as a “cold block” to sit on 🥶

🚗 Travel 🚗
😎 Being at home is better than in a hot car 🚘
😎 If a car ride is a must, use a sun shade and the A/C ❄️
😎 Don't leave your pet in the car - they can die in 4-6 minutes with heat stroke ☠️

🏃‍♀️‍➡️ Exercise 🏃‍♂️‍➡️
😎 Do it early morning or late at night, when it’s cooler 🌅
😎 Take it easy and avoid high energy games e.g ball chasing 🥎
😎 Who should be extra careful?- brachycephalic short nosed dogs (eg pugs, French bulldogs), older animals, animals with thick coats and ones that originally come from cold climates 🐕

🥵 What does heat stroke look like? 🥵
Rapid panting, tiredness, wobbly gait, drooling, muscle twitching or collapse.
🥵 If this happens what should I do? 🥵
Wet them down with cool (not freezing cold) water, offer cool (not cold) water to drink, pop a fan on them and call us immediately!

Waratah invests lots of time, money and energy into the care and rehabilitation of Yarra Valley wildlife, so wouldn’t it be lovely if we could all give back to this amazing service! 💕

Rabbit calicivirus vaccination- it could save your bunny’s life 🐇

Recently we had a couple of rabbits brought into the clinic that had passed away at home, without obvious prior signs of illness. These bunnies had been living within the Yarra Valley, and not travelled elsewhere. ✈️
In these circumstances we think that 'rabbit calicivirus' is the most likely cause. ‘Rabbit calicivirus' is a viral disease. 🦠
The virus spreads easily within the wild and pet rabbit populations, and can be spread via direct contact with infected rabbits or their urine/faeces/saliva, via equipment and clothing, and by biting insects 🦟 🪰.
Animals can die suddenly, but can also show signs of fever, restlessness, lethargy, poor appetite and bleeding from the nose. 🤒 🩸
Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment for rabbit calicivirus, and the mortality rate is around 70-90%. ☠️

The important thing to know is that there is a vaccine available, that can help to protect your rabbit. Ring the clinic to make a time for an annual vaccination. If you have a young bunny, we recommend their first vaccination at 8-10 weeks of age, with a booster one month later, and annually thereafter. 💉

Other things you can do to help includes:
🐰Keeping you rabbit indoors.
🐰Rabbit-proof your backyard to prevent access by wild rabbits.
🐰Regularly decontaminate equipment and materials including cages, hutches, bowls etc, with either 10% bleach, 10% sodium hydroxide or F10 disinfectant.
🐰Limit contact between and handling of unfamiliar pet rabbits.
🐰Decontaminate hands, shoes and clothing after handling other people’s rabbits.
🐰Control fleas (consider products such as Revolution spot-on).
🐰Control insects (especially flies) as much as possible both indoors and outdoors. Bug-proof outside hutches with mesh.
🐰Remove uneaten food on a daily basis.

Lastly a few points on keeping rabbits healthy…
Remember at least 80% of their diet should be hay (oaten hay is best), 20% should be vegetables (dark green ones are great) and only a small amount should be pellets (Oxbow are the best ones on the market). 🌾🥬🥦🫑🥕

Do you have the time and space in your life for an energetic furry friend? Because Harley needs a home!
Harley is a very social dog that adores people and gets along well with other dogs and cats. He is a high energy fellow that thrives on mental stimulation and exercise. Harley would be best suited to living somewhere with space to run, with someone that has the time to provide lots of mental stimulation and exercise, or in a household where people are home (perhaps someone working from home or working part time).
Harley loves balls and loves food, which is great for training. He will sometimes resource guard his food and toys, and has been known to eat naughty things in the past (both food and non-food items), so an understanding of how to manage these aspects of Harley’s personality would be required.
Harley has not spent much time around small children, so he would be best living in a household with children aged 10 or older.

This is Peaches! 🍑
Peaches is looking for a new home as her owner sadly passed away.
She is a 10 year old female speyed domestic short hair. Peaches is a talkative and affectionate girl.
Peaches has always lived in a single-cat household and so she would need to be rehomed somewhere with no other cats. She has not been behaviour tested around dogs.
If you think you could provide a furrever home for this lovely girl, please contact us!
