Glen Highland Welcome to Glen Highland! Visit this page often to keep up to date on current rescues and rescue alumni!

At Glen Highland Farm, people are given an opportunity to see dogs from a different perspective. In our conversations with adopters as well as on our website, we spend time sharing our philosophy that dogs are teachers, offering a way for us to experience simplicity, trust, freedom and life in the present moment. They open our hearts to a greater level of love, which in turn, changes our lives.

SANCTUARY RESIDENT PATCHES'S UPDATE:

Today in we went to attach this monitor to Patches’s body and measure more accurately a glucose level…
This will allow us to understand how her body handles insulin…this is the same tool used for humans.
Dogs often knock this off but no matter if we get 2 days, it’s more accurate than any other way to determine the needed information. In theory, it can hold data for 14 days.

We have increased her meal intake since she is loosing weight…3 pounds in two weeks is a lot, down from 36 to 33. The balancing act of diabetes and EPI is complex so we hope for solid data from the monitor.

She handled the vet experience beautifully.

ON WE GO....

GH ALUM UPDATE

Hi Lillie,

Thank you so much for the happy anniversary wishes for Lincoln!

Our handsome, smart, sensitive, lovable, sometimes mischievous boy with the sweetest personality will be 8 years old on February 16th!

He remains healthy, strong and active as usual. He continues to enjoy his favorite activities such as camping, swimming, play dates with his canine friends, hiking, playing in the snow and waiting for the mailman to drop off some treats.
He loves frisbees and balls of every size and shape. His absolute favorite is any toy that has a rope attached for a fun toss, retrieve and tug-of-war game! Especially if it’s a Kong Wubba toy.

He enjoys belly rubs, back scratches and taking naps. He’s always ready to jump in the car and run errands with us where he often scores a treat or two from the bank teller, the dump monitor or lumbar yard attendant.

He adores his fur-brother, Ziggy and watching the two of them hanging out together, playing and doing zoomies is beautiful to see.

He continues to sleep at the foot of our bed as he has done since day one. It’s hard to describe in words the love, joy and happiness he gives us every day. Hoping for many more years together.

We are so very grateful for all that you do and continue to do. Wishing you all the best in 2025.

With love and appreciation,
Cathy, Steve, Lincoln and Ziggy

PS-A Chewy gift card will be sent electronically in honor of Lincoln’s upcoming 8th birthday!

NEW GH SANCTUARY RESIDENT: PATCHES, age 8

Our newest addition to rescue in 2025 is clearly best served as a Sanctuary Resident. No matter how sweet and adorable she is which she TRULY is…Patches is a BIG medical challenge top to bottom - now and in the future. We will be devoting one Caretaker’s focus on her needs as we unravel the complex combination of unregulated diabetes with pancreatic enzyme disorder and bi-lateral cataracts caused from her failing metabolism. This is a very delicate, constantly evolving process of care.

We are optimistic that Patches will do well with constant diagnostic monitoring and specialists on her case.
However at her age, she IS a vulnerable dog because we are getting started so late in her life.

Sadly, this lovely Border Collie was really dealt a blow in the original home that neglected her. She slid down to 19 pounds and should have been a 45 pound girl…the root of her present problems stem from neglect long ago.

On Monday, Patches receives a glucose monitor attached to her body so we can finally have accurate measurements. Then we begin the long process of balancing her urine findings with her glucose levels and appropriate insulin amounts. Once she is stable, only then can we tackle her blindness which is progressing.

Everyone at Glen Highland and Animal Care of Gloucester is crazy in love with this great girl and we so appreciate the donations that support her needs.

We so hope she has many years ahead…Patches has an incredible joy for life even as sick as she is- she is amazing!

GH ALUM UPDATE:

Hi Lillie,
Here is Arlo asking for a treat at Agway. He is a truly wonderful guy and has adapted to living in town beautifully. He sniffs is way through walks, gathering all sorts of information, greets people and other dogs with enthusiasm, especially local merchants who
offer treats.

Thank you Lillie, we love him.

GH ALUM UPDATE:

Hi Lillie
I adopted Puck 12 years ago. He was one of those cute speckled puppies from the Amish/Cattledog/BC crosses.

He’s my heart. He is a special guy and we’re very attached.
He’s gone on to be one of my best puppy raisers. Friends often use him to help raise their pups. He’s appropriate and fair and often remains besties with every puppy he raises.

In his retirement years I bought him a farm. He keeps all his ducks in a row literally!

I hope he’s around for many more years
Thank you for entrusting me with my speckled boy

GLEN HIGHLAND SENIOR -- BUDDY
HEADING HOME TO MAINE!!

BUDDY had one more long car ride this time to his forever home…Boothbay Harbor Maine…a long way from Arkansas!
Former GH adopters met one of our PA adopters who kindly drove him from PA near to the NY border and then off he went... quite a slog of miles for this good-natured fella. We’ll see some great pictures once he settles in once and for all where he can be adored. We are so happy for Buddy and know he will enjoy a life with lots of great walks on his property and nearby conservation trails!

Special thanks to Erica Snyder who spent her sunday driving to make the trip a lot shorter for the adopters!
And kudos to our adopters who kindly opened their hearts and home to a Senior!!

