Welcome to Glen Highland! Visit this page often to keep up to date on current rescues and rescue alumni!
At Glen Highland Farm, people are given an opportunity to see dogs from a different perspective. In our conversations with adopters as well as on our website, we spend time sharing our philosophy that dogs are teachers, offering a way for us to experience simplicity, trust, freedom and life in the present moment. They open our hearts to a greater level of love, which in turn, changes our lives.

NEW DOG RUBY, AGE 12
- Available
- Canine friends or solo dog
- Not tested on cats
A 12 year old Border Collie, RUBY is a love-bug and such a charmer. She wants to say hello to everyone, wiggling and wagging and doing her little hello dance…such a joyful girl. She is very easy going, happy to hang around with her person or go for a walk to explore the yard or even a car ride just for fun. Ruby is playful and full of life!
She is very good with other dogs and enjoys their company, happy to hang out or investigate the yard together. But, her main focus is a person…a person who is ‘hers’ so she would certainly love being a companion.
Ruby had an unusual life living with a homeless man in North Carolina. While we would all feel this is less than ideal, one thing is clear..she was a cherished friend. Often we actually have found that dogs living on the street with a person are THE one thing that is loved fully since life has generally disintegrated. Once Ruby’s person went into a shelter, she had nowhere to go herself until Glen Highland. She needs to lose some weight and enjoy better nutrition but is surely the happiest gal here!!!
And, yes Ruby LOVES the couch!!!
Special thanks to transporters Teresa Allred and Cherie Grell for getting Ruby to safety at Glen Highland. And, a special big thanks to Laura Powell for lodging Ruby til the transport could happen.

NEW DOG REILLY, AGE 10
Just arrived to Glen Highland from North Carolina, Not yet available
A 10 year old Border Collie ball nut, REILLY is a playful guy ready to go for any toss or take a fast run for any frisbee. He is focused, agile and eager to interact with his person! Reilly is also super friendly and sweet, loving belly rubs and cuddle time. He has a good off-switch though is by no means a sedate Senior.
Reilly also loves other dogs, especially enjoying his new BC pals at Glen Highland. He fit in with five dogs easily and is excited to meet anyone new. He previously lived with a Maltese. In his new life, we really want him to have a canine pal, even more than one is good. We do not know about cats.
On the health side, Reilly is in great shape. All his diagnostics were terrific. However, his emotional state needs a bit of help so he can re-balance and have less anxiety about being left alone. In his previous home, in North Carolina, he was with his person 24/7 and did not adjust well to her returning to work so he landed in rescue.
It will take some months for Reilly to adapt to this totally different life of BC pals, someone coming and going and lots of hikes and property walks…all designed to provide stimulation and variety. A more enriching lifestyle should help him blossom into a more secure Border Collie.
Special thanks to volunteers who transported Reilly to us: Karen Noblett & Aiyana Persinger.

Even as I write this, I’m sure my email box is filling with yet more dogs in trouble. It will never end. The problem is not the Border Collies themselves, it is how human life works: Deaths, sickness, unemployment, foreclosures, lost homes…the list is life itself.
If you care about Border Collies, especially Seniors, please support our efforts or share the mission with others who might want to do so. The funds we need will handle veterinary care for dogs here NOW and those coming NEXT.
Help us continue to care for the NEXT senior in need! TO DONATE: https://glenhighlandfarm.com/donation.htm

A SHORT STAY FOR SKY...
Our hearts hurt loosing our little friend, SKY, only with us for 7 months arriving right before the holidays in 2023.
This first picture of SKY, even out of focus gave us a feeling of wanting to help. But, not only was she adorable, she was so immune compromised that no other rescue said ‘yes’ even though she was only 11. We stepped up and are so glad we did.
Bladder cancer ultimately took her life yesterday but we had the great honor of watching this spitfire carry on living her best life through all the changes, no matter what. First, she loved all the new attention coming her way and eagerly demanded more. Then, she clearly told the other rescue dogs they were not her cup of tea, whatsoever! So, our little ‘princesss’ got the best seat in the house as the 24/7 companion to our Senior Caretaker in her office. Being an office rescue dog means TONS of attention a lot of the time!
Still feeling like SKY could have more to make her happier, we arranged an adoption. The Glen Highland team was so excited she would now have it ‘all’…a real focus just on her all the time.
But her destiny was different.
Days before she was due to go, the bladder cancer was her new reality.
So, we all took a deep breath and made these last two months one big party! Time for special walks, Chic-fili nuggets and lots of visits from the team who of course, told Miss Sky that she was by far, the ONLY gorgeous girl on the planet!
We will miss you Skylar aka SKY…your high-energy excitement was contagious to be around…and made us all chuckle.
Thanks for sharing that great spirit of fun and curiosity with us all. Gone way too soon but having fun til the very last moments.

