On the first day, there was a gradual start with minimal community support. However, day two, which took place on Saturday, 18th November, commenced with enthusiasm. Queues of community members, accompanied by their pets, eagerly waited at the door. The dedicated care team operated seamlessly, resembling a well-oiled machine, and successfully sterilised 104 animals in a single day.
This Mass Animal Sterilisation program is funded by The City of Cape Town and executed by various organisations within the Cape Animal Welfare Forum.

Thank you to Virbac South Africa Farm for always donating so generously towards our sterilisation events. With Virbac Effipro tick and flea prevention we are able to send each animal home with protection against tick-borne diseases.

What an amazing team effort that led to an incredibly successful day! 86 animals were sterilised in Nomzamo, preventing countless unwanted litters and future suffering. Five highly skilled vets and five dedicated organisations came together to ensure the day ran smoothly. This initiative was spearheaded by Dogs Day Out South Africa and received support from Ebervet Community Veterinary Care, TOP - The Outreach Program , HART - Helderberg Animal Rescue Team - Western Cape , and PETS - Pets Empowerment In Townships Western Cape
Being part of such a remarkable day is truly special. Everyone worked tirelessly, all driven by their passion, making it hardly feel like "work."
A heartfelt thank you to Dogs Day Out South Africa for initiating and funding this event. Gratitude also goes to Talisman Hire Strand for their consistent willingness to donate lighting for our Steri days, and to Jimmy's Trailer Hire for their generous trailer donation. Most importantly, a massive thank you to every volunteer who put in countless hours of hard work, not only on the day but also in preparation.

The first day of our involvement in the MASP, which is funded by the City of Cape Town and executed by various organizations within the Cape Animal Welfare Forum, got off to a slow start. Unfortunately, we faced numerous "no-shows." Nevertheless, we persevered with what animals we could collect, and gradually, word began to spread. People started bringing their animals for sterilisation.
By the end of the day, we had successfully sterilised 39 animals. This accomplishment is significant considering the initial challenges we encountered in securing the community's cooperation. Encouraging people to register their animals for sterilisation was met with resistance, but we remain optimistic that the success of day one will motivate more people to participate in the next two days of the programme.
A heartfelt thanks to our invaluable supporters:
- Jimmy Trailer, for his unwavering support in providing trailers whenever we needed them.
- Talisman Strand, for their consistent sponsorship of the much-needed lights.
- Animal Welfare, especially Inspector Kyle, for their essential assistance throughout this initiative.
- HART, who generously covered the cost of the hall for us. Your contributions have made a significant impact on our efforts.
On Sunday, the 24th of September, we commemorated Heritage Day in a truly magnificent manner. The sight of individuals hailing from diverse backgrounds, uniting in the pursuit of a common cause, was nothing short of heartwarming. Our shared passion for a vital mission - sterilisation - brought us together, reinforcing the importance of this practice.
Sterilising your pets holds immense significance, extending beyond the prevention of unwanted offspring. It is also a crucial measure to safeguard these animals from potentially fatal diseases.
Collectively, we achieved a significant milestone by successfully sterilising 47 dogs and cats hailing from underprivileged communities. This accomplishment stands as a testament to our dedication and commitment.
The weather, though initially posing a challenge, proved to be a mere obstacle that we skillfully navigated before the impending rain. The skies remained clear throughout the morning, and as we ushered in our final patient, the gentle drizzle began.

Our Community Veterinary Care (CVC) team has been sterilising pets for Stanford Animal Welfare Society (SAWS) for some years now but this was the first steri clinic held in our brand new EberVet building. The building currently houses SAWS' charity shop but we're planning an EberVet Vetshop and clinic there too. Thanks to great teamwork with SAWS, we were able to sterilise 18 dogs and 8 cats and look forward to many more in this great venue.

We went live at our mass sterilisation clinic in Sir Lowry's Pass Village! We plan to do more than 60 Pitbulls today and to treat them for ticks, fleas and worms. Walk with us as we show you what gets done on such a special day.
Demodectic mange is caused by this microscopic creepy crawly called a mite. It is very important to visit a vet for an accurate diagnosis if your pet is scratching because mange symptoms can resemble other skin diseases. The vet will perform a skin scraping and then place it under a microscope. If this crocodile-like image appears, along with severe itching, crusty skin and patches of hair loss your pet definitely has demodectic mange. Thankfully, treatment is usually simple.
If you are cooking a delicious turkey, and your dog is looking at you with longing eyes, refrain from giving him bones. The only thing that bones are good at is breaking teeth. Bones are the most common objects that break dogs’ teeth. If the tooth breaks into the root, it can cause significant pain and discomfort. It can also lead to tooth root infection and even bone infection. Follow this link for more information: www.ebervet.com/bones-for-your-d…t-encourage-them/
It is extremely traumatic for an animal when he or she is lost, particularly if the neighbourhood is not known. There is also the danger of traffic and confrontations with other animals. We have noticed over the years that this happens quite often during the festive season too. In this video, Dr Ingrid from Country Animal Clinic demonstrates how quick and painless inserting a microchip is. Today is the first of many hot days to come as summer is just around the corner. Warmer weather means that snakes are reemerging. Snakebites are common in South Africa and many dogs are bitten because they will attack a snake. Most dogs don’t understand that snakes can be deadly and will either attack a snake or at the very least try to sniff it or poke their nose down its hole. Knowing what to do when your snake is bitten, could save his life.
We have compiled a list of resources to help you.

EberVet Community Veterinary Care veterinary surgeon, Dr Hilldidge Beer, who will be performing the pet sterilisations at our Nieu Bethesda outreach clinic this coming week, yesterday drew the winner of Die Waenhuis/Oude Pastorie competition! And the winner is ... Juliette Illingworth! Congratulations, Juliette, and thank you to everyone who entered. Every cent from this competition will help us sterilise and provide medical treatment for pets from impoverished homes in this tiny Karoo village.
Listen to what EberVet CEO Dr Hilldidge Beer has to say about pets from impoverished homes. If you'd like to donate to this cause, simply go to our backabuddy page at https://www.backabuddy.co.za/nieu-bethesda-spayathon. It couldn't be easier to help an animal in need
Another successful day of making a difference!
On the 16th of July, we went into Chris Nissen Park to vaccinate, deworm and treat animals for ticks and fleas. We also gave bread, soup, and sweets to more than 200 kids in the community. We are so grateful to the many generous donors and sponsors who supported our Community Impacts Project and we look forward to the next opportunity to make a difference!