We adopted Layla February 2017. She is doing wonderful and still Perfect !

Bob and I moved from our farm in NH this past Fall. Like your senior pups we needed some warmer weather as seniors ourselves.

Layla loves the hiking trails and her very own Frisbee field. I miss getting your updates and news.

KUMBA FOUND HIS HOME!

We are so excited for Kumba to have found the perfect life just for him…another active, fun-loving herding pal and two FurMoms who are devoted 24/7 to their canine family. He’ll have 10 acres for long walks and exploration, just perfect for him.

Kumba didn’t quite fit the normal Border Collie look but we knew someone would find him and fall in love, just like we had bringing him him into rescue.

It turns one of his new FurMoms literally burst into tears soon as she saw his pictures and knew he was meant to join their lives. We know from years of experience that when that magic moment happens, it’s destiny at play! This is exactly what was meant to be…At age 10, Kumba and his people found each other so his new journey could begin!

We had some fun witnessing the blast that he and his new pal, Zoe, had together and captured such great moments from wonderful videos that THIS became his adoption story!

This spectacular Border Collie mix didn’t take long to step into a loving new life!
We are so happy to have been the bridge to this bit of kismet! Kumba hopped into the car and never looked back!!!

HELP ARRIVES IN THE FORM OF A BORDER COLLIE...OF COURSE...A GH ALUM STORY...

Lewis came to us at 10.5 years. Obviously having been terribly neglected before Lillie took him in. Minna had recently lost her best friend who she had been with for over 10 years. Both GH alums.

Minna had become quiet and a bit sad after losing Pace, than Doug had a massive stroke 6 months after Lewis came. Friends and family said, “ how will you manage with 2 dogs too.”

Well we not only managed but thrived thanks to “ the 2 dogs”. The love from them, how they both would go over to Doug when his ataxia would kick in and put their heads in his lap, and the anxiety he was feeling would go.

When I had a hard day they were by my side. When we take our daily walks Lewis is right by my side, Minna is back to racing around and hunting through the woods, Lewis keeping a watchful eye on her.

Doug is making huge progress, I am back to my weaving and except for the constant PT we are back to normal again.

It would never have happened without the dogs. They made us laugh, they cuddled when we needed it, they are both so beautiful.

Thank you again for sending them to us, it has changed our lives forever.

Happy new year, best to you all

Dale, Doug, Minna and Lewis.

GH ALUM LUCIE
RETURNING TO RESCUE

solo dog
fenced yard
cats tba

At age 9, Lucie found her way back to us after the adopter's health took a downturn, leaving her unable to care for neither Lucie nor GH alum, Wren. Lucie is able to find a new home whereas Wren is best at age 12, as a Resident. Both were beloved family members and sweet, loving Border Collies through all these years.

In 2016, Lucie was only a year old when she came to Glen Highland with some shyness, worries about strangers and lots of BC energy too much for living in an apartment. Once adopted, over time, much has changed. She has gained confidence in the world and is a very friendly girl. She has matured well and enjoys being a companion, side by side with her person and very affectionate. She loves toys and enjoys patrolling her property, being sure all is well outside!

Lucie is a classic Border Collie who looks to her person for direction, eager to bond and relate. She is very bright and agile just a bit overweight from the past two years being inactive when her person had mobility issues. She is 46 pounds and will trim up with more activity now.

While Lucie is a petite gal, she is the boss when it comes to dogs and has been that way since she was young. We’ll only place her as a solo dog and she does need a fenced yard. We will cat test her shortly and update her bio.

Special thanks to Vicki Buono, Aiyana Persinger & Tim Mills who made the transport to Virginia possible.

ACE IS HOME!

On Saturday, the 18th of January, we gave ACE a lift to Connecticut to join the lives of former GH adopters! They spotted his pictures on the site and felt they could provide him a loving life. Being somewhat similar to their GH alum, Zxena, they were ready to bring another rescue into their hearts and home. They understood how a softer, shy, undersocialized Border Collie would need plenty of time to blossom without pressure.

We were sooooo excited for Ace where he could now live with very patient, very kind and very soulful people so he could relax and learn to trust everything around him. Ace did so well with his training time at Glen Highland but still needed just the right spot to flourish…now he’s got it!

YAY Ace!!! He hopped up on the couch confidently and played with toys SOON as he landed…more comfortable than we’d seen him in weeks…he voted very quickly…this is HOME!!!

GLEN HIGHLAND RESIDENT:

WREN returning to rescue...

At age 12, WREN found her way back to Glen Highland where she started in 2014 as part of a confiscation in NY. Known as the ‘Sprakers dogs’, she was one of 46 finding safe refuge in rescue.
The first year of her life was nothing any human would want to see a dog endure. The situation was tragic but thankfully she got out young. She was only a year old.

She was fostered in a loving home all these years with a ‘friend of the farm’ who adopted her. Her Fur-Mom adored her and expected little but a good companion so this semi-feral girl could just be herself and blossom, finally cared for properly. She became normal as can be in her little world!