GOODBYE TO KODY
Sadly, we said goodbye to KODY today, the 25th of July, six months after his arrival earlier this year. A complete sweetheart, this gentle soul was in such rough shape on arrival, we had no sense of how much time was ahead. Even our vet was worried it would be a very short stay.
Albeit shorter than we would have liked, Kody made the most of his new journey and renewed himself with as much vigor as he could muster. A good nap…a good trot outside…back in for another nap…some loving belly rubs...another nap…always with a happy look that life was indeed ‘a-okay!’
Kody gained the strength he needed to peacefully leave us with the calmness and wisdom of an ‘old soul’ who had arrived exactly where he was supposed to be and then onto exactly where he was supposed to go. When we meet these special Border Collies, we are left in awe. They return to spirit with grace and dignity, thanks to a little help
Thank you KODY for sharing the special energy that WAS and IS still YOU. All of us are lucky to have met you whether it’s through pictures or in person…GODSPEED

NEW DOG PIPPA, AGE 9
Just arrived from Oklahoma, not available
PIPPA, age 9
Found as a stray, Pippa landed in an overcrowded Oklahoma shelter due to be euthanized after a month of no interest, due to her age. Thankfully, a local dog lover tirelessly reaches out for dogs with a death sentence and connected to BCSave in Texas who wrote us. We have worked together numerous times to help Seniors since landing in Virginia.
Marked for rescue, she was spared that sad fate and in 48 hours, was safe at a vet office for boarding and full vetting. A few days later she was moved to BCSave’s team for overnighting prior to a long 35 hour transport to Glen Highland. On arrival, she literally laid down and didn’t awake for many, many hours, just exhausted.
Estimated to be 9 years old, Pippa has been a champ throughout all this chaos, sweetly licking kind hands offering affection. She walks on leash when asked; sits by your side when you sit, just the kindness nature, clearly someone’s dog at some point.
She is remarkable and resilient and so loving.
Sadly, PIPPA has heartworm disease so we will navigate what’s right as we strengthen her health and let her rest, finally enjoying being back in a home.
CLEARLY SHE LOVES THE NEW SETTING AT GLEN HIGHLAND AND FIT RIGHT IN!
A HUGE thanks to Amanda Mayo who devotes her time to reaching out to rescues when there is no time left. And, as always, our appreciation to BCSave and Adam Derby who transported Pippa. We are grateful to help this lovely girl.

NEW DOG PRINCESS, age 10
Just arrived from Maine
PRINCESS, age 10
A classic herding oriented Border Collie, Princess (PRIN) found herself in need of a new home when the person she lived with since a pup had to move into assisted living due to dementia. Sadly, only one of the two BC’s could go so this lovely girl came to us at Glen Highland. We are grateful our rescue colleagues, New England Border Collie Rescue, reached out to us to help her.
Family members kindly made sure that Prin would not land in a shelter, instead in rescue where she would be loved and cared for properly, and hopefully adopted into a new life. We are very happy to see what she wants as she experiences a whole new situation.
Prin is going into our GH foster home in Vermont since she needs supervision with other dogs as she learns to live with more than one dog. Her former canine pal was the toy dog and she was the herder so we'll find out if she herself, might enjoy toy play and just ‘being’ with other Border Collies, not ‘working’ them!
Prin is people focused with a friendly, good-natured personality, clearly a beloved family member. She is a healthy girl and now knocking off some weight, already loosing 18 pounds off her 80 pound size (these pictures) thanks to the family member caring for her. She was previously free-fed and more sedate in recent years.
We’ll update her bio and have newer pictures soon!! Prin is not good with cats and needs a fenced yard.
Special thanks to Ann Cattaneo & her two-legged & four-legged family (5 GH alums) for fostering Prin.

