Today Kate found a lovely poem she never saw before, written by the passionate poet, Pablo Neruda. Keep your handkerchief close ...🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

A Dog Has Died: BY PABLO NERUDA

My dog has died.
I buried him in the garden
next to a rusted old machine.

Some day I'll join him right there,
but now he's gone with his shaggy coat,
his bad manners and his cold nose,
and I, the materialist, who never believed
in any promised heaven in the sky
for any human being,
I believe in a heaven I'll never enter.
Yes, I believe in a heaven for all dogdom
where my dog waits for my arrival
waving his fan-like tail in friendship.

Ai, I'll not speak of sadness here on earth,
of having lost a companion
who was never servile.
His friendship for me, like that of a porcupine
withholding its authority,
was the friendship of a star, aloof,
with no more intimacy than was called for,
with no exaggerations:
he never climbed all over my clothes
filling me full of his hair or his mange,
he never rubbed up against my knee
like other dogs obsessed with s*x.

No, my dog used to gaze at me,
paying me the attention I need,
the attention required
to make a vain person like me understand
that, being a dog, he was wasting time,
but, with those eyes so much purer than mine,
he'd keep on gazing at me
with a look that reserved for me alone
all his sweet and shaggy life,
always near me, never troubling me,
and asking nothing.

Ai, how many times have I envied his tail
as we walked together
on the shores of the sea
in the lonely winter of Isla Negra
where the wintering birds filled the sky
and my hairy dog was jumping about
full of the voltage of the sea's movement:
my wandering dog, sniffing away
with his golden tail held high,
face to face with the ocean's spray.

Joyful, joyful, joyful,
as only dogs know how to be happy
with only the autonomy
of their shameless spirit.

There are no good-byes
for my dog who has died,
and we don't now and
never did lie to each other.

This moment was captured when a hungry stray dog watched people buy food from my stand, each exchanging money for a meal. After observing them for a while, the dog came up to me with a small leaf in its mouth, looking at me with the most hopeful eyes. It was as if he believed the leaf was enough to buy him some food, mirroring what he'd seen humans do.

His innocence moved me, and I gladly gave him something to eat in return. It reminded me that even animals try to understand the world around them, often in ways we never expect. This is a beautiful example of how kindness can transcend all boundaries—even between humans and animals. 🐾❤️

Old and lonely, I thought a dog would complete my life.
I found him wandering, dirty, hungry, I caressed him, he followed me without fear.
Now this is my dog, I am his owner.
I talk to him, he lick my hands back.
"We won't have anything to eat tomorrow, pension is over, we'll have to wait!"
This blessed day arrives, lined up with other retirees, the booklet wrinkled by time, clenched in my hands, awaiting my turn. Fido is happily wagging his tail.
He knows today we going to eat more and a little better.
it's winter time yet My house without fire is cold. Staying close and keeping me warm. The beginning of spring finds us united to thank the sun, while a prayer is born from my heart: "Thank you, Lord, for creating the dog... ❤

The owner of this cat noticed that he would take a piece of food in this mouth and then leave the house every afternoon. Curious, he decided to follow him one day and found out that he was taking the food to this poor doggy who had been abandoned and chained to a post by his owner.
I adopted and now both are best friend’s ❤️

There's something I need to talk about, and I'm going to try to address it as sensitively as I can.
Our sanctuary was established as a safe haven for senior dogs who have found themselves in unavoidable situations, facing health crisis or homelessness in their twilight years. We have taken in dogs from shelters, strays, owners who are unable to care for them due to their own health, or sadly at the time of their own death.
Owners who would absolutely do anything to change the circumstances so they could keep their dog, but are in unavoidable turmoil and situations outside of their control and the choice has been taken from them.
We have provided sanctuary to dogs who need us, because they have nowhere else to go.

Recently, there has been an uptick in owner requests from people who are missing the point of what we do. We have had requests to surrender nine dogs in the last forty-eight hours. If you have a dog, that you have loved and cared for their entire life, and now just can't bring yourself to handle the inconveniences that come with your dog being a senior...we are not the answer. I don't know how people can forget the faithfulness their dog has provided its entire life, and as their body starts to fail and they need their people the most, they would choose to simply surrender their dog instead of supporting them to the end.

As dogs age, as with any living being, their body starts to deteriorate. Organ function, potty function, vision, hearing, mobility...every life has an expiration date, and as they draw nearer to the end, things just don't work like they used to. At absolutely no fault of their own, you have to consider how the dog is feeling after years of "doing the right thing", that first time they don't make it to the door to potty. Will your dog's "accident" be met with kindness and understanding at that time? Or will you be so tremendously inconvenienced that you decide your dog can't live with you anymore?

I don't think people realize what a dog goes through when they are rehomed after years and years with their family. I can tell you that I have cried, many times, for a dog who sits at the window watching for their family and wondering what they've done wrong to make them lose their home. They do not understand. In their deepest time of need, they just want the same support that they've given their humans all these years.

Another misconception that people have, is that we can do anything differently than they are already doing in their power, to provide anything other than a dignified end when it's time. We get messages, "I have a 15 year old dog who is blind and deaf, he has trouble walking and isn't eating well, and can't control his bowels." There comes a time where people think there's something we can do, and time isn't anything I can battle and win. The kindest and most merciful thing anyone can do for their dog is consider their quality of life and be right by their side when you offer that final gift of mercy. It's very difficult to manage these situations where I feel confident a dog might need to meet Jesus instead of me.

More people need to stay committed to their senior pets, I really don't know how else to say it. Offloading the inconvenience of an old dog is not the answer. People just need to do better. Love your old dogs until the end. They need you.