An unexpected illness and injury meant Wren needed a safe refuge again and of course, like with all our Glen Highland adoptees, we brought her from NY to Virginia.

Wren is bravely checking out everything around her with lots of curiosity, clearly not the same shut down, terrified dog of years ago. It’s wonderful to see her so confident and see how quickly she is bonding to our Caretaker. A petite, pretty girl, we’re happy to carry on for her remaining years making them as joyous as possible. She loves other dogs and is meeting the Resident gang!

She came back to us with another Glen Highland alum, LUCIE who at age 9, is adoptable. While they lived together all these years, Lucie really needs her own spot where she is the center of attention. At age 12, Wren is happy to be in a safe refuge with BC buddies.

REILLY NOW AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

Fenced yard
Confident canine friend REQUIRED
Cat test TBA

A 10 year old, Reilly is not a sedate fella at all - he is FULL of energy - much like a 6 year old! The ball is his favorite go-to game but it’s not always retrieving, it’s more a keep-away-chase-me game even while other dogs are retrieving the ball. Think of him as the outfielder circling the action…happy as can be. Their ball retrieval game is his fun.

Reilly is a very joyful, athletic guy who would go anywhere you go and enjoy all of it! He sticks nearby exploring outside, always checking in and hops in car for any trip you want to take..he is very people-centric.
Reilly is also a VERY affectionate Border Collie, loving to cuddle in your lap and happily be by your side.

He is very good with other dogs and needs a confident canine mentor dog. He’s followed the lead of 14 year old Daphne and it’s helped him with his own confidence, now comfortable following her to explore the yard and be outside alone.

This sweet guy has a history of separation anxiety extremely worried when his person left so the other Border Collie "lead dog" stabilizes him. His anxiety stems from covid where he and his former person were together 24/7 for two years when she became ill. It was an extreme shock to him when she recovered and started leaving the house leading to behaviors she could not handle.

The best thing for him was coming to Glen Highland to rebalance. What’s working to bring the best of Reilly front and center is the confidence of another Border Collie, even two is fine for him cause he loves dogs.

He will ONLY be adopted into a home with a confident Border Collie or two.

He is also on prozac which allowed his panic to lessen so he could experience the world calmly. He could be weaned off the medication at some point since he now trusts his world makes sense.

The dog who arrived to us in late August is 100% different from the guy we see now. He has some obsessive tendencies to non-stop splash in water and a fear of thunder and gunshots but those are typical traits of the breed. His separation anxiety is no longer a major factor in his life and was clearly created situationally from the Covid time frame.

Reilly is about 45 pounds, not yet tested on cats and came to us from North Carolina.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO GLEN HIGHLAND ALUM CHLOE who is turning 17!!!!!

The love of our life will be 17 years old on the 31st of this month. Please find attached a recent picture of the "old gal" . Her hearing is gone and the cataracts make her seeing difficult but she still loves her walks no matter the weather. I only wish that we had her long life secrets. All the best to you and your house mates.

REAL PURPOSE...right dog with the right person at the right time

I hear from adopters when their GH alum passes or something significant marks their relationship…and one thing I’ve learned after over 3,000 adoptions...

Glen Highland rescue dogs always have a purpose…maybe disguised with sports, cute tricks to make people laugh, or sailing the waters side by side…no matter what... they are deeply connected to the person they love...

one of our adopters wanted to share her story....

Lillie,

Chase update:

It is with great sadness that I tell you Kobi has passed over the Rainbow Bridge. Kobi was surrounded by myself, Andy and our three adult children.

Thank you for placing two amazing dogs with our family. We brought Chase into our pack May 2018. Chase was very young, less than one year old. I already had Kobi a Glen Highland alumni and Jade an Aussie Rescue alumni.

I remember when I came to look at Chase, you told me, “I want you to have him before somebody messes him up.” You were right! First of all, we have to watch for Border Collie Obsessive Compulsive behavior. I have to keep the door to the home office shut when I am not in the room or Chase will spend hours watching the birdfeeder.

Chase had very good manners from the start and he is excellent with basic obedience in the house. Our property abuts conservation land and I walk him off leash with no issues.

Chase was meant to be in our family not only for Chase’s sake but for ours. Chase now has a special job. In July of 2023, I was diagnosed with uterine cancer. I underwent surgery and chemo treatments. During this time, I really needed a dog to cuddle with and Chase did just that. I have never had a dog as cuddly as Chase. Chase helped me through the days when I sat on the couch and watched documentaries on NetFlix. My last treatment was 2/2/2024.

The next day I took a walk with the dogs. After that day I made a goal of walking at least a mile on the trails every day. Chase and Kobi were faithful escorts even when I was really slow. The daily walk benefited us all. Kobi had less night time confusion, Chase was a little calmer and I regained my strength. Chase and Kobi did an excellent job helping me recover.

Chase took on another job. As Kobi declined, Chase watched over him. Chase kept a close eye on Kobi on the trails. At times I would let Kobi outside and he would seem to forget why he was out. All I had to do was call Chase and he would come and lead Kobi off the deck into the yard.

Thank you so much for letting us have Chase. He had a job to do for our family and you knew that. I will send picture of Chase and Kobi (back left).

Cindy
