*** RECLAIMED BY OWNER ***
This poor guy. He’s 5 years old and has been bounced around like a ping pong ball. MUNCHEN is a sweet, friendly, social guy who wiggles along and wants to greet everyone he meets. He didn’t ask or deserve to be picked up and put down like a toy. His most recent owner had him only 2 ½ weeks and dumped him for their allergies and asthma. If you KNOW you have this condition, why do this to this poor dog? Munchen is a wonderful little guy who you can’t help but fall in love with – just look at that face! Those wrinkles and folds, and those sweet little paws tucked together under his chubby body. Munchen has lived with, or at least been around, 5 children ages 3 – 17 years of age. He is tolerant of children. He is tolerant of strangers. He is tolerant of familiar dogs. He is perfectly trained to wee wee pads, he is crate trained up to 2 hours, and it seems that he never, not EVER, got walked! Why not? He lived for those two weeks in the house, and if he “paced” it was probably due to never getting any exercise. He is a low energy guy, he even fell asleep under a desk at the shelter and started snoring! But he still needs walks! Munchen could benefit from trade up games to learn to share his food. He needs to find a home where he can finally hang his halter, and spend the rest of his life being loved. If you are an experienced foster or adopter who loves cranky, sweet, affectionate, but entirely lovable bulldogs, then this is your guy! HURRY TO MESSAGE OUR PAGE to save his life.

SHELTER ASSESSMENT SUMMARIES - Date of assessment:: 8/16/2024
Summary:: Munchen came into the care center as an owner surrender, in the prior home Munchen is reported to bark/growl when disturbed or startled. Before his assessment began Munchen was fitted with a harness, remaining relaxed, wagging his tail, and seeking affection throughout. However, the handler realizes the harness is too small and starts to remove it. As the harness is being unbuckled, Munchen suddenly lunges at the handler's stomach, gripping the handler's shirt in his mouth. The second handler intervenes, pulling Munchen away until the shirt is released from his grip. Munchen is then firmly led back to his kennel, growling on the way back, and snarling and lunging at the kennel door upon entry. The handler removes the leash and steps away from the kennel door. Due to this behavior believe he is not a candidate for a behavior assessment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES
8/18/24: Munchen was leashed with ease and walked to the BA room. Handler clipped drag leash to back of harness quickly and Munchen explored the room eating any treats he found on the floor. When Munchen walked under the desk handler would toss treats to increase distance due to known handling sensitivity. Munchen ate all treats offered to him. When handler was across the room, Munchen went back under the desk and lay down. He appeared completely relaxed and fell asleep, snoring loudly. When a second handler entered the room Munchen approached with a neutral body and sniffed them. Munchen was returned to kennel by handler 2.
8/16/24: Munchen is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body, and is easily leashed and brought to the assessment room. Munchen is heavily panting inside the room and lays down to cool himself off, the handler offers him water to which he takes but walks away and lays down. Munchen began his assessment and is fitted with a harness. Muchen throughout process is loose, tail wagging and leaning in for petting. The hander notices that the harness will not fit and begins to unbuckle it, as the assessor is unbuckling the harness clip, Munchen without warning lunges towards the handlers stomach, biting down onto the handlers shirt and holding on. The second handler pulls Munchen away to which the shirt stretches and is finally let go after Munchen had less of ahold. Munchen was stiff armed and brought back to his kennel where he begins to growl on leash going back, and when going into kennel turns around, snarling and lunging at the kennel door. The handler takes the leash off and walks away from the kennel door.

No children (under 13)- Due to his behavior challenges we recommend Munchen is placed in an adult-only home at this time
Place with a New Hope partner- Munchen was surrendered to the care center by his previous owner, who reported that he a couch potato and very smart. At the care center Munchen displayed concerning behavior during his assessment, Munchen was outfitted with a harness and remained calm, tail wagging, and seeking affection. However, when the handler noticed the harness was too small and began to remove it, Munchen lunged at the handler's stomach, catching the handler's shirt in his teeth. A second handler quickly stepped in, pulling Munchen away until he let go of the shirt. Munchen was then escorted back to his kennel, growling along the way and snarling as he lunged at the kennel door. After Munchen was secured inside, the handler detached the leash and moved away from the door. Munchen is available through one of our new home partners.
Potential challenges:
Resource guarding
Handling/touch sensitivity
Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,
Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:
Resource guarding- In the prior home it is reported that Munchen will growl or hard bark when his food is touched. It is essential to work on desensitizing him to having his possessions handled by using techniques like trading up for higher-value items and practicing "drop it" and "leave it". Please see handout on Resource guarding.
Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Anxiety- Munchden exhibits signs of general anxiety, such as pacing, whining, and restlessness. Additionally, Munchden is reported to bark and growl when disturbed during rest or sleep, or when startled. At the care center, Munchen exhibited concerning behavior during his assessment. Initially calm with a wagging tail and seeking affection while being harnessed, Munchen's demeanor changed when the handler realized the harness was too tight and attempted to remove it. Munchen reacted by lunging at the handler's stomach and grabbing the handler's shirt with his teeth. Another handler intervened promptly, pulling Munchen away until he released the shirt. Munchen was then led back to his kennel, growling and snarling, even lunging at the kennel door. Once Munchen was safely inside, the handler removed the leash and stepped back from the door. It is crucial to proceed with patience and allow the dog the autonomy to withdraw from any social interaction if needed. Dogs should never feel pressured to engage with situations or handling that make them uncomfortable. Respect for the dog's boundaries is paramount, ensuring that they have the freedom to approach new people or situations at their own pace.Munchen may thrive in a tranquil and serene home environment initially, where he can gradually acclimate to his new surroundings with patience and understanding. Please see handout on Handling/touch sensitivity/decompression period/generalized anxiety.