FROM LOUISIANA TO NEW YORK SAFE & SOUND
Every now and then a young BC pops up and needs a boost to a new home which we are happy to give! This lovely blonde & white BC named GRIN, for obvious reasons, was stuck in a Louisiana shelter as a stray. He was estimated age 2 - 3, marked as a mix and had passed his temperament evaluations beautifully . What’s not well known is that this coloration BC is common in Louisiana as well as Texas bred for this unique color. So, soon as we received the email, we knew he was a purebred but still needed someone open-minded to consider him since he is so atypical.
One of former adopters was eagerly hoping to add a 2nd dog once their GH alums passed so all it took was an email and they said yes! Absolutely yes…they had a uniquely marked BC before and instantly loved Grin. So after two days of travel, he’s now in their car heading to NY about to get tons of love and even some snow under his paws this winter!
We hope he will " GRIN and bear it” - couldn’t resist!
YAY for Grin who will never be wandering on any street again! Big thanks to Melanie Manning, a dog lover who works tirelessly to help dogs in shelters find their way to safety. She organized EVERYTHING to make this happen. And a big thank you to Wet Nose Riders, a transport service created by dog lovers to insure more lives are saved. Glen Highland was pleased to finance Grin’s needs and land a great life for

** NEW RESIDENT OREO **
At age 12, OREO became unexpectedly homeless when his person died suddenly... A lifetime of love evolved into confusion with the move to Rescue, but Oreo’s gentle nature shone through as he craved a human connection.
His immediate health needs were obvious with a mass the size of a cantaloupe. Unfortunately, it is a malignant mast cell tumor - a challenging cancer. Known for ‘exploding’ when ‘bothered’, even the aspirate used to confirm the cancer type was risky. The mass began a year ago, only the size of a quarter.
Thankfully, his chest x-rays are clear so the cancer has not yet moved to his lungs. Obviously Oreo is going to have a very shortened lifespan, likely only months. This type of cancer is generally not painful, but he can have a very aggressive downturn at any time.
For now, the Glen Highland team has made Oreo super comfortable with his very own UNI-BRA! A single bra (EE) cup contraption was created to hold the huge dangling and irritating mass out of the way. Oreo is really enjoying the freedom of normal movement! A STAFF t-shirt adds a little extra support over his shoulders. Of course he loves being on duty!
As long as OREO needs us, we will be here for him.

GH ALUM UPDATE:
Hi Lillie,
It’s hard to believe we’ve had Spencer for 9 years already. His birthday is coming up this Sunday, 10 years old. My daughter says he and I will be the same age now ( I turned 70 in June and he’s turning 70 in dog years).
He’s in good shape, takes multiple daily walks and keeps all of us safe from squirrels 🐿️. Along with his two cats and his tortoise, his numerous dog friends, he seems a very contented dog, we should all have such happy lives.
Hope all is well with you and your team at the farm and, of course, all the pups.

GH ALUM HELLO!
We are at the FDR National Historic Site and came upon the statue of FDR and Eleanor sitting at a garden table. Annie walked up to them, sniffing FDR first and bumping his arm then went over to Eleanor.
As you can see, Eleanor’s hand is raised and open. Annie bumped her arm, saw the open hand, then jumped up for a pat. Annie has good taste in women.
Thought this would bring a chuckle.

GH ALUM UPDATE:
Hi Lillie! Thanks so much for the anniversary message for Ben! It's hard to believe we've had him for 9 years now.
Ben continues to be, well...Ben. He's not slowing down at all even though we guess he's around 11ish or so at this point. He still runs in agility, last year placing 10th among the All American Dogs and 12th overall in his class. He still runs in CPE agility and this year, getting his first level 2 title.
And this year he found a new love: FastCAT! We took him to a trial with his sister and entered him for fun and it turned out he loves it.
Of course, he also loves racing through the woods and running around the yard with his little sister, Lea and generally just being the best boy ever. He still makes us laugh every day, still loves taking all his squeaky toys outside. In a lot of ways he hasn't changed at all over the years and we're thankful for that! Every day with Ben is a joy!
I've attached some photos from the year. The FastCAT photo was taken by Charlotte With Dogs. The rest are mine!

