Izzy came into my life as a gift from my parents for graduating with my Bachelors of Science Degree. I was hesitant as to if I wanted a miniature dachshund because my parents have had miniature dachshunds (six total over the years) and I didn’t know if I wanted to follow the pattern. After seeing a photo of Izzy on http://www.northedendachshunds.com/ (The same breeder my parents got their most rec

ent dachshund) I was SOLD! Her baby blue eyes stole my little heart and her speckled nose was just so kissable, so I knew my choice, she was the one I wanted to call mine. As she grew I noticed something very wrong with her, and I didn’t know how to accept it. Izzy never responded to her name, loud noises, anything, and around the age of 4 months, I realized that Izzy was born deaf. My heart was broken, as I felt that she would never be able to hear my voice, hear the birds outside, or experience life as a normal dog. After the vet confirmed my suspicions, I decided that it wouldn’t pay to mope around and feel sorry for Izzy, but do just the opposite. Through Izzy’s deafness I bettered myself and taught her sign language to help her understand what I wanted from her. Now that she’s a year old [September 4th, 2014] it doesn’t faze me that she has a disability, and the overwhelming amount of patience and responsibility I’ve gained is nothing compared to who I was before she came into my life.