GH ALUM UPDATE:
Hi Lillie, just a quick note to say hello and to thank you once again for our 12 challenging but incredibly wonderful years with “Happy”, who celebrated his 14th birthday yesterday.
He’s slowed down considerably in the past year, actually turning down all offers of frisbee & ball and much preferring an ambling, “sniffy” walk through the woods...which thankfully we all love. He became 100% deaf a year ago but we’ve all managed that “passage” pretty easily.
He has lots of lumps and bumps forming but our very attentive & loving Vet says not to worry…yet!
We think of you so very, very often and hope to stop in to say hi during one of our treks to & from Key West between Jan-April. It would be really heartwarming to see you again and to visit your “new” (to us!) location.
Til then, thanks for any advice about food that you can send to me at your convenience, and endless thanks for ALL you do.
Love & hugs, Peter, Heidi and “Happy”
, Boothbay, ME

GH ALUM UPDATE:
Hi Lillie!
Jax is 10 years old and has become our beloved “Best Boy.” He has mellowed and become a real gentleman with people - politely asking for pets to his fur that is somehow fluffy AND shiny. Everyone remarks what a good dog he is and wants to take him home.
He is always by my side, but when I’m away he keeps my husband and sons company.
The original dogs in the household, Pippa the chihuahua mix and Diesel the Boxer, are both gone in the past few years, but Jax is already raising the next generation of Boxer buddies - 2.5 year old Maggie has grown up with him as role model and wrestling partner. He lets her think she is bossing him around :) Here he is at his cutest, and also teaching his sister to act like a hooligan.
Best wishes,
Christina

GLEN HIGHLAND RESIDENT UPDATE: FOR ALL THE TUCKER FANS… AND ANGELS WHO SUPPORT HIM… Since arrival at Glen Highland 5/22, Tucker has had obvious joint issues from a traumatic injury leaving him with a plate in his front leg and other backend weaknesses. Over time, it’s became obvious that his left back leg was worsening as he continually went lame after short bits of ball play. Pain medication was not helping so it was time to investigate with xrays. We had hoped to do this before but his heartworm disease prevented the risk of sedation. Now, after a year of the slow-kill method, it was safe enough to proceed. After his visit to Dr Paul Bookbinder, our orthopedic surgeon from NY (yes Tucker went from Va to Ny), turns out that our ball-playing fiend has four busted legs with degenerative joint disease and bilateral hip dysplasia adding to the pain. BUT, the new finding came from Paul’s ability to palpate his body to find the real pain behind the back leg issue…sciatica…he has debilitating lower back pain much like we as humans experience with sciatica. As Paul moved his tail to the left, he dropped to the ground. The video shows how he assesses the source of pain..yes it is hard to watch Tucker react but interesting to understand. So many of us have Border Collies who run like the wind chasing balls and are so stoic and will endure pain without you even knowing it…only later in life, is the real source clear. (contact Lillie if the video does not come through to you) Tucker had previously been seen by two surgeons in Virginia and neither were able to find the source of the issue until Dr Bookbinder…which is why we traveled a LONG way to see him. Undergoing hip surgery will not solve this type of pain yet the other surgeons were willing to operate on his hips assuming that would fix the lame back leg. Back surgery would not likely be appropriate either based on the degenerative state of his joints. Orthopedic issues are not just diagnosed wit
In case you've missed this...here is a wonderful start to a new week...orderly Border Collies being their brilliant selves...
A BIG SMILE FROM GLEN HIGHLAND'S RESIDENT MAX TO US ALL...cancer be damned! This is THE best morning event to see unfold….MAX has the courage for playing now…he’s found a friend in one of the rescues who just thinks he is so cool! You can see Max is a VERY able-bodied tall Senior Border Collie. He only had little dogs in his prior situation so this is such a big win for him to find new happiness! We’ll take all this joy for Max any day!
MAX IS SETTLED FOR HIS FIRST NIGHT... pretty tired but also pretty playful! we'll update more after the holidays...he knows, sit, lie down, comes instantly when called...someone clearly invested time in him...he also has a cute happy dance where he taps his foot when excited and makes a woo-woo sound too! Tug is his fav game!
UPDATE: MAX will be coming to Glen Highland Thursday 12/22... we are all set!!!! LOOKING FOR HELP MOVING A SENIOR FROM NJ SOUTH TOWARD VA...TO GLEN HIGHLAND SANCTUARY & RESCUE We want to help a 12 year old Border Collie now in animal control due to nipping a 1 yr old in the home...though the senior dog lived there since a pup, he lost his home as often happens with grandkids. IF ANYONE IS TRAVELING FROM EDISON OR PATERSON NJ HEADING SOUTH FOR THE HOLIDAYS...PLEASE CONTACT LILLIE...[email protected] WE WOULD LOVE TO GET HIM OUT OF THERE!
Glen Highland Resident Della, with osteosarcoma recently diagnosed... Still awaiting the oncology consult but have concluded no surgery…the upper jaw option is rife with complications and with heartworm untreated for so many years, it’s just not fair for her to endure what would likely be a massively difficult recovery.. so…as promised…we ‘PARTY ON’….Della loves her own ball play which works well considering she knows how much her mouth hurts and needs to stop…she is on heavy pain meds now...but having fun Such a doll!!!
GOOD TEARS FOR THIS ONE... omg this is so sweet…a little pup long ago came to us and landed with a lovely 12 year old whose Mom convinced me was a serious dog kid and boy she was and is…many dogs later, she is training and gaining titles right and left but listen to the speaker read what she wrote about Rush…now 12… she did get another BC from GLEN HIGHLAND not long ago and is running him in sports too! THIS is why rescue will always matter, no matter when or what age…great dogs need another chance
** UPDATE ON DELLA 11/20/22 ** DELLA reminded us of the truth of how dogs experience life…right in the NOW, not the past, not the future... but the NOW. READ DELLA'S STORY: https://glenhighlandfarm.com/to-spirit/to-spirit-della.htm A TEARY TURN OF EVENTS... 10/10/22: Well…seems we are having a cancer ‘run’, leaving us without options for dogs we surely would love to help and spend more time with…Casey had only four days; Monty had 3 weeks; NOW DELLA will likely have 5 months and if lucky, maybe a year…but very hard to predict… A dental issue appeared as a simple tooth abscess and within a week was an angry oral mass, leaving us and our vet shaking our heads, bracing for bad news. And, bad news we did get… Della has osteosarcoma in her upper jaw which is very hard to surgically manage with good results. We are in discussion with an oncology specialist to consider any and all options. Realistically, Della already had a malignant mammary mass removed and has had heartworm disease untreated for years so while her chest radiographs seem ‘fine’…it’s truly a gamble if we can buy more quality time for her. Her body clearly has illness within. Of course, as you tear up knowing what’s ahead, it’s so important to remember one fact… DOGS DO NOT LIVE IN THE FUTURE…SHE HAS ABSOLUTELY NO FOCUS ON HER MEDICAL PROBLEMS…TOMORROW IS NOT ON HER MIND WHATSOEVER instead…it’s a great meal, a wonderful run in the woods, hanging with her BFF Tucker and getting some love from those she meets… DOGS LIVE IN THE NOW…THANKFULLY SO SHE IS STILL A HAPPY GIRL… As their humans, we get stuck sadly roaming through what’s ahead…so we have to get out of the way, so to speak, cry in the closet when we have to and forge on to have the grandest party of life today and for whatever time we have…no pity, no sadness, no staring, no sobbing…just moving along with the joy of living TODAY and each day she awakes… It’s no easier for us than any of
GH alum update: Hi Lillie and Team, Hamish is well into his 16th year and doing pretty good. We continue our daily walks on the trails at Thacher state park and occasionally hit the newish ‘rail trail’ when I want an easier walk. Since he’s lived here Hamish has never been much for play. He used to show a little interest in chasing squeaky tennis balls, but only for a couple of tosses. Then he’d take the ball to one of his spots, lay down, and peel the fuzzy cover off it and pull out the squeaker. He enjoyed going after chipmunks and rabbits, but now he’s happy to just watch them. In the morning he still tells any deer passing by that he’s got his eye on them. These days he spends quite a lot of his time snoozing and I guess that’s OK. As for pictures, he’s very camera shy. I have tried but when he sees the camera he turns tail so all I get are pictures of his rear end. Here is a pretty good movie of him being coy!
GH ALUM UPDATE: Lizzie at 16...With her younger "brother" Will. She taught him all his manners. He's a perfect gentleman. Gigi
GH ALUM UPDATE: This is how Jake likes to celebrate his 16th birthday! Thanks for a great border collie! Glen Highlands Jakie Boy. Alan and Rosemary
